People throwing food in the halls and shrieking like demented baboons.

I often wonder how some people can so fervently deny our place as animals.

It is very important to the human psyche to feel that we're more important than cats, dogs, beetles, viruses, or even rocks and mud.  It isn't true, but it's important.

For me it's an uncanny valley situation. They feel less alive to me because they repeat a few ambient lines ad nauseam, NPCs in town often having repetitive conversations or making the same remarks to you every time you pass by. A robot like Spot (or any of the Big Dog-inspired robots) might be cute because it stumbles like a real animal yet isn't, but this dude's ScarJo bot is deeply unpleasant despite having more of the superficial characteristics of a living thing.

The robot is endearing enough it actually seems sadistic to kick it.

The humanoid robot is creepy mostly in context because I'm pretty sure that weirdo made that bot just so he could fuck it.

In other "interesting times" type news---

http://www.latimes.com/politics/la-na-pol-travel-ban-legal-analysis-20170206-story.html

Looks like the Supreme Court might have to decide on exactly what limits on presidential power there are, and how and when to apply them.

If they seriously curtail the president's powers, and return that power back to congress where it belongs, I will be a very happy man. Executive over-reach has been a SERIOUS problem for the past few decades.

Sad it took a raging IDIOT to force people to see it though.

What's more likely is a nearly random decision from the Ninth Circuit, based on which judges are drawn, and then a 4-4 Supreme Court decision which would only result in the lower court decision being upheld with no useful precedent.

Can you post a single thing, anything?

What the heck sort of source would be acceptable for this? Prince Harry approval ratings?

Not to defend worthless parasite royals, but didn't you say literally nobody liked Prince Harry?

How about a poll where literally nobody liked that guy?

Also this gets considerably easier to prove if every child gets free lunches.

I am unaware of what catastrophe would befall the country if every single child in America got a free lunch every day.  Other than the bizarre ancap type argument that taxing anyone even a penny is the worst thing that can ever possibly happen and condemns the entire society to doom.  Which is so obviously idiotic it barely merits notice.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Long-term resident scholar not doing anything
« on: February 07, 2017, 03:50:57 am »
I have this Raven Man scholar who's been a resident for at least 6 months. He has been here before, in fact, as a regular visitor, and left as usual, to come back months later and apply for long-term residence. The first time around he was completely functional as a scholar, discussing many subjects in the library. Now all he's doing is being interested after watching performances.

Is this a bug, I wonder?  Or is it realism, the way an actual visiting scholar would behave if given free booze and food for doing nothing?

Yup, there does seem to be some opportunistic definitions of fairness going around.

e.g. if the rich also eat the school lunch, then isn't that itself more fair than not letting them eat it, since they did pay taxes? Certainly if taxing the rich was unfair in the first place, then letting them have some of the food paid for with said taxes can't also be unfair. Letting everyone eat, regardless of wealth is fairer, no matter what. And it avoids the stigma of poverty, and avoiding the stigma of poverty eliminates one more barrier to social mobility.

The rich should obviously be able to take advantage of the benefits from taxes they pay, especially in a progressive tax system with brackets, and shouldn't be limited to that, i.e. they should be able to opt out of the school lunch, and everything about the school, by buying their own alternative service.

There are obvious exceptions where some particular service, like food stamps, is specifically to alleviate the suffering of the poor, but school lunches wouldn't be that.  Every kid who went to public school when I was a kid could eat those, even if they were rich.  The purpose of school lunches is pedagogical.  It's to ensure every child is well nourished enough to be educated.  You can't learn much on an empty stomach.

Although in my current fort it's like "Do I have steel battle axes for everyone?"
As long as you *never* allow steel battle axes in bins, you can just set a condition for "at most 2 steel battle axes".  Any battle axe that someone holds is "unavailable.  As soon as people start grabbing battle axes, you will start making them.

The "conditions" you can add to a given order is what I especially like.  So you can have a neverending order to build beds, but limit it to when you have no more than 20 beds, and no less than 100 wood, so you don't end up with a Sorcerer's Apprentice task that eats up all your resources, as it will if you have such an order repeating in some forgotten workshop.

I have flows for these so that I can, for instance, have 10 beds, 20 tables, 20 chairs, 20 chests, 10 armor stands, 10 weapons racks, and 10 coffins out of some cheap material, and no more than that, automatically generated so when I decide to build some set of reasonably luxurious quarters, that stuff is available.  And then have 1 bed, 2 tables, 2 chairs, 2 chests, 1 armor stand, 1 weapon rack, and 1 coffin out of more expensive materials, and no more, so when I suddenly have to accommodate some noble, all this stuff is available.

It's also great when you can workflow something like the production of steel by checking for iron and flux, and making pig iron, then when you have enough of these, smelting steel.  And something else checking for when you have steel, and making things, like steel battle-axes, that are actually useful.

The problem is you have to be somewhat parsimonious in how many things you assign because it seems to kill FPS when you really cram the queue with all kinds of stuff constantly.

I've had a kobold be the guy representing a human civilization before.  Kobolds hadn't actually taken over the civilization, though.

Could you communicate with it, or does [UTTERANCES] still apply to kobold diplomats?

I'm not sure.  He didn't actually do anything but hang around and eventually go away.

And yet you remain unbanned by the toad so, good job, keep it up.

I was disrupting /pol/

I remain on my best behavior here, though.  I will do my best never to anger the toad.

I got banned from 4chan.

Do you realize just how deplorable your conduct has to be before that happens?

Wow. Vera Lynn is bringing out a new album for her 100th birthday, and performing live in London on the 18th of March.
She already had a record for being the oldest person ever to be number 1 of the UK hitlist in 2009.

What can I say? Respect.

Anyone notice that Donald Trump is a lot like Barney the Dinosaur? In that if you use your imagination they both do amazing things... But in reality they are both stuffed?

Sorry bad joke :P

Also they both love you.  But one of them is a reptile without even a primitive limbic system and the other is a purple dinosaur.

659
Trump is fat.  Discuss.

I have it, on good authority, that he is, in fact, yuge, Sir. Yuge.

We literally have Baron Harkonnen as President.

I think if he were rude to her she'd gracefully and majestically clobber him into submission with the hard end of a crown jewel (while holding him by the ear like a naughty toddler).
