The project consisted of three parts. First, constructing a delivery mechanism on this side. Then, sending through a bomb. Then constructing an unloading facility on the far side. There were many approaches to consider.

Akras was pleased to sign a new contract with Vigil Henderson and Ricardo de Castillo regarding their new joint venture, 'Vircardo'. Vircardo would provide general fitness and martial arts classes on the station in an elegant and high-class environment. The initial setup fee was expensive, but the proposal was strong and Akras was interested in developing it. [Marketing 88 - strong success]

Vircardo began 20,000 credits in debt. Half of the money that is paid for martial arts training now goes to Akras, and half to Vircardo. Once the debt is paid, the two enterprising instructors will be allowed to keep Vircardo's share. Note that they can only provide training to level 2 at this time.

Mission 2 Begins.

Staff:
Danh Loi, Demolitions and Security
Vigil Henderson, Martial Arts
Ricardo de Castillo, Martial Arts
John Christian, Security and Sensors
Wolfram von Steinheil, Archaeologist
Kaito Yoritomo, Gauss Specialist

The team assembled once more in the Gateroom. It had been some time since the last set of incursions while readings were analyzed and plans were put together. The mission briefing began, with the usual set of items laid out, with the usual speech from Chief Archaeologist Rupert Langdon.

"Just like the last gate, we don't have any means of telling where or even if this gate opens on the far side. Keep alert, and take readings. We'll be assigning a Gauss rifle to Mr. Yoritomo for this mission, and a demolitions pack to Mr. Loi. Mr. Henderson will be assigned the medikit. Before you step through the gate, take some time to set up your strategy. I'll be here to answer any questions."

Mission 2 Begins.

Staff:
Tina Murdoch, Drone Specialist
John Boiy, Archaeologist
Stella Evenglide, Gauss Specialist
Sertan Tarf, Security
John Cross, Support and Security

Murdoch, Boiy, Evenglide, Cross, and Tarf sat at a conference table in a meeting room at Akras Mars, planning out their operation. The room was brightly lit. Two of the walls were glass, and overlooked the red landscape of Terra Cimmeria, Mars.

Potted palms sat in the corners where the walls met the windows, and in the third corner there was a large, flowering plant, each maintained by an automated planter connected to the central systems. The table in the center of the room lit up with a layout of the Castle on Mars, and the surrounding facility. The team's first challenge was to hypothesize, design, and assemble a system to carry the bomb, as well as drones and construction materials, from the Starport to the Castle. This system could not rely on automation, but must be workable by human staff.

Biology Skill Update

With the return of alien samples, characters trained in biology would know approximately the following.

Biology 0/Untrained: The rushers and horror knights are synthetic, and made of something poisonous.

Biology 1: They are silicon-based, and have a vastly different genetic structure to ours, being vastly more different from a human being than a human is from a banana. We share 50% of our DNA with bananas, and 0% with the alien weapons.

Biology 2: They use 12 molecules for their equivalent of DNA, with 500 million instructions, making them vastly more simple than human design. Many of the molecules involved are unstable out of the mix, and scientists do not believe that they could have arisen naturally anywhere. They do not metabolize food or oxygen, instead consuming some form of charge from alien power systems that is not yet fully understood.

The station was busier than usual, with construction crews moving around. Thick tubing on the floor carried makeshift power to construction zones and walled off areas, while floor-drones sprayed a thin mist to gather the dust. Akras was beginning to expand. The news came on to the wall screens between scenes of nature.

"A startling discovery rocks humanity this week as Akras Heavy Industries reports that an alien structure located on Mars can indeed project wormholes to pre-determined destinations, as many archaeologists had speculated. A team of astronauts returned from outside of the Sol system earlier in the week."

The image showed a group of people in combat space suits emerging from a portal in the Castle, with corporate executives smiling and applauding, and Champagne being served.

"The team found a derelict observation post around a binary star system, and were able to explore it. They were able to conclusively prove a connection between Castles and drone malfunctions, and neutralize both our drones, and a group of alien combat drones they encountered within the facility. Unfortunately, the facility was in an unstable orbit, and crashed shortly after the team's return."

Images of drones being shot up and rushers being shot down was played.

"Unfortunately, several of the astronauts were wounded, one critically, Ms. Stella Evenglide. She is expected to make a full recovery.

The image showed Stella being taken off on a stretcher, with a thumbs up from the medical staff.

"As of this news, excitement has dominated Akras' stock prices, with the expectation of broader discoveries drives Akras to the forefront of human space exploration. Akras stock closed at 31 credits per share today."

"In other news, the EEC has agreed to a support program to assist Austria in exchange for the liquidation of important historical sites. Despite numerous requests from the Austrian government, Germany has declined any sort of merger or reconciliation process. The funds are expected to last for the next several years, after which time the budgetary problems seem likely to rise again. Critics sharply condemned the agreement from the left and right, with both claiming that this does little more than kick the problem down the road."

Akras seeks engineers and archaeologists to conduct salvage operations on the station lost in the asteroid impact. The gateway is still functional after the collision, and Akras is preparing to send a plasma bomb through the gate to clear hostiles. It is unclear how many hostiles will survive in the area around the portal.

Mission parameters will include securing a perimeter around whatever is left of the gateway, searching for supplies, and establishing a safe facility to assemble a scout ship for mineral exploration of the system.

Mission pay: 3kc per astronaut.

End of Mission Summary and Report.

The Board of Directors is labeling this mission as a success, though not an unmitigated one. The team was tasked with determining whether the gates could return, and in that sense, they were successful. The loss of the facility on the fire side is deeply disappointing to the Directors, but they understand that time was a critical factor, and there is only so much even a skilled engineer could be expected to reverse engineer in two hours.

The Directors were pleased that a sample of the alien creatures was recovered from the facility. According to analysis, it seems to contain complex organosilicate structures that lab technicians believe to be artificial. Details will be made available in a subsequent paper, available to those willing to pay. [Will post details in HQ]

Individual employee assessments and rewards are as follows. In addition to the 3kc promised to each of you, you will receive a bonus of Akras Stock based on your performance evaluation. This may be sold at any time for the present market value, available in the most recent news post.

Frazz Goldman 50 Shares
Goldman took early command of the mission, though he was quickly harrowed by the events unfolding around him. Human Resources credits him for his important medical work in keeping Kaito Yoritomo capable and fighting. Frazz will be moved temporarily to low-intensity assignments while his medical needs are evaluated.

Kaito Yoritomo 30 shares
Kaito Yoritomo provided competent cover fire and assistance, but was not presented with an opportunity to take the lead on any important projects, having been injured numerous times over the course of the mission. Human Resources credits his timely intervention for de-escalating the conflict between his team mates partway into the mission. The Board looks forward to seeing Kaito's talents under better circumstances.

Stella Evenglide 80 shares
Despite severe injuries, Stella Evenglide proved exemplary. Beginning early in the mission, her sensor proficiency was able to calculate a timetable to the drones' arrival that allowed the team to take superior positions. Her flanking maneuver, while suggested by another member of her team, was a tremendous success, thanks in part to her singular strike that eliminated the drone in a single blast. While heavily wounded, she was able to neutralize an enemy, and collect samples, the only samples returned to us. The board strongly values these samples, and she is being rewarded accordingly.

Danh Loi 60 shares
Danh Loi's effectiveness on this mission was unquestionable. He is personally responsible for the destruction of two malfunctioning drones, and rushed to provide critical supporting fire when the alien security measures were deployed. Danh was effective in showing restraint, reminding others on multiple occasions to preserve the value in the facility, and minimized the damage from his own explosives. However, Danh Loi displayed a mix of personality disorders on this mission. He is encouraged to seek medical attention.

Ian Klemmer 20 shares
Ian Klemmer's performance on this mission was most disappointing. Although he was able to patch a damaged space suit early in the mission, he quickly fell into an apparent fugue, taking very little initiative and performing only those orders his squadmates requested directly of him. The loss of the facility reflects poorly on him, however digital analysis shows that ultimately, he took risks to save the station that were not inadvisable.

John Boiy 40 shares
A young archaeologist, Boiy was one of the early volunteers for this mission. Despite a lack of combat training, he was able to assist in the destruction of a drone. He made important findings in the observation room that helped to direct the team's task, and worked diligently through heavy fire to try to save the station. While he was ultimately unsuccessful, his efforts were duly noted.

Ricardo de Castillo 80 shares
Ricardo's unorthodox methods of warfare are more reminiscent of the Green Arrow than a soldier, preferring to fight with a mix of primitive weaponry. Analysts were initially very skeptical of this, however de Castillo ultimately proved them wrong, acquitting himself far above expectations. De Castillo was able to meaningfully damage a drone with his bow, but more importantly was able to use his melee weapons to expose both the heavy combat drone and the alien security device that is being referred to in the lab as a 'Horror Knight' to heavier fire. Ricardo provided the impetus to collect samples of the aliens that the lab techs are referring to as 'Rushers', and is being suitably rewarded. The Board wishes to express, however, their desire to see Castillo replace his bow with a standard magnetic pdw on subsequent missions.

Wolfram von Steinheil 50 shares
Wolfram von Steinheil acquitted himself well, providing excellent services as an archaeologist and interpreter. He was able to discern the layout of the facility, and to create a framework for sorting addresses which should render dialing home trivial in the future. The Board of Directors is pleased with the care and excellence with which von Steinheil performs his duties.

Sertan Tarf 70 shares
Sertan Tarf excelled in this mission, both as a leader and a combatant. Frequently assuming command of the squad, Sertan displayed extraordinary tactical prowess and accuracy with his weapon, killing two drones, leading a maneuver to outflank a heavy drone, and destroying many of the alien defenses, including the 'Horror Knight'.

Vigil Henderson 40 shares
Vigil's performance in this mission was exceptional. He provided medical services to save a valuable member of Akras' team after rushing into a battle he knew little about. He provided critical battlefield initiative in the battle against the heavy combat drone. The Board notes with some pleasure that Vigil was helpful in nearly every stage of the mission, appearing frequently as an assistant, but encourages him to specialize further.

Jonathan Cross 20 shares
Cross performed professionally, engaging in firefights competently throughout the mission. Cross took very little initiative in the mission, participating competently in firefights and providing important support, but was ultimately unable to display the level of excellence his personnel file led us to expect. Akras notes that like Vigil, his broad array of abilities made him a useful support on the mission, and notes that his deference to others may have been due to his confidence in Sertan's planning capabilities. He willingly engaged every enemy, often placing himself in danger. The Board recommends in future that Cross have more confidence, and hopes to see him excel in smaller, more focused teams.

The gate closed, and the stunned looking executive breathed out and laughed, nervously at first, then with a plastic polish. "I can't wait to read the aggregate report."

To their credit the laser gunners watched the space alertly anyway. There was a small department of six that aggregated suit video feed to create an audiovisual report at the end for the executive teams. Some would be sold to the newsreel, and featured in an action report.

You flew up the ladder just before gravity turned on again. The sounds of claws scraping against metal followed the team as you went through the gate one by one, emerging back on Mars.

Security officers held their laser turrets loosely, smiling broadly. A champagne bottle popped and there were cheers as you came back in, and a round of polite applauds. A banner hung up over the door read:

Welcome Back to Sol!

Half the executive was here to shake your hands and greet you home. There was a gasp as Stella limped through last with Ricardo and Sertan. Medics ran forward to take her off, and executives nodded down somberly and held their hands over their chests, returning to their party smiles as soon as a medic gave a thumbs up, applauding her hard and smiling like they'd just won the lottery.

[Mission 1 is formally over. Take a little bit of time to RP out here. The executives will review your performance and issue bonuses in an end-of-mission analysis to be posted tomorrow.]

596
Stella is moving slowly, even in zero-g, and will probably need help to be sure she gets out fast.

597
Ian and Boiy worked diligently with the help of the others in engineering to get any kind of power online. Power slots into place eventually, with a sphere on another pillar. Air comes rushing in to the room, and sound fills your senses. An alarm. Maybe you can't work out controls, but the walls start to bleed grey fluid, dozens of times more than there was a minute ago already starting to pool. [Engineering 5 - botch.]

Fortunately, Wolfram and his team were luckier. They were able to sort out the cypher, and dial home. At least, they're reasonably sure. The portal opens up the ladder. [75 - strong success]

598
Boiy could run an analysis on it, if he wasn't so busy working on repairs.

599
Reloading, you still had a few spare magazines of magnetic rounds each. The suits were well-stocked for an extended mission, if necessary.

600
The helmet seems to melt more slowly back into a grey metal, leaving streaks of metallic orbs floating in Ricardo's wake.
