DF Gameplay Questions / incoming king, no requirements!
« on: May 01, 2007, 04:47:00 pm »
so the dutchess came, and told me what is needed for the incoming king.  first time, wow, im so happy.

but the requirements screen tells me that he has none.  everything is happy-light blue.  i have xxx architecture, xxx value road, and 0 offerings.  this is odd, because my civilization screen says i have lots of offerings.  but the king screen says i have none.

either way, the king is requiring 0 offerings, 0 road, and 0 architecture.  this isnt really what i had expected.  does anyone know whats up?

I have crossed the magma, but have not uncorked the demons just yet.  so this is the regular king, and should have demands, right?  only the adamantine king comes without demands, and only after you strike adamantine.  right?

DF Gameplay Questions / economy, belongings, and barracs
« on: May 01, 2007, 04:41:00 pm »
i want my dwarfs to sleep in the barracs, for several reasons:

- they are centrally located and have very low hauling times

- they are more space efficient than rooms, even though the barracs are very large, dwarfs can "hot-bunk" while on different sleeping schedules and multiple shifts of dwarfs can use a single bed.

- they are free when the economy is running

- mine are Royal, and individual bedrooms wouldnt be.  and even if they were, dwarfs couldnt afford them.

but the problem is, what to do with dwarfs stuff?  where can they put their belongings?  I have loaded the barracs with cabinets and chests, but they go unused.  I have tried assigning the room to a dwarf and then designating it as a barracs, but then only the owner stores belongings there.

I could make each bed in the barracs a room, so there are a hundred overlapping rooms, but then it would have a high rent.

it seems like my choices are 1, create rooms and lose all of the benefits of the communal barracs.  or 2, dwarfs get no place to store their junk, and it litters the halls.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Farming, planting, will it grow?

depends.  sometimes if you plant too late and the next season does not support the crop, its a loss.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Ice + stockpiles
« on: March 23, 2008, 08:40:00 am »
sorry for the necromancy, but this seems to have changed in the current version and i cant find anything else on it.  im trying to do a glacier map, and i have no soil layer or aquafer.  I dont see "water" on the stone stockpile list, and i am trying to figgure out how to muddy a floor to farm.

tried building a wall out of rough-hewn (not blocks) water over a basalt floor, then deconstructing it.  the deconstructed boulders quickly melted and then evaporated, but did not leave any mud behind.

is this just impossible without a soil layer, aquifer, or underground river?  can i only subsist by raising animals and trading for booze?  somehow i dont think that will be enough for more than a hermit or three.

my god thats a horrible idea!

"oh dear, Ingish, it seems one of those horrid little naked mole dogs has crawled out of the chasm again.  I hope one of the wardogs will--OHMYGOD IM BURNING! OH LORD HELP US, PLEASE!"

i'm ashamed to say, that i ended up save-scumming.  I took appart a bridge, and floating rocks are preventing further construction across the chasm.

thus, i must refight my demon battle.   the good news is, that another goblin wave came.  so i have about 70 more goblins now. I dont have water anywhere near the battle area, so i cant put out the potential fires that way.  but i could burn them out with magma, but i think that might destroy the demon bones.  and I do so want a few things made from demon bone and demon leather.

i just used a cage of goblins to help thin out the demons.  40 gobs and 3 trolls killed 2 demons, and about 5 demons crossed the magma where they were beat down by the six-or-so military dwarves i was able to persuade to come on duty.

i've left the magma bridge retracted while the fires burn themselves out.  after about half a year, the burning demon corpses went out.  a year later, the heaps and heaps of goblin clothing are still smouldering.

this is not true.  this works for rivers and chanels, but with the chasm my bridge just sits there and is continuously suspended.

one tile bridges built from a known-accessable source of  blocks was the first thing i tried.

it seems to be random each year (or maybe each season).  i saved-scummed due to a problem with floating rocks blocking the chasm, and a seige came right after that.

maybe it was punishment for save-scumming, but i am glad to see the little green guys again.  i almost thought i'd have to start mining my own iron again.

but about that city liason, i think he might be permenantly dead.  i guess this means i should be extra careful with my seeds.

3596
well good lord, at least theyre RESPONSIBLE devils.

Jerkwhistle, by any chance is the leader of your goblin faction a Master Thief?

3597
perhaps.  i'll tap into the demons with these 40, and see what happens in the next two years.

if the fortress survives, that is.

3598
generally not.  my last large fort was in its 11th year when it ended.  the first goblin seige came in year 2.  the goblin leader came in year 5 with the third siege.

he died then, but goblins kept coming in larger and larger waves until i couldnt even clean up the mess from their dead bodies and dropped items anymore, and i just gave up.  should have used lava, i guess.

anyway, this fort im on now is in year 13 or so.  i probably had 5 or 6 goblin seiges in that time, the first one probalby came on about year 4, and im up to four years without a seige now.  i have not yet seen a single seige with the strength that was hitting my last fort

DF Gameplay Questions / goblin seiges stop coming, and dead liasons.
« on: April 26, 2007, 12:17:00 pm »
i have not had a goblin seige in at least three years.

I trapped most of the previous seige (40 gobs or so) in cages to use against the demons, but i was hoping to get another batch from the next seige.

but since the seiges stopped, i cant get any more gobs!  i have never seen seiges just STOP before.  I have killed enemy leaders before, and seiges still keep coming.  in this case, the goblin leader is a master thief whom has not yet shown up.

has anyone else seen this behavior?

also, the dwarven city liason accidentially died somehow.  im not sure how, but he has a sarcophogus in my tomb section.  and now i dont get any more liasons to offer seeds or anvils to my fort.  will they eventually start coming again, or am i on my own?

maybe if i sell his sarcophogus to the dwarven caravan, it will count as him returning home, and then i will get a new one next year?  or will they just bring the same dead guy back?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What!?
« on: April 19, 2007, 10:00:00 pm »
well, i dont mean to say that you're doing something wrong.  just that i havent seen it myself.  two guesses, and you can either take your pick or choose option C, "puke is a cracksmoker".

A - sounds like intended behavior.  water freezes when its cold, cant use it as food, dwarfs get frostbite, food gets freezerburn/spoils (someone told me this was happeing when i asked about my food becomming "worn" during winter) shit happens, life is harsh, losing is fun.

B - the game you're playing was created in the modded version, and is exhibiting problems even when you load it in the straight version.  try creating a new world in the straight version, and see whats up.

C - yeah, we've been over C.  quit bogarting the pipe.
