Yeah, I still play.

I'm trying to build a submarine, and the clockwork contraption grind is a bit daunting.

I try to minimize my trips to prison, but is there really any downside?  I also try not to die, but being a regular player on the chessboard might have advantages?

Nice details!  Its all the little touches like this that really bring it alive.

The same studio also made Republic: The Revolution, a "take over a country" game that's also flawed.

I really wanted to like that game.  I was so excited when I read about it, how you could decide to assassinate priests if they were working against your interests and how it had dynamic characteristics with how the political agendas and pawns and things evolved.

But I couldn't get into it.  I couldn't work out the interface, couldn't find a pause feature.  Not sure if I gave up before the end of the first day, or if a few days went by without me figuring out how to go to any meetings or get anything done.

I might have gotten one task done by sheer luck, and then never figured out how to duplicate it.

I like complex games, but this just had an awful UI design.  I like Dwarf Fortress, but this thing was impenetrable.  At least DF has a menu!

Dungeon Keeper

KeeperRL is a pretty cool remake.  ascii version is free, tile version is cheap.  still under development, but totally playable right now.  Has some dynamic map generation, so is fairly replayable.

xcom2 is late to the party.

I mean, lets be serious:  if Unreal (and every major classic FPS developer: Epic, Valve, Id) hadn't made their games extremely modable and then gone on to license their engines to every two-bit development studio, games like new-com would never exist.

Not many people write games from scratch anymore.  Most of these shops are themselves little more than modders.  How many games are built on the Source engine, or on the Unreal engine, or the Doom3 engine?  I'm not saying that all they have to do is string together some content and assets to have a game... but...

Starsector dude, Alex, to his credit, cut this game from whole cloth.  There is no EV-Nova engine under it, or anything like that.  He didn't license the software from Starcontrol or something.

kudos to him.

And gimme my darned industry&logistics ;)

I was hoping that Nexelrin would have delivered the player made industry, but alas no.

I really dont expect him to finish that part of it.  Instead of roughing out a framework for it, he is adding more ships and new weapons to fill odd niches, and fine-tuning the play balance of flux use, or whatever.

It is a very fine and well honed combat game.  Whomever compared it to "mount and blade in space" nailed it, with the directionality of shields and attacks, and timing of both... its very good.

But unfortunately, I came for the logistics and industry.  The combat I usually run in the command overview mode, so it is sort of wasted on me.

I'm sure it is still worth whatever I paid for it, but I'm not holding out any hope that it turns into the game that I thought it would.

I'm starting to think he's just not interested in doing anything with the Industry and Logistics portion of the game.

Unending Galaxy does far more of what I hoped Starsector would, but SS still has much more polish.

I got this on the 50% sale a couple weeks back, and I'm really enjoying it.

I see where people will find it frustrating and yes, I do wish there was a non-ironman mode where I could easily savescum in-mission.  But on the other hand, I'd never get this gameplay experience if it wasn't forcing it down my throat.  So, thanks?

I had to hire three leaders for my Skaven in the first week, and it nearly broke the bank -- but they've now got a 15 mission unbroken winning streak so we came through it strong.

My sisters lost a mission early on, and their investment in heavy armor was ripped away, but they're recovering.

You just need to treat all the units as disposeable.  Assume they are going to die eventually, and don't worry about leveling them perfectly.  You can just hire a high-level replacement later.

I'll give doorkickers a look since I played the others or haven't found them interesting in the first place.

It is a pretty light weight turn based tactical shooter.  the android version seems to be setup for cosmetic microtransactions, but you can grind a little and get all the same crap.

It isnt super interesting or super polished, but there are billions of cammo patterns and vests and pouches and lights and scopes and trigger assemblies... and on and on.  some of it has modifiers associated, lots of it is just cosmetic.

It honestly isn't that great, but if you play paintball or read TFB or ENDO every day, it might be your kind of thing.

Bullfrog

Too bad they never made any games after Dungeon Keeper 2.

I want a zero-gravity, free-rotation multiplayer FPS. Add a lead indicator (as in War Thunder) and it'd probably be my new favorite multiplayer game.
I'd just like existing zero-G games to not have arbitrary directions.

What about that "Shattered Horizon" game?  I think it was originally a tech demo for high end nvidia cards, and it did look boss.

the whole selling point was realistic, zero-g, FPS.

I guess there is still a small community that plays, you can buy the game on Desura and it will come with a Steam key.

Galciv 2 and 3 have heavy ship customization.

Distant Worlds has ship customization as well (as do most space 4x games) but no fancy custom visuals like in GC

The new xcom games let you play dress-up with your soldiers.

Doorkickers is all about tacticool gearporn.

Spore?

Not so sure about the RTT or RTS type games.

Why would you need to farm Ordinators?

The armor had a very high resale value.

Whats wrong with the GOG version?  They usually do a good job testing their emulation for each game.
