Other Games / Re: Team Fortress 2: Jakkarra's map: ""Хорошо!"
« on: April 14, 2010, 01:40:16 pm »
As Jakkarra's map has started going places, he wants to get votes to decide how it should look. So here's the thread to voice your opinions, cast some votes, talk about your own maps or even ask for mapping advice!

In less fun news, I'm starting to feel quite burned out on playing TF2, so I don't really have the motivation to organize the team for the ETF2L Tournament. If there's someone who'd like to get on that, awesome! I promise to help in advertising on this thread and the Steam Group, but in figuring out the roster and schedules not so much.

Oh yeah, there's a video of Jakkarra's map in it's current state and I dare say it looks really promising.

EDIT: Jreengus took up the tournament thing. Go Jreengus!

Ooh, haikus you say?
I do not mind if I do,
Trained them for a while.

Yeah, being non-English, I thought it was impossible for me to count syllables and learn haikus, but MC Frontalot gave a good tip in some podcast and said that you just have to clap out the sentences to hear the syllables. It works pretty well.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Let's Play Adventure Mode 2010

Cool, I was looking for an outlet to say things about your new videos. Like about the dwarf that joined you which you didn't notice until the next video.

If you are interested in my first Adventure Mode LP series covered in a previous topic, which I would rather not be bumped, you can find that series (80+ videos, multiple adventurers) in this playlist:  Let's Play Adventure Mode
I think it's possible to lock topics you created, so you can make sure no one goes and bumps it just because you mentioned the possibility.

For starters Alnos Handsevere (to-be named the Meandering Trouble), Dark Paladin, joined the church of Olin, the god of darkness and deformity and promptly gouged out the eyes of all of his priests to help them follow their own advice. Sadly the attempts at strengthening their faith caused three of them to jump into the central pool of their temple and drown. I guess they reached some kind of darkness that way too.

After escaping from the angry villagers Alnos arrived to an elven village conquered by dwarves, where he met a crazy administrator* who was clearly incapable of giving out jobs to do as he seemed to have forgotten where and who he is.

Having no heroic quest to do, Alnos decided to do the work of Olin and bring darkness to the elves of the south instead. Thirtysomething corpses later he came upon a lowly Fishery Worker. The battle raged on for a while, until the Paladin's morningstar got stuck in the elf's EYE. He twisted it off, but seeing how this poor thing had darkness brought upon him in the most gruesome way possible, considered the deed done and headed back north.

So once someone gets those diseases it's pretty much a death sentence for them, right? Can it wash off? The dust, I mean.
No washing off from the lungs. I asked Deon earlier on Steam, just means they'll slowly die in a much earlier age than they would've otherwise.

It's a tad difficult to train with a sword if you do not have a sword.
That's the way dwarves train philosophy.
I first thought you meant that dwarves don't have brains. Which was actually true before this version? I already don't remember.

636
We tried the training thing when the Mini-Tournament thing was going on and then we really didn't know how to train so it was pretty weird. I think the easiest and best option is playing some matches with and against each other on TF2Lobby, Jakkarra showed me that and it's an incredibly easy way to play Pick-Up Games and makes it possible to get reliably back to a game after a crash and everything.

I agree a separate thread might be good for this tournament, but should it be in "Play with your buddies"? Anyway, I'll get on that when I finally get home.

You know how people can make a roll of their tongue? I can do that, only upside down. I've still to find someone else who can do it and believe me, I've been trying to find out, it's a real fun thing to show to people I've just met.

The weirdest part is, I just can't understand how anyone can roll their tongue the "right" way. Me trying it looks exactly like other people trying to do it my way.

I guess my tongue muscles are upside down or something.

I guess it's just generic cell fluid. That's a bit salty.

The reason for the saltiness is that as first organisms formed and "joined" together to make cells, the membrane that formed around them also encapsulated water which was essential for moving stuff around in the cell. That water was salty sea water and as time passed, the cells (that are now in humans too) evolved to work optimally with slightly saline water in them.

So, let's see, the classes to players list looks like this, after I added Scout to myself as a potential class: [is Non-Euro]

Scout: LASD
Soldier: [Mr.Person], [Dr, Johbson]
Pyro: Myroc, [SHADOWDUMP], [umiman], [Dr. Johbson]
Demo: [Bandages]
Heavy: [DoctorZ], fenrif
Engineer: Jreengus, [Dr. Johbson]
Medic: LASD, [umiman], [Dr. Johbson], fenrif
Sniper: [Bandages]
Spy: [dragnar], [Mr.Person], [Cheeetar]

Not participating: [Zai]

Also, from the FAQ:
Quote
Are non-European teams welcome?

Yes, as long as you are fine with playing on European servers and in European timezones.
So, it's all fine, except scheduling will be tricky.

Next important thing:
Quote
How many people can be in one team?

14 people can be registered to each team. Make another team if you have more players (eg Community Team A, Community Team B, etc.) You cannot play in more than one team.
So there's nice leeway as only 9 people are included in a round and the classes can be juggled between players too. Another team might be possible but it might get a bit iffy to find 28 Dwarf Fortress people wanting to participate in a competitive tournament.

Currently we have 12 people expressing interest, 3 of whom are a bit doubtful about joining (SHADOWdump, Mr. Person and Dr. Johbson), but I know a few people that haven't spoken up or noticed this who are likely interested. Let's keep listing and see what we can come up with, and if people will have the honor of joining the DFC or Bay12games B-team too.

Then the most important thing! (Not really):
Quote
Can you tell me more about the in-game medal?

The in-game medal will be like a hat. Everyone can see it.

You will win a medal when you A) Win the tournament (winners medal), B) Finish 2nd in the tournament (runner up medal) or C) Are eliminated from the tournament (participation medal). You do not get a medal for just signing up.
So, the tournament has to be finished to get the shiny, awe-inspiring, tiny medal.

640
The new blog post included this Highlander Tournament  for people that haven't played much or at all competitively. I'm not sure if it's exclusive to Europe, but even if it is, we should be able to gather up a Bay12 team. The signups start at the end of the month so there's plenty of time to fight over classes.  :P

I'd be happy to be the Medic (big surprise). Even if it is possibly the nastiest class to be in competitive play.

Oh yeah, did I mention you get a shiny in-game medal for just participating in the tournament?

Good news, my writing partner started writing after all and I got cool new characters from him to use. Like the daughter of the Grim Reaper. I thought it appropriate to give her a sickle to use as a weapon.

Also, the Reaper himself tied nicely into the story and made it easy to send the main character to action. The point is now that Death is pissed off at the undead for making his work worthless as everyone he kills comes back as living dead. And having only the power to kill the living, he needs help to defeat the dead.

I'm actually surprised how planned out this is starting to sound as the point was just to ramble and stumble blindly ahead to 100 pages.

Then to slightly bad news, the script is only 16 pages long. But there's 2 people writing again, so it will happen! Also, I just blasted past my daily quota without even noticing. Writing was actually easy, fun and fast.

And finally, the great news! This project is doing amazing things to the problem I've always had with writing: I think of every word and sentence too much and keep editing them again and again and again, even if they're just fine already. Now I've just kept writing, not going back to fix anything else then the most blatant mistakes. The time for refinement is when the whole thing is done, otherwise it will just slow down the project until it ceases to a halt.

Right now they are filled with yellow pus and rotten flies material. And they breathe it out.
The funny part is, earlier with the same adventurer, I drank some of that pus and was completely fine. It was only the breath that got me good.

I don't really like in-jokes, especially forced ones. They don't really serve other purpose than make those "in the know" feel superior and the others feel alienated. I find little enjoyment from laughing at something when someone else is going "Huuuh?" right next to me.  I guess there might be some feeling of achievement to be had from finding out the jokes, but still they are only funny the first time you hear them (often not even then) and annoying at all other times.

Also, I wonder how many people know the word 'meme' only to mean viral internet idiocy instead of 'cultural replicator' and how Richard Dawkins feels about that.

The terrible in jokes and memes are the worst thing about this community, and they're the reason a lot of people avoid the forum for anything but say the Future of the Fortress thread
I actually stopped reading that thread because it became so overcome with annoying spam. I only read Toady's messages in it through his profile. It's rather sad that thread is the only image most people have of the community.

I thought lost adventures were harmless until one breathed on me. Oh the horrors! I was just finishing my trek through the tunnels, but instead I collapsed on the North Bridge with my blood trailing me for dozens of metres.

Also, checking my destination I found a temple with the cavern floors UNDER it engraved.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Funniest Names
« on: April 07, 2010, 02:37:46 pm »
(Bump, this was the only name thread I remember seeing and with the new version should be interesting to read)

Not really funny, just absolutely amazing:

A goblin civ that is composed of:
  638 dusk elves
  32 dusk elves as prisoners
  781 normans
and only 7 goblins

The name?
Lonngerxung, The Subordinate Wickedness.

... too awesome.
