generate an error message in the error log. Topic subject limit wasn't long enough. >_>

Anyway, I was making a custom creature with a custom color pattern (yellow and black stripes) and I was having a hard time getting it to work. After fixing a few syntax errors in the descriptor raws, I got it to work, but the error log never generated an error message, despite the creature having an undefined color pattern.

DF Suggestions / Body raws: CONCATEGORY argument or similar.
« on: April 01, 2010, 08:42:18 pm »
Elsewhere, body parts can be called by type, token or category. In the body raw file, however, it seems that body parts can only be connected to parent parts via CON: (for BP tokens) or CONTYPE (for BP types). A CONCATEGORY thing would be nice.

I went and did this earlier today, this is a collection of posts I made on a different forum.

Started an adventurer and got a quest to kill a hydra. Found his cave, couldn't find the hydra but eventually I found a tunnel that led into a huge cavern area. Wandered around for a while (also fungus-trees grow in the caves now), found a Giant Cave Spider. Hacked all her legs off one by one and killed her.

Now I've found a colony of friendly blind cave fishmen. Nice.

I borrowed some of the fishmen's giant olm haggis and saved one of them from a pack of troglodytes before continuing on. Haven't had any luck in getting to the lower areas yet where there's supposed to be demons and things.

New creatures found so far include Crundle, Pond Grabber, and Elk Bird. The elk bird is a bird with elk horns wat

Found a largeish circular bottomless pit. Can't get down it without jumping in it, which probably isn't a good idea. Nothing else interesting yet besides the random packs of naked mole dogs.

I just "discovered a downward passage," this should be interesting.

Nope, so far it's the same as the last area. At least I'm closer to the bottom now. Wait-

The Voracious Cave Crawler falls over.

Oooh, I want to find one of those.

It says I discovered a magma pool but I don't know where it is.

Also I'm drowsy and thirsty and I haven't seen any water in this region yet.

I found the next region below, which had a pool I could drink from.

I also found the cave crawler. It was really slow, but very resilient. I was hacking away with a battle axe and it didn't die until it finally bled to death.

On to fortress mode!

Some time ago, I predicted Tunnelwound would be the Last Great Fortress of version 40d, and with a revolutionary new release of DF just around the corner I expect at least one or two of those words is correct. Tunnelwound is not the greatest fortress since the z-axis was created, far from it, but I expect there won't be a whole lot more like it before the release of DF2010.

I was going to make a long, epic story about it with adventurers coming to the great fortress of Tunnelwound years after it was abandoned and slowly finding about the history and everything, but  I'm a lazy bastard, so no story time. Sorry. Here's the map archive and some pictures. Some of the pictures were taken when I first started the fort (and have been posted somewhere else at least once, but its nice to have everything in one place), some were just taken today.

The plateau is 100 z-levels above the valley floor, give or take a couple.

This fortress brought to you by Shadowlord and Markavian, the makers of the Map Compressor and Map Archive. 1.7 gigabytes of BMPs were disemboweled in ritual sacrifice to summon this map archive. The .fdf file is 283 kilobytes. Dear Armok, that's a lot of compression. Kudos, guys.

Arright, now I'm gonna take a break from DF for a little bit.

I've converted my depot into a drowning chamber so I can attempt to persuade the elves to attack me. I recently carried out the first successful run; successful in the sense that the depot room actually flooded anyway. Sadly, the fountain below the depot I used as a water source was slightly smaller than the depot and only about half-full anyway, so the water ended up spreading out in the depot room to about 3 or 4 levels deep. Hardly enough to keep a carp alive in, let alone drown an elf.

Anyway, about half the traders were flushed into the fountain with the backwash when I reset the trap, which I'm pretty sure if nothing else grants me bonus points. Even after I refilled the fountain, though, the elves didn't die. I guess they can swim or something, or maybe if there's open space on the level above the water you can breathe if you're not wounded enough.

So I leave the elves and their donkey whore down there for a while and forget about them. A few weeks later, one of the elves finally goes beserk. The fountain turns red. Yay!

But, I leave them alone for a minute and come back, and I find an elf corpse and a wounded donkey on the rim of the fountain on the level above. I'd give the elf a wooden trophy, but the elf apparently drowned or something silly like that.

The donkey, freed from erotic slavery, now wanders my fortress. The unit list describes him as "friendly."

DF Modding / Sneak Preview of upcoming mod for DF2010
« on: February 25, 2010, 09:24:23 pm »
A wee bit messy, but most of the important bits should be correct and I've left footnotes to myself in the more suspicious places.

In any case, I have been mentioning that I have been working on a total conversion mod for the new version, carefully constructed from the previews of the overhauled raws we've been shown from time to time. The theme of the mod is of a game you may or may not be familiar with, but in my opinion is one of the greatest free MMORPGs of all time.

And so, without further ado, I present to you four creatures. Enjoy.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / HFS meet the Bear Trap. (spoilers)

The fact that the only squad leader awake enough to defend the exit about five minutes in was that particular squad leader was sheer coincidence. Good thing I forgot to floor that hole over.

Here's the second half of the fight. Tip: Angry clowns have a hard time setting you on fire when you're not wearing anything flammable.

I award my dwarves bonus points for that drama moment near the end. Most of the video can be skipped after the initial battle, though.

The mountains and pit take up a 2x2 space, and an open chasm runs through the two mountains. More of a pointy hole, really.

Too bad it doesn't have a magma pipe in the fourth corner there.

DF Gameplay Questions / How aggressive are angry elves?
« on: June 30, 2009, 05:07:29 pm »
I just realized I went six logs over the tree limit. This being the first fort in which I've had an elven diplomat, do they start sending ambushers now, or do I have to break the treaty several years in a row?

41
I ctrl-f'd the bug list for "ambush" and I didn't find anything like this, I apologize if I missed it.

I was ambushed by an ambusher party at the edge of the map. However, I checked and no dwarf was around the revealed ambushers. In fact, there was way up or down the mountain from the ambushers' position, aside from the map edge.

Then I noticed that among the horses was a horse foal. "That's odd, I didn't think invaders could mount young animals." Although wild horses did spawn on the map, these ambushers were far up in the mountains where no wild horse tread. I looked it up in the unit list and the foal was listed as "hostile." That's odd.

Then I check the announcement log. Just before the "An Ambush! Curse them!" message, there's an announcement about a horse giving birth to a horse foal that I didn't notice before, despite checking the log shortly before the ambush warning.

Given all of the above, I deduced that in one of the previous raids, possibly even one of the very first ones, one of the ambushing parties became trapped on the mountain almost immediately due to the massive mining work I've been doing. They sat there unseen for years, the horses got bored, and now one of them has just given birth. Because the game wasn't expecting ambushers to last this long at all, let alone without being discovered, it didn't handle this optimally.

I don't have a very recent save from prior to the ambush discovery, but I do have a save from (assumingly) the exact frame in which the ambush paused the game, if that would help at all.

42
Or can it veer off to the side a little?

This is very relevant.

43
An invading civ with both the [SIEGER] tag (light campfires before a siege) and the [AMBUSHER] tag (able to send ambushing parties) will send ambushing parties that sit around and light campfires before invading, while invisible, which kind of defeats the purpose of the ambush.

Perhaps the SIEGER tag should only modify the behavior of "true" sieges rather than both sieges and ambushes?

Ctrl-f'd the bug list and searched the bug forum, didn't find anything like this.

It's the symbol of my current fortress. I must say, they have excellent taste.
