DF Gameplay Questions / Re: What!?
« on: April 19, 2007, 05:21:00 pm »
temperature and frostbite should be in.  i've seen other people discussing its effects.

i have not played a freezing map in the latest version, so i dont know.  but it does sound like something went screwy with an attempted mod.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Speed the game up?
« on: April 17, 2007, 06:30:00 pm »
its the slowdown to 50 thats the problem.  how much would be lost if the game only rendered every other or every third frame, or something?

also, setting everyones speed to 1 will slow down the game, considreably.  sure, more will get done in less time.  dwarfs will move very fast.  but time will crawl.  seasons will take forever to roll over.  and any events you might be waiting for, well they we be awfully slow in coming.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: which maps have elephants?
« on: April 16, 2007, 04:57:00 pm »
just dig out some channels to keep elephants off your caravan.

a few elephant traps, and you'll be swimming in meat, leather, fat, and bone.  i've built entire forts on the elephant industry.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarves and clothes
« on: April 16, 2007, 10:58:00 am »
pre-economy, they just pickup whatver they want.  post-economy, they should buy from clothing stores.  which means that you need one.  and they need money to afford it.

i have recently been trying the "naked dwarf" strategy of letting their clothing rot off, and then having a happy nudist colony.  it isnt working.  or rather it is, but my dwarfs are becoming unacceptably unhappy with their worn clothing.

they have plenty of royal-common-rooms, and other things to keep them happy.  but i've just got too many unhappy dwarfs.  so i recently started building a little clothing industry with one-piece outfits and stores to sell them.

seems to be working so far.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Dwarven smoke break
« on: April 15, 2007, 11:34:00 pm »
i dont think so, at least not permanently.  i have two huge (360 squares, about) royal dining rooms / meeting halls.  four statue gardens, that are even larger.  four dedicated meeting-halls (non dining) that are the same size as the statue gardens.  and wells sprinkled all over the place.

i get very few dwarfs wandering outside... but they still do it every now and again.  i cant lock my doors without causing problems, but i do often tell them to "stay indoors" unless there is something i need them to pickup or harvest out there.

i think what will fix this, is when Toady implements the "buroughs" feature which limits dwarfs to a section of the cave.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Adamantine artifacts
« on: April 07, 2007, 03:12:00 am »
the trick is probably to make sure that the adamantium is the nearest ore to the dwarf, which means moving all other ore elsewhere and keeping a nearby stockpile with the adamantium.

that way whenever a dwarf wants generic ore for a mood, he will pick the nearest one, which will be the adamantine stuff.

goblins are baby snatchers.  if they are in contact with you, they will send thieves to try to steal babies.  i dont know about nusiance, but i suspect that is the flag for kobolds whom just steal stuff.

also, you have to order a workshop to Extract From Animal to get that ivory out.  Regular bones are not Ivory.

you can have a longer chanel behind your floodgate, so that they drown while trying to escape.

or you can bring lava over the chasm or the river by building an aquaduct.  if it melts, try building it out of steel instead.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: A couple of questions, please
« on: April 03, 2007, 04:08:00 pm »
dwarfs need more than a season of idleness to stand around cleaning.  its a very unreliable process.  sometimes they clean, sometimes they dont.

artifacts (even non-weapon artifacts) do a huge quantity of damage when you hit someone with them.  also, the creator should drop it after a few years.  this will allow you to place it as part of a room, and increase the value of the room for nobles or the king or whoever.

"royal" quality rooms make dwarfs who use that room happier, so having an artifact bed in your barracs is nice, if not a little silly.

also also, they add to the overall wealth of your fort, which has various advantages in attracting certain types of nobles and such.

dwarfs never use small, narrow, or large equipment.  when you have a bookeeper, he can designate individual items to be melted.  until you have said noble, the "melt and item" order has no function.

1 - i think this means that the pile wont take more bins, if there are fewer than the reserved number left in your total stocks.

i dont know though, cause i never tried it.

2 - dwarfs sometimes clean, if they have no other jobs, and they're really bored.  if you're lucky.  having a couple pesants do nothing but clean may help this.  maybe.

3 - i wish.

at larger numbers, you have to stop woring bout individual dwarfs and just queue up general orders.

you just have to accept that they wont be as effecient as they would if you managed them individually, but that the effency loss is an acceptable trade for manageability.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: can the waterfall tile flood me
« on: April 02, 2007, 11:02:00 am »
wow, thats a nice flood.  but it does not actually answer the question.

if a waterfall (and no other river square) is breaking through your wall, it will still flood through.

i had a setup like that, and it kept flooding into my dining room and mudying the engravings.  i had to put statues in the breach to block the floods.
