Other Games / Re: Telltales new game... very interesting + trailer.
« on: August 29, 2010, 07:06:11 am »
This page makes me think a new Texas Hold 'em is coming. The "Coming soon" and the "1" are quite telling.

The first one was an interesting thing, and I'm sure Telltale has made loads of improvements on this one. It'll be fun.

All this collaboration with the companies makes me wonder if one day there'll be a huge "WHOOMP!" sound as Telltale disappears and Valve suddenly comes out with an adventure games division or just loads of people that know how to make them.

Oh man. Team Kiku, the team leading the tournament, apparently decided to take the 200 points for the clan combo scores. They already lead us by 10 and they have only a few scores under 2000 points. Bringing them down would require colossal effort, so let's try keeping the second place and get points from other sources instead. I'll have a second try at SpEn, hoping to get a few new runes and uniques (Shoals turning up would be great).

The Blacksmiths keep going back and forth through places 10.-14., It'd be amazing if we managed to stop the pendulum at 10 when the tournament ends.

I just started a MDEn, the newest Nemelex Choice, as that seems actually winnable. After this game ends, one way or another, I'll concentrate on bringing Eli down, and/or Blacksmiths over LostArtBrewing in the high scores.

Wish me luck.

And oh yeah, we're doing good, many victories, dozens of runes and high scores, hundreds of uniques and ghosts, thousands of points and millions of turns. Also, the score of the Bay12 teams combined would make the second place in the clan list, that tells how insanely good and devoted the best players are.

I also have to recommended this new TF2 commentator IcyToonie.
Besides having 'Toon' in his name all of his videos have high video quality, high audio quality, and a really nice voice to boot.
I haven't found any good "How to play Sniper"-videos, but here's just a commentated gameplay clip by a good player. If you enjoy Let's Plays, many of his videos deserve a look too, despite the slightly nervous commentary. There's even some using the new engi things and the Heavy one completely changed the way I play that class.
Kind of beat you to it, though I didn't explicitly say who the guy was. Anyway, he definitely deserves a second mention as he's becoming better at commentating with each video. I found the guy by chance after looking for exactly this kind of videos (which there is surprisingly little of) soon after he started. I've watched all his videos to date and I dare say it has made me a better player and there's just something therapeutic about watching someone play a game really well and explain why.

Not free though, but it would be to suppport a poor (not anymore) Swedish indie dev.

head's server seems to be down, so I guess there's no Bay12 action going on until jay or PTTG find time to update their servers.

While we wait, I had an idea that should be pretty cool (and possibly proposed ages ago in the thread): Making a duplicate of a DF fort or city in Minecraft. I'd really love to see a full scale human town built with trees, roads and all in Minecraft. I think I'll start on something like that when some server opens. The problem is choosing the thing to duplicate.

PC Gamer posted it's huge interview, it's in two parts: one and two

There's a lot of interesting stuff in there, but the part I found most intriguing was this:
Quote
And we have guys who read Something Awful, because we try to read TF threads on every forum we can find, basically.
Dun dun dun, it might be that Valve has been listening to us all along. And as they have even invited Toady over, it seems like a fair chance. Soooo,

Hi TF2 Team!  You're doing good and your plan of making happy customers has worked really well with me! Tell Gabe and Robin I said hi, and that one Finnish guy too.

*cough*

Oh yeah, the interview happened on the 8th of August and Robin thought they could get the update out this month or just a bit over that. We might not need to wait for September 31st after all!

Ooh nice, huge congrats Daenar!

There actually is a string of first-time victors now, like I hoped before :) Also, 3 wins and #1 slot on the combos for the Blacksmiths, I couldn't ask for more, nice job guys! Let's keep this up, we're even getting almost close to the Bay12Dwarfs score last year.

EDIT: Whyyy did I lose this guy? This makes me sad, I've never got this good equipment in the early game before. Two really good artifact rings, a nice weapon of vampirism and a guardian spirit amulet (with one of the rings boosting MP) as a Trog worshipper. Teaches me to go to unknown minibraches and playing at work I guess. Got a pretty secure high score though and I must say Vampires and Berserkers actually feel like a good match.

Anyway, I can't seem to get past the early game. It's kind of boring playing through the start over and over  again, leading to me not paying attention as much as I should, leading to having to start over again. A vicious cycle of really stupid deaths.
I had that happen to me too before the tournament. I broke it by playing a good character overly safe. Throwing rocks and weapons at everything before they got to me. Always drinking a potion or teleporting away when there was even a small chance to die. Never staying in a branch or level too long when there was something that could kill me.

Then when I started feeling pretty good about my character, I broke this rule and went after Nergalle in Crypt with a shining new axe of holy wrath. So I died.

Life Advice / Re: Puberty: How hard is it?

Heh, cracking voices. Every time that happened (or happens) to me I tried to imitate the same kind of crack again ironically and laughed it off, which was customary in my friend circle. Seemed like the most natural thing to do. I mean cracks tend to sound pretty funny.

But yeah, I'm with Neonivek, I never really had a day when I thought: "Hey, I must be going puberty" I never noticed armpit hair growing or anything, it was all so gradual. The only thing was the voice really.

Hey, congrats tinymouse on the first Bay12 Sprint win and Demos for the sweet streak! And Baruk for an unlikely escape.

I seem to be having luck with the combo characters. My Naga Monk died at 40 000 points and just now I had a Vampire Gladiator that just refused to die until I pulled out all the stops. I just rushed through blindly the early game, found the Temple, chose Xom for the hell of it, found a dagger of distortion and started flailing everything with it, then started to ascend stairs as fast possible with the aim to reach Slime and a Jiyva altar. I actually did reach Slime, though I died shortly after with 5000 points. Melee Vampires that keep their blood levels way up are actually scarily effective, I even took two ghosts down on the way.

General Discussion / Re: Bay12's Desktops
« on: August 18, 2010, 03:27:18 pm »
The only cool thing in my desktop is the backgrounds. Now only if I could make a program that automatically changed them.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

The TF2 achievement icons are surprisingly suitable for my taste in desktop backgrounds, simple sleek pictures with few colors.

Taking this picture finally made me delete all the unnecessary shortcuts. Though I left all the flash games made by a friend of mine.

Holy damn, didn't except getting this far with a Naga Monk, though I played it safe with Chei, using the Naga's natural slowness to build up piety before throwing on ponderous armor. Then I cleared a few levels and kept finding armor, lastly even a naga barding. I'm now wearing all 5 possible ponderous armors and the stat boost is huge. Strength 29 and Dexterity 31 on a XL:10 character, pretty nice.

I'm way past the score to beat, but I hope I'll get far. Finally a great Cheibriadonian!

Haha, my tree torch line to Greiger's mine (and the few that extend the radius) are clearly visible. Though it seems like one tree is missing it's torch from the top. It's right next to spawn, should be easy to fix.

But wow, there's so much stuff I haven't seen yet.

Yep, DF is pretty known in Finland. I've said it before, but a stranger actually interrupted a discussion I was having with a friend only to ask if we were talking of Dwarf Fortress. Which we were.

And on another occasion, after watching a movie with a group of six people, someone mentioned DF and it turned out every person knew the game from different sources.

Oh cool, Dwarfish actually has the words to write my last name. So, you can call me Eshimid from now on. And if we end up in the same fortress and get to first name terms, Lashėd is pretty close to that. Lashėd Eshimid.
