DF Gameplay Questions / More volcanoes means more sedimentary layers?
« on: September 27, 2023, 05:22:20 pm »
When I research this issue, I always find informations about old versions, and usually they say that more volcanoes increase the probability of sedimentary layer.

However, after the steam version was released, I saw reddit posts saying that volcano increases igneous layers. And personally, I have experienced that when I use custom world parameters and increase the volcanoes, I encounter less sedimentary layers.

What is the current status of new versions about this issue?

DF Gameplay Questions / I'm at peace with goblins
« on: January 21, 2022, 02:28:51 pm »
In the world I created in Perfect world, I am at peace with all the neighboring goblins and they are not coming to the invasion for a long time (2 years in-game and 60 populations). Is this a bug?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Questions about glass floors

The problem is that all my military dorfs are fighting sickly because of this. Their speed is also very low. Now I have to start a fortress again and take cave adaptation into account. Geez sometimes losing is not fun at all.

All constructed walls and floors are opaque and effectively indestructible, regardless of their material.

Thanks for the answer.

So there is no way to prevent adaptation other than to set up a meeting hall outside like humans?
I don't understand why this nonsense (which is absolutely against lore) exists in the game.

Do glass floors let light in and prevent cave adaptation? And during siege (goblin or necromancer) can enemies destroy glass floors?

Thanks in advance

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Create New World parameters

Thanks.

Island means ocean on all four edges of the map.
Lol. The reason why I ask this is that we can turn any region preset into an island with perfectworld, and I thought if this is in perfectworld, it can be done with default text editing or with advanced parameters editing in the main menu too. So the fact that there are two different presets, island and region, confused me.

When I create a new world as medium-default on the Create New World screen, is the parameter used the same as the medium region parameter in the advanced world gen? Also, what are the differences between medium region and medium island?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Skill Lists Without Dwarf Therapist
« on: January 08, 2022, 04:16:28 am »
I would eschew the notion DF should only be played vanilla. There is little intention behind the awkward interface, it is an admitted stopgap - see Steam version.

Thus, using dwarf therapist is OK. But the best option is the already mentioned dwarf manipulator - it fits seamlessly within the existing df interface, and allows efficient keyboard strokes to assign labors.

DFhack is a trusted and well-used utility that is not in -any- way going to prevent you from experiencing DF "as it was intended."

Actually, the reason why I avoid Therapist is not exactly vanilla obsession. While using Therapist, I spend little time on the game screen and have to constantly alt-tab, moreover since I am new to the game, I also have to look at the wiki page every now and then. All these different windows and alt-tab processes make me feel like a white-collar office worker :D

Apart from that, I realized that, without Therapist I can be more interested in dwarves just like in Rimworld, by keeping in mind who is who in the fortress. In Therapist, dwarves become creatures made only of boxes and numbers.

But I didn't know about an in-game Therapist, it might be just what I'm looking for. Many thanks to y'all.

Thanks for your reply. Is Dwarf Manipulator something in-game or a separate program like Therapist? Also how can I add it to the game?

DF Gameplay Questions / Skill Lists Without Dwarf Therapist
« on: January 07, 2022, 03:32:25 pm »
I want to play the game as vanilla as possible so I don't use dwarf therapist but I miss some of its features.

For example, instead of checking which dwarf has which skill one by one with u-z, is there a screen that shows which dwarf has experience with a specific skill? For example, is there a screen that lists dwarves with experience in the crossbow skill or dwarfs with experience in the carpenter skill?

I hope I was able to explain my question with my terrible english :P

So there's no way siege can bring "fun" after you seal your fort. So why are we doing military stuff then?

During siege, can goblins, necromancer armies, etc. destroy your walls and/or bridges? Do they use siege equipment like catapults/ballistas etc.?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Finding workshop for instrument pieces

Well thank you it seems that i can make both pipe and pump at Kiln. It's kind of weird that the manager screen didn't show this tho.

DF Gameplay Questions / Finding workshop for instrument pieces
« on: December 30, 2021, 03:56:23 am »
The instrument i want to make needs 4 pieces. Keyboard, console, pipe and pump.

I'm trying to figure out which is the right workshop for making these parts. Keyboard and console can be made at craftdwarf's workshop but can't find pipe and pump ones.  I use manager to find the correct workshop of them but there is no warning about what is missing. When I look at the Details section, I can't see the raw material either.

I know that the instruments are procedurally generated, I created my own world using the perfect world, do you think the problem has anything to do with it?

Thanks in advance.

DF General Discussion / Why geographical names are in elvish?
« on: December 24, 2021, 11:33:01 am »
Why world, continent etc. names are in elvish?

What i mean is, let's say the continent name is Big Earth, it's Etagber in dwarven language and Mamosaba in elvish. It is referred to as Mamosaba in all Legends and on the world-creation screen.

Is there any lore-based reason about that?
