Time to try again, this time with a new fort and dfhack's dwarf manipulator (The last one got a bit tedious with job assignments). I customized the embark only slightly, removing a few medical supplies so I could get more skilled dwarves. What could go wrong.

The starting seven are... sub-par, to say the least. Most of them are old ladies over 60, and most are also weak and slow to heal. One of them is 88, the oldest dwarf I've seen. Let's just hope nothing nasty comes.

====================SPRING====================
Nothing much of interest happened during this period. Most of it was spent sorting out beds, food, drink, etc.

Apparently, kaolinite can be used in place of clay, although I'm not sure why I would, since we have a whole ton of clay already.

Workshops are being built, with small 6x6 feeder stockpiles to prevent these dinosaurs of dwarves from walking 50 tiles with a stone.

The living quarters have been finished:

Oh crap. Wolves.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / First undead siege.
« on: May 15, 2017, 11:14:32 am »
The dead walk! Or at least, one did.

I had settled next to a necromancer's tower and thought it would be a long time before any sort of siege. Turns out, I was wrong. Late fall, a single goblin bowman corpse comes to my fort and lays siege.

Turns out, the gate was set up wrong.

Frantically, I conscripted some random hunter hoping he would take care of it. He did. Sort of.

He charged the corpse, dodged an arrow, and tackled it, then began repeatedly punching it in the face. He was winning, and I was going to make him a militia member forever, and-

He fell unconscious. Crud.

The corpse began beating the fainted crossbowdwarf with it's bow, and killed him quickly. I sent another expendable, who died even faster, and then another. He also died.

Finally, I sent my entire fort out to kill the thing. They won, but a fishery worker was wounded in the process.

The four valiant defenders have been placed in a tomb, and statues of them are being commissioned.

Three new migrants have been enlisted, and are training in the new and hastily built barracks.

Our miners are franticly searching for any metal to make battle implements with.

We might have lost once. But we will win next time. We will rebuild, we will rest, we will grow strong. The necromancer may have won his first fight, but let's see how he handles his next.

DF Gameplay Questions / Help with plumbing.
« on: April 27, 2017, 01:14:28 pm »
So, I'm trying to set up a plumbing system that will go all over the fortress, providing dwarfs with bathing water, providing wells and hospitals with drinking/cleaning water, mist generators in the dining hall, and eventually, drown elves.

I've ran into a few problems though.

One is a big one: My fortress floods every time because of water pressure. So, I need to reduce the pressure. Somehow.

The second problem is getting water to go up and down, as well as powering the pumps.

The third is the space it will take up, I'll probably end up skipping every other level to allow for piping.

One last problem is that I need a way to give dwarfs a bath (Totally unnecessary, I know) without having them get sucked down the drain, or contaminating the water (Could be very bad if the dwarf who just slew a vampire decided he was dirty. Or it could be very good.)

So, how do I solve all of these? And what would I need to do to get magma plumbing in as well?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Help with job assignment
« on: April 26, 2017, 03:04:01 pm »
So, I'm having fun so far, and I am beginning to build my fortress in the caverns. I have one problem though: Jobs. I have no idea who to assign what, how many workers I need for each, and what I should do about my military situation (The current squad consists of a bunch of elderly ladies and two teenagers, completely untrained).

So, I need to know how many people I need for each of these jobs to get them done well:
Mining
Carpentry/woodworking
Masonry/stone working
Fishing
Farming/Plant processing/Brewing/Cooking
Woodcutting
Anything else I need that I didn't think of.

(TL;DR: How many dwarfs should I assign to the basic necessary industries so I can get them taken care of and work on other more complex industries?)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Boredom
« on: April 23, 2017, 02:46:00 pm »
I've gotten really bored after fortress number 3. It's always the same: Build, retire, build, retire, etc. I've tried starting near goblins, near towers, but to no avail. So what am I supposed to do?

So for this fort, I want to start focusing on on some new things, like visitors, traps, military management, attracting a monarch...

But I keep having to micromanage the more mundane tasks, like food and drink industry, or the plump helmet farms. I also have to micromanage the dwarves labors, to make sure everything is running along smoothly. Is there a way to automate this stuff? I have DFHack installed, if that helps.

DF Modding / Is it possible to disable migrant waves?

Basically what the title says. I'm looking for a way to disable ALL migrant waves. Is it possible?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My civ is dead, what do I do?
« on: February 27, 2017, 02:16:17 pm »
I started a new fort, and after only receiving the two hard coded migrant waves and not getting the liaison, I checked in legends and found out that the civ was dead. My goal for that game was to become to mountain home, so I'm contemplating restarting. Should I?

So apparently you can do this, but I still haven't found on how.

So, how?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Ideas for a fortress?
« on: February 24, 2017, 11:11:32 am »
I don't know what to do now that I've finished fort 1 (Or rather, lost, but you get the idea.). So I was wondering if anyone here had ideas for what to do in fortress mode?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / How to have fun in adventure mode
« on: February 22, 2017, 04:19:50 pm »
This is a rather broad topic, so let me sum it up real quick:

Every time I try to play adventure mode, it always ends with me being killed before I can complete a quest. I've tried the wiki tutorial, but I can't seem to get it to work.

So, how do I get started in adventure mode?

DF Suggestions / Rebalancing curses (Mainly for adventure mode)
« on: February 21, 2017, 11:13:25 pm »
As of now, getting "cursed" is never bad, in fact, it's quite good.

My proposal is that the effects be changed so that there's a chance of something other than becoming a were beast or vampire. This curse would be affected by the deity's spheres, for example the patron deity of deformity might cripple you, or break one of your arms. This is just one idea, there could be many others.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Duel of the fates, a request for help.
« on: February 21, 2017, 03:46:45 pm »
My current adventurer is a vampiric necromancer, and is battling a goblin swordmaster. He has scored the only damaging hit, a heavy blow to my hip, which left the weapon stuck inside me. I'm on the ground now. What do I do?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / How to install just DT?
« on: February 13, 2017, 12:20:20 pm »
Hi, new player here.

I love every part of DF, and don't want to change it. I like the ASCII graphics, I like playing as just dwarfs, I like keyboard only controls.

There is one thing I want however.

I would like Dwarf Therapist, and just Dwarf Therapist installed. I don't wanna download a pack of mods and utilities I will never use (Low storage space on my laptop).

How do I do that?

DF General Discussion / Who is the player?
« on: February 10, 2017, 09:08:26 pm »
So my first fortress has lasted about 2 years, and I've been thinking: Who are you? Your orders are instantly cued, you can see whatever the dwarfs see, you can never die, just the fortress. So who/what are you?

Also, extra question, what was chapter one of the game, the title states that it is chapter two? Is this just a silly little thing added by the developers?
