make placement like roads... i think the road placing engine is nearer to the idea than the farm plot... because it uses items, and farm plots are free.

or make the material selection before placing the wall...

i had to download that 3d ascII game. also i like sim games like stronghold, and this is by far the most complex and complete i have seen.
