DF Community Games & Stories / Tales from the Thunderforge: Embark
« on: May 08, 2022, 06:11:03 pm »
A bit of narrative, which I’ll continue when I get some time.

Old Thjorr peered thoughtfully at the contents of his pipe for a moment before answering.
“Nope.”
His six companions sighed despondently. Bagroff flung the reins down and let the oxen plod to a halt. “Earlier there weren’t any sand, before that there were too many trees, yesterday that valley had no stream! What’s wrong with THIS place?!”
Old Thjorr looked him squarely in the eye and shrugged.
“Nothin’,” he replied, pulling his cap down over his brows. “If you don’t mind aquifers.”
Bagroff gritted his teeth and returned to the reins. The wheels creaked as the cart moved on.

“Hold fast!”
Bagroff felt a shudder of anger at the old dwarf’s command, but pulled up the oxen again.
“What now? If you dropped your pipe back there we ain’t going back for it!”
He had asked Old Thjorr to join the group because of his experience in prospecting, but he had done nothing but annoy Bagroff every step of the way.
“Here’ll do.” Thjorr said with a quick grin. He jumped off the back of the wagon and stood lighting his pipe.
The others looked up in surprise and began to stare around or pull at boxes and bags.
“Porrig! Wake up! We’re here!”
Elga shook the shoulder of a fat dwarf, sleeping in a pile of coiled rope. Porrig sniffed the air and smiled.
“Sandalwood and orange groves. That’ll make a good brew.” He opened his eyes and gave Elga a wink. “Reckon we’ve got work to do!”

Bagroff ticked off some runes on his slate as he went through his list, then tucked the silver stylus behind his ear.
“Right” he announced. “Now we’re here we need to get dug in afore the wolves get hungry. Thjorr and Orlf will put an adit in that bank there.” He nodded at the hillock rising through the tree line.
“Elga, Porrig, you two grub round for some forage; berries and that. We’ve got supplies for two weeks if we go easy but the sooner we get a still running’ the better we’ll be. Drenna and Grikk, whack a few of these trees down so we can put up a door and get a fire going. Once the tunnel’s dug the first twenty yards we’ll get the stuff in and knock apart the wagon.”
The dwarfs all nodded their assent and grabbed up picks and axes. Bagroff put a hand on Thjorr’s shoulder and smiled.
“Strike the earth!”

Life Advice / Design software?
« on: September 02, 2021, 04:10:29 pm »
I’ve started a new job which involves designing furniture which is then built in wood by guys in a workshop. I’m trying to optimise the process and produce cutting lists for them. Currently we use Autocad Lt, which has ‘dynamic blocks’ so I can stretch the design and auto edits the parts.
BUT I’m sure there must be an easier program for the task, and I wondered if anyone has done anything similar and had any recommendations?

I can use Blender to a certain degree but that doesn’t give me the text, and I could rig up a text based cutting list in Excel, but it doesn’t include the visual. There’s gotta be some other software designed for this very purpose, right?

DF General Discussion / Slade?
« on: September 25, 2020, 09:15:00 am »
Why 'Slade'?

Possibly beause it's 'heavy rock'? (the Band of Noddy Holder)

or maybe demons are incarserated in their Slade Prison, somewhat like Norman Stanley Fletcher of the sitcom Porrige?

Does anyone know the actual origin of the word? :-)

DF Suggestions / Fossils?
« on: September 05, 2020, 08:42:20 am »
Not a game-changer by any means, but perhaps fossils could be added to the game? Just micro clusters of bone in sedimentary rock of a randomly chosen animal. Obviously these would be very rare, and only usable for bone carving, but it’s an idea that I’ve not seen in Dwarf Fortress before.

DF Modding / Help with silver vs weres
« on: August 25, 2020, 01:19:48 pm »
Hi all,

Is there a simple way I can make were-creatures more vulnerable to silver weapons?

I thought it should be easy, but then, the weapon isn’t ingested...

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,
Thunderforge

DF General Discussion / Skill vs Equipment
« on: August 09, 2020, 04:20:54 pm »
I thought I'd have a play in the arena  to test whether it's more useful arming & armouring my dwarves or spend their time training. So I pitted a highest Axe abilty warrior with a wooden training axe against an unskilled dwarf with iron weapons and armour. Not sure what I was expecting, but what happened amused me;

Urist McNovice made a few attacks but Durin McBadass casually stepped out of his wild lunges.
Durin McBadass slaps Urist's right arm with the flat of his axe.
Urist drops his axe.
Durin McBadass slaps him repeatedly with the flat of his axe.
Urist manages to drop his shield also.
Durin coninues to slap him about the head, body and legs with the flat of his axe.
Urist cheerfully points out that his armour wearing skill has improved.
Durin continues whacking him in the head, then removes Urist's facemask.
The whacking continues until Urist McNovice passes out.
The whacking continues until Durin passes out from over-excertion.
Apparently Urist's head stands up well against carambola wood.
Eventually Durin regains his composure and finishes him off; but it definately felt like he was toying with him!

So I think I'll have my lads training more often than pumping the bellows!!

DF Modding / Thunderforge's Dwarfier Names
« on: August 09, 2020, 02:52:23 pm »
I didn't feel that the standard dwarf first-names were very ... dwarfy, so I altered a bunch of entries in the language_DWARF.txt file. Just paste the following over the top of your existing language file and you too can have Gimlet, Cuddy, Flint, Modsognir and Thalgrim running your fortress. Yeah it does make some of the item/fort names different, but I can live with that. And no, I haven't removed Urist!
This is edited from the latest version of DF as of the date of posting, but I will endeavor to keep it updated and amend the list if I have missed any names.
Please reply if you have any suggestions to add!

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Okay the list is so long I have to post it in two halves!! (see next post for the rest!)

DF Modding / Graphics and Raws
« on: August 04, 2020, 11:31:01 am »
So... if I make loads of amendments to the Raws, and then I install a graphics pack using LNP, it resets all of my Raws?
And before I start my tantrum, they aren’t saved anywhere else are they??

DF Gameplay Questions / Booze cooking and preferences
« on: May 08, 2019, 02:14:02 am »
Last week I ran out of seeds. To be fair I had a few hundred lavish meals in stock, but it got me thinking...
If I brewed all of my Plump Helmets (to keep the seeds) then use half of that brew for cooking, I’d be fine. But if a dwarf has a preference for a certain ingredient does he still get a happy thought if that ingredient has been brewed THEN cooked?

Another question is... if I mod the name of a booze in the plant raw (ie Plump Helmets brew into Bugman’s XXXXXX rather than dwarven ale) does the dwarf still receive a happy thought if the original ingredient is his preference? Or does the game handle it as a barrel of something new?

DF Modding / Modding raws causing crashes
« on: May 08, 2019, 01:35:01 am »
Hello, I always make a few tweaks to the raws before I play, usually nothing major (change the name of Adamantine to Gromril for example). I’ve been running the game from a memory stick too.
The other day I created a world which shut down DF on embark. Retried it a few times and figured I must have fudged a raw edit somewhere, so I switched the raws in the folder for clean ones. Same problem.
I updated java, (don’t even know if DF uses java), didn’t help. I wiped my memory stick clear and reinstalled it and it ran fine (new world gen and embark). BUT when I so much as opened and hit Save on a raw file (without editing) it crashed on embark again.
Also tried this on another computer which did the same.
So my question is, does DF check the author of a txt file? Or the date of it perhaps? Or am I being Urist and missing something obvious?

Best wishes
Thunderforge

DF Gameplay Questions / Change Goblets to Tankards?
« on: August 15, 2018, 07:35:01 am »
I've been making little tweaks to the raws to make my fortresses a little more homely (for example easy meals are now 'on a stick', and adamantine is called gromril)

I want to change 'goblets' to 'tankards' but that item doesn't seem to have a txt raw. Any ideas?

Also if anyone knows how t change the name of title I'd be happy to know. I think my dwarves would be more willing to respect a Thane or a Jarl than a Mayor or a Count!!

Cheers in advance,
Thunderforge!

DF Modding / Name Generating
« on: August 04, 2016, 02:15:42 pm »
Greetings, brothers of the Mine!

I'm pretty new to this Dwarf Fortress business, still cutting my teeth on my first few forts. Luckily there hasn't been too much 💀FUN💀 yet!

But I wonder how DF generates the dwarves names, presumably there is a .csv list in the programming somewhere?
Is it possible to edit the list or is it embedded in the .exe?

Basically I want to automatically generate names of my own rather than names like Nindo PolishedHornets.

So, my esteemed and long enduring longbeards, what do you say?
