I prefer the Diplomacy approach where all of the turns occur at the same time, but after all of the players have committed to their actions.

Space Empires IV had a simultaneous turn setting that did that.  I assume 5 did as well.

Laser Squad pionered this on a tactical level.  Frozen Synapse, as mentioned previously.

Robot Sports did a brilliant job of this actually.  Had adjustable turn lengths, so you could tune a slider and the bots would go longer between orders.  I might have got that last title wrong.

Similarly, _Reassembly_ is a shameless rip of _Captain Forever_, but it's a bit more modern and polished.

There is also this _Habitat_ game, where you build stuff out of random space junk.

Haha, Josef Bugman is #3 in the Book of Grudges.  Awesome.

I hope we get to keep our own Dammaz Kron, that would be sweet.

I wonder if some tunnels will be too low for gyrocopters, or if the underground maps will just be floor skins with some walls and obstacles?  Or if there will be multiple-level combat with bridges and underpasses and such?  I'm betting on "skin", but it should still be cool.

Before I got to the halfway point of LW, I would have been strongly in favor of playing it to the exclusion of vanilla.

As an Oldcom fan, I played vanilla for about 30 minutes before I started getting irritated, and about 3 hours before I was totally fed up.  LW made it not only playable for me, but really fun.

The problem is in the mid to late game, and I hear vanilla has a similar problem, LW just compounds it.  I think if you tweaked it to be an 8x or 16x speed Dynamic War campaign, it would probably be perfect.

But you can definitely play LW without playing vanilla.  If your friend is an oldcom fan, I wouldn't even recommend touching vanilla.  But if he likes faster paced games with simpler mechanics?  Maybe LW isn't for him.

Actually, I'm going to say that if this person needs to be "introduced" to the game at all and isnt immediately familiar with turn based tactics and other games of a similar nature, and they don't just jump on it willingly as soon as they hear that it exists and does not suck?  If you need to "convince" anyone of the games quality?  Long War is probably not for that person.

Finally finished my LW campaign.

The beginning was Amazing.

Mid to endgame?   a complete chore.

I had Dynamic war on with a generous multiplier, and reduced lots of times and costs on the config.  But it was still a grindey slog.

If I had it to do over, Id make the DW multiplier even stronger, maybe shoot for 1/8 ot 1/16 length.

I'm not sure I'm excited about the sequel any more.  The end of that campaign really ground me down.

Terra Nova for a buck.  One of the best sci-fi squad shooters ever made.  With power armor.  And squad progression.

Anyone have any good builds for current-ish Long War covert operators to share?

Scout or Assault.  Camo vest if you can.  Motion scanner.  Maybe smoke grenades.

Full grenadier build might be interesting, never tried it.

I can usually have him lay low until extraction team takes control, so it isn't a huge deal.

Out of canon, they might notbe. In cannon, who knows.
Few living beings are recognizable as anything in particular once they leave a cannon.

'Few' in what sense?  I'm going to hazard a guess that the majority of non-microscopic living beings whom have exited a cannon were entirely recognizable after they left.  Weighed against the total number of living beings, sure, there's only a few of them.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

But he said In cannon, which probably means that they are unobserved like Schrodinger's cat.  They'd be in some sort of quantum superstate until you fire it/them.

I like to imagine that the aliens in NuCom that magically inserted from the sky were being fired out of a Heinlein-style cannon (or was that from Steakley's 'Armor'?) on an orbital troop ship.  Now that the TwoCommies are flying their own xenoship, maybe we can have our own human cannonballs.

But thats just my head canon.  (fakedit: SHIT, beaten to the headcanon pun)

the free version is the same game of steam version but with no graphic?

http://forums.freeholdentertainment.com/showthread.php?6-Caves-of-Qud-Version-History/page32

Page 32-37 is the steam change list.  Most of it is bugfix and optimization, some of it is new features and content.  But there are seriously 5 pages of micronormal (munormal?  how do you pronounce that?) posts detailing the changes.  It is fairly significant.

Still avidly following the development.

As expected, I have needed to start working again and so don't have any time to actually play this or anything else.  But it sure was cool the couple of times I did fire it up!

Really I just revel in the design of the thing, and think about how to apply the lessons in my daily life.  Well, maybe not daily.  But I'm sure I can find applications at least quarterly.

You, micronormal, and the URR dude are my favorite tweeters.  twitterers? twitterati? hmm.

Yeah, generally.  When it is done.  In a few years.

But it has already changed massively from its original premise (strategic warfare, commanding armies, conquering cultures) to now, and the author isn't sure if the final game will incorporate combat or not.. who KNOWS what it will actually be like when its done.

You're right though, the current plan is for a massive mystery conspiracy sort of game, which sounds super cool.  But it isn't a game yet.

Reminds me though, The Magic Candle.  Not a roguelike, but more similar to Ultima 3 / 4 or something.  Awesome puzzles.  Awesome quest.  Get some Dosbox and play it.

I think it is well within canon that exterminatus is the only reasonable solution to demonic incursion.

10 BBs? I think you're effed, mate.  They out gun you.  Thats the kind of problem the Imperium would have to call in resources from other sectors to solve, and I don't think that is within the scope of the game yet.

Cheat and buy 20 BBs of your own?

what?

URR is a scenery generator.  He just barely got NPCs in, but they dont do anything yet.  It's just a tech demo at this point, there is no game there.  You can explore it, but there isnt anything to /play/

Although it is awesome, and you should follow the development of it if you are interested in learning about those knowledge areas.

Caves of Qud has a great quest, though it isnt finished yet.  No real puzzle elements.  It is back in active development though, and you can follow it right here on this forum.

Cogmind has a quest in the sense that Nethack and Rogue have quests -- get to the end of the dungeon.  But it /does/ have much more story along the way, and is quite playable even in alpha.  Also right here on the forum.

Cogmind is probably better on the puzzle side, in that there are minigames like hacking, and finding optimal character builds and play styles is a mini-game / puzzle in of its self...

but I cant think of anything off the top of my head that incorporates Sokoban style levels.
