@Fleeting Frames: I totally forgot about plant gathering.  I can confirm that as I've done it before.  Thanks for the reminder!  (Plant gathering is a lot easier to control than fishing and hunting, so I like it better)

However, in my case there were not Forgotten Beasts or other known syndrome bearers. Just visitors and lots of booze.

Same here. Although I did notice one thing.  Each of the the dwarfs were either new immigrants or children that had just grown to 1 year old.  So I *think* it was the first time they had drunk in the fortress.  I noticed that some of my other immigrants had memories of being rescued as well...  So it might be related.

DF Gameplay Questions / All of my dwarfs are being rescued when they drink
« on: September 09, 2018, 07:31:27 am »
It's very strange.  Each time one of my dwarfs goes to take a drink, they are being "rescued" and brought to the hospital.  There is nothing showing up on the health screen and I do not have tavern poisoners employed.  It's resulting in a lot of good feelings of sympathy, but I'm a bit worried that the dwarfs are going to get thirsty.  The elves just left and I just got a couple of migrants, but I can't really fathom how I would have got weird syndrome.  Any ideas?  I'll just play and see if it stops... (or if dwarfs die)

Edit: Whatever it was seems to have righted itself.  Dwarfs are drinking from the same barrels and same mugs with no problems any more.  Really weird.  6 dwarfs in a row from different barrels in different parts of the fortress with different drinks.  Only one of the fruits came from the elves, but you bet I'm blaming them!

When dwarfs turn 1 year old, they jump out of their mother's arms and get a "pickup equipment" task.  Then they wander all over the fortress looking for clothes :-)

DF General Discussion / Re: Debian problems installing Dwarf fortress
« on: September 09, 2018, 01:28:31 am »
It appears that your libpng is bad and also that you have problems with your GNOME setup (which might be related to the libpng problem).  It's hard to debug from here, but it appears that you have problems unrelated to DF that is causing DF not to run.  Possibly reinstall gnome (or at least libpng).

Also make sure that you are using the lib32 compat libraries.  It's been a donkey's age since I used Debian, so I can't remember how it's all set up.  However, Debian went 64 bit a *long* time ago, so making sure you have all the 32bit stuff install properly is quite important for your machine.

The tavern is a meeting hall.  I believe it is the only meeting hall I have.  Interestingly, it is probably buggy because nobody idles with No Job there.  Not quite sure what's wrong.

So far I'm satisfying needs pretty well. All of my adult dwarfs except one are "somewhat satisfied".  My one dwarf who was "unfocused with unmet needs" was my expedition leader (I've capped myself at 35 dwarfs at the moment).  I have 2 dwarfs who have long term stress (one, seemingly because he dislikes family and he has 7 children LOL, the other who is in a constant state of rage after having been rained on when he immigrated :-P).  I've managed to keep their needs fulfilled, but they spend all of their time yelling at the expedition leader and so he never had time to meet any of his needs.  I replaced him as expedition leader to give him a break and I'm hoping he'll come around.

At least for me, I'm not sure I can play this game at the moment without capping the population -- just too many things to take care of in a single year and it's too easy to get overrun with dwarfs that will go crazy.

Sounds like intended behavior to me. I'm more expecting people to plot their own assassination.

I forget the actual term for this, but it kills lumberjacks fairly often.  Basically, when you chop down the tree, it can skip off the stump and hit you.  So imagine you are cutting it to your right.  It starts to fall over to the right, but at the last minute, it changes direction and the bottom of the tree (just above where you cut it) jumps up and hits you.  So when you are cutting the tree, what you are supposed to do is cut a notch on the side away from the direction that it will ultimately fall.  You stick a wedge in that notch.  That way, when you cut on the other side, it mechanically guides the tree in the right direction.  However, it doesn't always work and people still die cutting down trees.

I have family rooms.  The room contains 1 bed for the couple and one bed for each non-baby child.  I assign each bed, but the couple's bed I only assign one of the dwarfs (because the other is auto assigned).  It may or may not be relevant, but each couple is pumping out a baby *every* year!  More than half of my fort is children now.

What may be more relevant is that I've been experimenting with a more organic approach to  fortress design this time.  I've made a small central fortress.  This fortress contains only the basics: still, kitchen, military oriented stuff.  Around the fortress I've made hillocks: essentially a hatch cover over a stairway that goes down 1-3 levels to a dwarf's dwelling.  The idea is that dwarfs live in the hillocks and that in times of disaster, they evacuate to the fortress.

Each dwelling (both inside and outside the fortress) is 2 6x6 rooms, with an optional alcove that contains a shrine to the family's god.  The main room contains the beds, some tables (1 assigned to each adult dwarf and one extra unassigned table for the children) and chairs.  In the attached 6x6 room I have 2 workshops, for people to work.  The workshops have permissions set to allow only the resident dwarfs to use them.

The idea is to make is so that the dwarfs are near their homes as much as possible and don't have to roam all over the fortress all the time.  It works pretty well.  The only time the dwarfs are wandering around is when they go to the tavern (right in the middle of the first level of the fortress), when they are hauling stuff, when they are smoothing stone, etc.  Otherwise they are home bodies.  I get *frequent* good thoughts from talking to loved ones... and babies.  Too many babies :-)

DF General Discussion / Re: Toady’s Airconditioning

I can relate with not wanting to have AC.  I live in Japan and when I first moved here I asked an old woman what I should do to really understand Japanese culture.  She said that I should go through the summer without AC -- without even an electric fan.  Only use a hand fan.  And I should go through the winter without using heating (it doesn't usually freeze where I live :-) ).  "To be Japanese is to be intimately aware of the weather", she said.

You may think I'm crazy (well, those of you who have read my posts will have no doubt...), but I tried it that year.  I made it through the summer and I made it to March, before I broke in the winter.  Having done that, I understood what she was trying to say.  We isolate ourselves in our climate bubbles.  Without AC (or even electric fans), and without heat, what is the difference between inside and outside?  Why would I cower in my hovel (and it *was* a hovel -- I was paying the equivalent of $150 a month :-)), when I could be out and doing things?  Why would I waste my life being afraid of getting hot or cold or whatever?  I was *already* hot (or cold... or whatever).

And the seasons!  When I first came to Japan, people would ask me, "Do you have 4 seasons in your country" -- which seemed like an odd question.  Of course we have 4 seasons in Canada!  But... what is the difference between summer and winter?  Hockey on TV vs. CFL Football (yeah, I watched that...)?  I'd hide in my room, eating food grown in California -- always the same tasteless crap, picked 3 weeks ago in some field irrigated with water that would ordinarily go to Mexico, and picked by Mexicans who can't grow food in their own country any more.   Then flown to Canada to sit on a shelf for a week before I shove it down my neck with barely a second thought.

Now I know the names of every plant that grows around me (in Japanese, not English).  I watch the river go through its cycles of bust and boom.  I see the herons nest, have chicks, teach them how to fish and then eventually fly off.  I watch the seaweed wash up on the beach, and the old women go out to harvest it in the dead of winter.  I eat food that is grown by my neighbours (Like, I go to the supermarket and their face is on the freaking bag).  I see them harvest the food, pack it up, drive it to the distribution centre and then I see it in the supermarket 1 day later.   I know what it means when they say that an autumn eggplant is too good for a bride.  And I *crave* grilled meat in the summer (with copious quantities of beer!).  And stew in the winter, "accidentally" cuddling with my wife as we both try to pick out the best bits from the pot.  I can tell you, to the day, when each kind of fruit should appear in the market and I'm waiting impatiently for each.

I bought AC for the guest bedroom this summer because my niece was coming to stay for a month (as a kind of Japanese homestay).  We used it.  This has been the longest, hottest, most horrible summer since I've been in Japan.  AC is no good for people.

Having said that, I'm getting older and I have health issues.  I can't go a winter without heat.  I will literally die.  Some day soon, I will have to have AC.  I scold my mother in law (who is in her mid 80's) that she *must* use her AC when it is over 35 degrees with 60-80 percent humidity.  She ignores me, but I can see the toll it takes on her.  She knows better than I what she loses when she uses that AC.

For many, it's hard to see why you would endure discomfort.  Now that I've done it for almost 10 years,  I can't imagine giving it up.  (BTW, there is *nothing* in the world that is more decadent and amazing than a hot water bottle in the winter.  You have not lived until you try it :-)).

Once the spores are released, it grows pretty quickly on sand, etc.  Maybe go up to the soil layers and expose some sand/clay/etc.  Has to be underground, of course.  If that doesn't grow, then I'll be surprised.

If you need some safe place for your grazers and you don't have grassy moss, you can cage them or put them on restraints.  Dwarfs with "Animal Care" enabled them will feed the grazers either with plants, or prepared meals (even if the prepared meals are made entirely of meat).  They will also get a good thought and will have their "help somebody" need satisfied (verified that on 44.12 the other day).  Grazers in cages can't breed, but grazers put side by side on restraints can.  Factory farming FTW!  BTW, for some reason this does *not* seem to work for grazer pets (even if you enable "Animal Care" on the owner).  However, I haven't verified that in the current release (I don't have any dwarfs with grazer pets at the moment).  In previous versions, the only way I got grazer pets to survive without grass was to allow them to follow their owner (who will feed them periodically even if they *don't* have "Animal Care" enabled).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: That First Werecreature....

My werebeast strategy, which has never failed me:  If you have animals near the werebeast, burrow all your dwarfs behind a door or two (as mentioned previously).  Move your squad so that they are together (and have their weapons, etc), but still behind the door(s).  As soon as the werebeast turns back, run out and kill them (OK, I occasionally fail to get them before they get off the map, but it's pretty rare).

In the case that there are no animals nearby, choose *one* of your dwarfs that you like the least.  Put them in the military if they aren't already.  From the squad menu you can station single dwarfs (this is super useful, although the UI is a bit confusing).  Station the dwarf near the werebeast.  This will buy you enough time for the rest of your dwarfs to turtle.  If the dwarf survives (only happened a few times for me), inspect the combat logs closely for bites.

If the have a bite, a few days before the full moon (to give them time to have a drink, pray, or whatever) station them out of sight of any other dwarfs.  I usually just station them at the side of the map.  A stationed werebeast will not move unless they see another creature.  Even if the happen to see some wildlife, if they are at the side of the map, they will always kill it before getting to close to the fortress (because werebeats are super fast).  And then they will just stand there.

If you had bad luck and you manage to potentially infect more than one dwarf, send them to opposite sides of the map (you've got 4 sides -- if you manage to potentially infect more than 4 dwarfs, then that's poor planning, not poor luck).

Never be afraid to sacrifice a single dwarf to a werebeast.  A single casualty in a werebeast attack is cheap (as you probably already know).  Always be afraid of sending an entire squad to fight a werebeast.  That will bring down your whole fortress.

Also I could not be more excited at the prospect of further TLC updates.

I can verify.  Here is a picture of Dunamisdeos when noticing the update:

Is there any *vanilla* way to monitor monitor the reduction in stress?  Do happy thoughts reduce stress?  Does having needs fulfilled reduce stress?  Does being idle (as observed above) reduce stress?   Or is it simply that avoiding stress allows it to time out eventually?

The introduction of stress seems to be fairly obvious (unhappy thoughts, and maybe working too much??), but the reverse is really hard to understand.
