The biggest problem with putting Dwarf Fortress on Steam in its current state is that DF can't really have automatic updates. Major updates are often crashy for at least a few days and a few of the biggest ones have broken save compatability due to major overhauls.

Rainfall and drainage only seem to affect whether an area is a coniferous or broadleaf forest, not whether it's tropical or temperate.

If you're sure it's not based on temperature, it might be based on latitude. Make sure you have at least one pole.

Really? How strange. I must've blocked it from my mind because there's absolutely no need for anything more than a 5x5 plot.


My 5x5 plot became insufficient before the end of my second year because all the foreigners were emptying my food stockpile.

I can confirm that if you have an elven resident you have the option to build a temple to their nature spirits. I haven't made such a temple yet, but it shows up in the list of gods to dedicate the temple to.

Trees make it basically impossible to run out of food. They drop a LOT of fruit.


Never running out of food has been trivial since long before trees were added (outside of frozen wastelands, which don't have trees anyway).

Why exactly is Future of the Fortress locked? Does that happen for every big release?


I think more specifically it happens when the development page gets a rework. Toady's been talking about that recently; I'm assuming the Non-Player Artifacts section is gonna get more fleshed out since that was planned to be the next arc and it's a little stubby at the moment.

Related to the dev log but not to development, there's been a lot of unsightly double-minus usage lately (--). You can easily make an n-dash (–) with Alt+0150 or, if you prefer, an m-dash (—) with Alt+0151. I like the n-dash better but either would be preferable to the double minus.


All a matter of taste -- aesthetically, I like the double dash best, personally.
