DF General Discussion / Re: Funny Devlogs
« on: September 01, 2017, 03:01:31 pm »
I remember there was an article somewhere (PC Gamer maybe?) that listed all the funny DF devlogs. Stuff like "rain melts fat off dwarves" and "baby adventurers don't start with knives anymore".

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: What's going on in your adventure?
« on: September 01, 2017, 02:25:35 pm »
I decided to raid a goblin fortress with my current adventurer. I slaughtered some goblins and trolls, gained some skills, rescued some children, etc. It is important now to note three things:
  • I had around 30 children following me at the time.
  • I jumped everywhere because I was carrying a *ton* of stolen crafts, and so walking (and even sprinting) was very slow.
  • The corridors in the goblin fortress were very narrow.

You can see where this is going.

After exploring one branch of the goblin fortress I decided to backtrack. I jumped backwards -- right into the swarm of children behind me. I slammed into about ten of them, those ten slammed into ten more, and so on. There were children flying *everywhere*. Some of them completely *exploded* upon impact. Overall about 5 died and 10 were severely injured in the aftermath. Those that survived must have gained some wicked dodging skills...

Many of those who are injured are either unconscious or have lost the use of a leg (or both), so I will be forced to abandon them, meaning that all I've done is basically rescue some children from the prison only to smash them apart and then leave them to die. Which doesn't really fit in a role-playing perspective, so I think I'm gonna savescum.

On my first run I chose everything randomly, since I didn't know anything about the game at that point. Turns out I got a pretty decent starting character. I tweaked it a little bit after that, and so far this is what I have:

Relic: Vodun's Mask -- It is very useful to see where the enemies are on the map so that I don't stumble upon one when I'm not ready, and I know where to look when I want to fight.

Primary Element: Mind -- Alluring Gaze is good to break up large groups of enemies that would otherwise destroy my party.

Secondary Element: Body -- Life Siphon is good as a secondary attack when attacking an enemy resistant to Mind attacks or when I want to heal a little as well.

Companion: Zaltys -- Zaltys's healing abilities come in really handy during combat, providing cover for those with more effective attack abilities.

If any of you have starting builds which you think are better, feel free to tell me.  :D

Its crazy how shallow people are.
Every once in a while I stumble upon a YouTube comment saying that DF is "dumb" due to the graphics or calling it a rip-off of Minecraft. (For those who don't know, DF was in development long before Minecraft was and the creator of Minecraft actually called the game a "clone" of DF.)

I have to fight the urge to mentally explode when I read those comments.

Well, it does on my system :P Though I'm using an old version of openSUSE on a laptop that's already pretty old, so maybe that has to do with something.

So your doing what therapist does for you manually. No thanks lol I'll stick with the quick and easy method and just use therapist. I have not seen a downside to using it, but I guess you have since you stopped.

Eh, it wasn't that there were downsides to using therapist, it's actually very nice. Hmmm...

I forgot why I stopped using it, huh. Must not have been something important, then haha

I try to avoid using DFHack when I can, because of the frequent crashes. Maybe that was your reason.

I don't think half-demons will happen for the same reason half-elves probably won't happen

Interbreeding is planned, last I heard.
I wonder if half-breeds will be able to breed too.

That's usually the reason given for why it hasn't been implemented yet. Can you calculate the range of appearances and stats of the guy who's parents were a half-goblin elf and a half-gorlak snail-man?

Not impossible of course, but needs a lot more time than simply rustling up a quick half-elf template.

If we let worldgen run long enough we'd create significant populations of half-breeds, meaning that natural selection comes into play.
Which results in the world's population eventually evolving into all-powerful god-beings.

DF General Discussion / Re: How did they make the graphics of this game?

I still advise doing it yourself.

It REALLY is a very easy thing to do... and you'll learn so much more about programming by thinking through the process, instead of just downloading the first library to handle it that you can find.
Don't reinvent the wheel. If you find a library that does what you want to do, use it. You're just wasting effort otherwise.
Besides, doing what you suggest would involve interacting with the terminal/OS directly at a very low level, making your program unportable and probably requiring special knowledge that I doubt the OP has.

Can we freelance sell our magic paint to non magical people? I'm sure there's some rich idiots out there who wild love to have something "magic", even if they don't know how to use it. It's probably best if we sell to people that can't accurately appraise the quality of our product.
+1

Our #1 priority, in my view, is to make money, so I'm +1-ing anything that helps us do that.

IIRC the meat-dissolving part of the pineapple occurs mostly in the outer edge. If I cut that off I can eat the pineapple just fine.
Also, I consider it heresy to eat a pizza WITHOUT pineapple.

DF Community Games & Stories / Re: Murkknife - 1000 Dwarves; One tile.

You say the game slows down significantly after 200 dwarves on a 4x4 embark. A 1x1 embark is 16 times smaller, so if FPS scales linearly (probably not true) the game slows down significantly after 3200 dwarves. This is of course, an enormously simplified calculation.

Fake-Edit: Well, actually, FPS is more correlated with amount of revealed space than embark size. If we suppose that only approximately a quarter of the available space per layer is used on a 4x4 embark, and all of the available space is used on a 1x1 embark, then the FPS would only be 4 times better, and the game would start slowing down after 800 dwarves.

I play with ASCII, and I generally don't do any modding at all on my worlds. I do change the init.txt and d_init.txt files a lot, though -- stuff like disabling the intro movie, disabling save compression (due to save corruption issues), lowering the popcap to 140 and enabling seasonal auto-save and backup.

All of you realize that Trump isn't actually going to build the wall? I mean, he's a narcissistic, racist, sexist demagogue, but he's not stupid. The wall is financially infeasible and isn't actually practical at all... I mean, seriously, someone could just use a frickin' ladder. The sole purpose of the "wall" idea is to get Trump elected. And now that he has, he's going to act like progress is being made while actually doing nothing.
