The Aegis of a Forgotten Mind

Tol Anath, High King of Radiance, a Titan Ascended, Might Lord over five universes and Master of a million Realms. His might was supreme, until he was betrayed by one he loved. While he was felled in a single blow, a ritual prepared long ago wiped the memory of himself from those with the power to do him harm. This was his Aegis against disaster and betrayal. His power would recover given time, and he would one day return to his throne.

Though his power was mighty, enough that with a breath he could create a million galaxies, he was not infallible in his rituals. By the barest of margins you escaped the scope of the Aegis, and had the ability to latch onto the fallen Titan. While he is still frightfully powerful, you and a few others seize the opportunity to leech strength and power until the King awakens.

The Vareinia, the Outer Lords (You)
Powerful beings, holding a whole plane of existence inside their being. Gods beyond the ken of mortals, whose lives pass in but a fleeting moment in their ken. Parasites gorging themselves, praying their host continues to sleep.

Players join as one of these Outer Lords. You are not the creators of the world, instead you join after the fact to usurp it. Your goal is to gain as much power as you can before your host, the unconscious Titan Tol Anath, awakens. There are ways to delay the awakening, and perhaps even permanently prevent it, but that will take the use of the very power you are trying to usurp.

The power you gain increases as your influence spreads.

Outer Lord:
Name/Description:
Domain: 1 major, up to 2 “minor” based on your major: Like Destruction, War and Betrayal
Spreading these increases your influence and thus power gain. Generally you won’t “level up” your power gain until a legendary or particularly noteworthy action takes place. (Example domain of love would get tiny unnoticeable gains from regular marriages and loves, but might get a large bonus from an epic sprawling love affair. Intent is to prevent gaming the system by balancing rare domains with more common ones. )

Plane Name/Description: Inside of you is an endless plane of existence in which you have the power to create at your leisure. Preferably fits your domain. You can add to this at will, but beware generally you can’t remove or destroy things from your plane. Denizens of your plane generally won’t be able to transfer to the world of Tol Anath for long, but they can be summoned and bound by knowledgeable cultists or sorcerers.  (Consider this your creative playground, I won’t really mess with it).

What Do You Require to Summon you Presence?:(Consider this your entrance fee, they are paying the power costs of grabbing your attention or summoning something from your realm.)

What to do: Influence the mortals to give you more power. Tol Anath has birthed a race called Humanity to advance his awakening. They can be corrupted to further grant you power, instead. However, you are too far removed to interfere directly. Time passes quickly, only allowing a few actions to advance your interests. While you will be able to form cults, it will be hard to form a major religious following as you won’t be able to respond as quickly as the minor gods that crop up. But you do not necessarily need direct worship, as the more of the mortals that act and particularly perform great feats in accordance with your domain the more power you will earn.

So what can you do? (Potential actions, Ideas)
Artifacts: You can forge your power and presence into a mighty artifact. The true artifact resides in your plane, however a corresponding lesser Reflection can be placed int he world or given to favored mortals.

Create a Cult: Gather like minded men and women to worship you. Due to your limitations, you most likely won’t be able compete with quicker responding Gods, but they cannot match your overall power.

Incarnae: Compress a portion of yourself into a mortal form. They will have no memory of your divine history, but will retain a motivation and access to some of your powers. Will generally collect a following and may start a bloodline, spreading your gifts.

Generally a lot of actions are fair game, but Keep in mind that you are twice removed from the mortal realm, and only see it as through a distant reflection through a body of water. The gods that spring from the beliefs of the mortals may be pale weak things in comparison to your power, but they are more present. You may perform great acts once or twice in the turning of an age.

Spoiler: Character Sheet (click to show/hide)

Probably taking up to 6 players. Let me know if you have any questions or suggestions. Basically think Daedra from the Elder Scrolls and you’re headed in the right direction.

Power: Power (Level) is a measure of how strong your Outer Lord is. So a Power 2 isn’t significantly stronger than a Power 1, but a power 10 is. Your Artifacts and Champions and stuff would level up (and delevel) with you.

While our improvements to training and equipment have gone an impressive distance in ensuring that our cultists will reign supreme over their demonic counterparts, the reality of logistics means that further uparmoring will likely be restricted to only the most experienced, relegating most of our forces into a light infantry role. So why do we not equip them with an iconic weapon of the role, the Javelin?

Smaller and lighter than the spear; this javelin is not a replacement for our cultists spears, but instead meant to be carried in addition. The speartip of this throwing weapon is made of soft iron, so as to ensure that it bends severely after impact so as to render it unable to be used against us. Lead is placed behind this speartip, so as to lend more weight to the strike. With our cultists opening the engagement with a hail of these weapons, surely the demon's forces will falter once our organized lines meet their broken and injured ones.

Magic Missile Flashers

The magic missile is adjusted to release its energy as incredibly bright light and loud  sound, but otherwise doing little actual damage. The goal is to leave targeted enemy soldiers blind and confused, leaving an opening for our soldiers to capitalize on. The energy costs are about the same as the base magic missile, but more energy can be put in to increase the effect.

I was leaning shadow raiders but Failbird made a good point about their potential counterability, so I pulled up Jilladilla’s Javelins, and another revision I found in my notes. Either of the revisions above provide I think good options to improve our cultists ability to do damage at range and close quickly where we have the advantage.

My Old Body: A Master of a Noble House.
Kolm Darkstone, Male Dwarf

Aye, our most fearsome King, Ruiner of Arnack, Lord of Iron Sorceries. He was a good king. Well, he was obviously Evil, of course, but gold flowed into our capital like never before. Every Dwarf was nearly a lord back then! Darkstone, they called him, because he ripped his own heart out and put a chunk of obsidian in its place. Yeah he was a nasty fucker, alright. They said he threw a feast every night, and every night he would challenge an unfortunate son of a bitch to a game of skill. Their choice as to what. If they won, they would live the night and if the skill was useful they might get a position in his retinue. If they lost he would rip their souls out for his dark purposes. Even if they won that night, King Kolm was a jealous one, and they would invariably find themselves dead once they outlived their usefulness.

Aye, he was a bad one, but he was ours, and the Dark feared him. He was not a fat fuck lounging on a golden throne like you see nowadays. He was a proper Warrior King. The Darkstone Order was founded in his time, fighters like you’ve never seen. Others may see them as just fancy mercenaries, but don’t you forget where they came from.

The Darkstone Clan? Bah, they plot and scheme, but they never lived up to their founder. A few bright sparks, but they sit in their towers and peddle goods like most of the High Clans. You got to look at the Kingdom of Frostbard. King Kolm razed their capital and stole away all the High Kings daughters, but one escaped and eventually one of her kids led a band of hero’s and killed Darkstone. I swear on my axe that that kid was Darkstone’s own flesh and blood, and his descendants have had the High Kingship ever since.

Kolm Darkstone come back? Nah, he’s dead and gone. Legends are just that, laddie. Now hurry home to your Ma.

Classic Dark Lord on/in a mountain. Picked Mountains due to Prideful wanting to be the highest, and betrayal seems to a potential weakness as we could be blind to the dangers of disloyal servants.

Yeah I think the ruins would also be cool, don’t get me wrong, I just like the idea of our hero settling down in a “nice” place where his kids could live a relatively normal life, while also receiving training. Also if one of our kids is not up to “heroic standards”, they would be in a good position to work in/ run their own caravan or farm or something.

Moreover, I would rather not lock down on a role like magic researcher. Our bloodline already has a heroic determination and willpower, explicitly marrying for magical ability will create a lot of pressure on a nay kids to be good at magic, and competition to be the best. Descendants without magical ability, intentionally or not, may feel less valued. I would rather start with more open possibilities that let their natural abilities guide them onto a path that best suits them.

Overall, ruins are cool! I just love the idea of Jaurice doing his part in defeating the evil overlord and being able to raise the next generation with his sweetheart.

Spell Book, Beloved, Carlston Pass

Hey let’s give our boy Jaurice a chance of happiness here! Also it would be nice to have future heroes who have a taste of a normal life; else how do they appreciate what they are fighting for? It may not be optimized for magic, but it may develop more rounded.

I think Carlston Pass would be good between giving a safe place to raise a family and opportunities for adventure work. Ruins are creepy, and I’d give the pass a slight edge over harbor for the martial tradition.

Overall I think this combo puts us in a good place to develop a strong diverse heroic lineage, springing from a (hopefully) loving family in a place with a strong martial tradition.

Turn 4
(Final Challenge Round)

Now - finally - for pamphlets! The printing house cannot be terribly difficult to get to from here; I want to be printing pro-Chaos pamphlets ASAP! We shall have my converts aiding in production and distribution, with those who are most eloquent distributing at the locations of greatest traffic. They should also be going out now, to secure further conversion prior to the pamphlets being available (and they should have some of the stronger converts with them for protection).
I will be moving briskly to avoid further cheese-related head injuries, and see about acquiring an umbrella. Maybe one decorated with some silver chaos-related symbolism.

(5)
Jack and his followers quickly seize the printing press. It was an old thing, only used to slowly make sheets for the local church, but it is modified under the skilled hands of Jack’s followers to make pro chaos propaganda. The next CHEESEFALL, (ominous voice included), was greeted with cheers as Jack jumped out of the way. One convert hesitantly gave Jack an umbrella hat that he was inspired to make. The few printing press workers are quickly converted. Jack sends out advance teams to prepare and spread the word.  (+3 converts)
(1)
Unfortunately they are unable to find much of anyone, and get too distracted debating theology among themselves to do any serious recruiting. The pamphlets printed sit undistributed. (+2 converts).

Whisper the secrets of CHOAS into the town's minds. Let them go mad and kill for the dark gods(that are us)
The true secrets of choas can be a terrible thing to bare. Some go mad and run through the streets, attacking anyone the run across. Others barricade themselves inside their home.

I have picked the best path, THE PATH OF VIOLENCE!
Have all of my converts take up arms and aid me in treating people with death so they join my cause, then see if I can use my followers at one with nature thing to get some animals to join me as well.
(1)
The Prophet of King Zultan storms the town his followers, running through the streets proclaiming the strength of chaos. However, the streets and town is nearly empty and they find no one. The followers of the two prophets brawl in the streets, each championing their prophet. (+6 converts)
(1)
The few followers that the Prophet of King Zultan sent into the woods somehow “merged” with the trees.

The gods have noticed! But we are too few in number...

Spoiler: We need more (click to show/hide)
(2 Holy shit these rolls are bad)
The Prophet of Rahx speeds his chariot home, tearing up dirt on his path. With a flash of light and loud caw, a loud rooster appears next to him, and is quickly left behind by the chariot. Distant calls to praise chaos follow behind him. He reaches the outskirts of the village and has time to convince a few old fishmongers to join him. (+4 converts).

CONVERT RANKINGS
Glass: 44
King Zultan: 48
Rahx: 6

A loud gong resounds and ripples through the village, sending up a cloud of dust and debris.

A voice from the skies, “The Prophet of Zultan has proven himself worthy! Choose a Boon for yourself, and the Gods of Chaos will vote for another boon to grant you!”

The Prophet of Rahx was raised into the sky, “You have done well, but your service has ended.”

There was a crack in the air; and to mortal eyes the prophet simply disappeared. Minutes passed with no further words, the crowds began to shift anxiously and quiet murmuring broke out.

The Prophet accelerated faster and faster until his insides were liquified and only held together by chaotic power, directly into the moon. As he collided with its rocky surface, his body was transformed into pure energy.

From the ground the world gasped as the moon shattered in half. Thousands of fragments spread across the sky.

Chaos had come.

Send visions with orders to join Rahx in crusade against civilization  to shamans and leaders of wild northern chaos worshipping barbarian tribes

Across hundreds of tribes in the north, memories resurface. Ancient promises, of glory and conquest with the breaking of the moon. Of a prophet who would appear to lead them.
And the moon was broken, and the horns sounded as the barbarians marched to war.

King Zultan won this challenge, and can pick a boon to recieve. The Chaos gods will also choose a blessing to give the prophet (if no clear winner will be chosen randomly from options).

Rahx, good run! will be added to top of waitlist. Other prophets may also apply and join next turn.

Prophets may consider this a free round before next challenge.

Turn 3
(Turn 2 of competition)

Jack shoots a glare at Zultan, then gathers his flock.
Off to the church, to persuade those remaining there of our greatness and virtue, and why the way of these so-called “chaos” gods truly is the best for all - freedom and equality for everyone, working for the best of themselves and others, none pushing down on others, rather raising ourselves together!
Of course, make use of my new sight - use their desires, and show them what they could be, and prove to them that our way can bring them to their greatest potential!

(4)
Jack strides through the church doors  with his followers in tow. The churchgoers turn to you with a gasp. You see the fear and the hidden desire for something greater, what they could become. The young priest tries to get their attention back to their prayers, but he has totally lost their attention.

You tell them instead of freedom and equality, of realizing their true purpose. Seeing their desires and their potentials allow you to craft truly potent arguements. However, their fear and tradition holds the majority of them firm.

”bless” random prophet Jack the prophet with “the cheesefall”; at random intervals a complete wheel of cheese will manifest roughly 10 feet above the chosen prophets and land on their head

A voice booms through the church, full of dread purpose and ancient power.
“CHEESEFALL” it proclaims, and a whole wheel of cheese falls down on Jack’s head.

Seeing food miraculously appear grabs their attention, and Jack is quick to promise that those who follow Chaos will never go hungry again. This seals the deal for the rest of the crowd.
(+26 converts)

Meld 20 sacrificed people  with power of chaos into magnificent chariot, mouths of sacrificed people constantly yell to bow before Rahx the voice of chaos, scream sanity shattering truths, utter curse spells at unfaithful or spit rainbow flames

Gift it to Rahx

First sacrifice, nothing, not a word. No, not enough perhaps. More must be offered, maybe in a different way.

Nameless, still. No title other than prophet. If I cannot gain favor of chaos by sacrifices of the foolish, then lets find some... people to convince.

Maybe this will serve as a greater sacrifice.

The Prophet of Rahx boards his chariot and rides into the woods. The chariot, a hideous amalgamation of flesh, screams hideous truths as spinning legs churn the ground, sending it flying through the woods.
(3)
You don’t find much of anybody, much less a bandit camp, aside from a pair of hunters who you terrify into submission. (+2 converts)

Go to the keep and demand everyone there to bow before my god, then laser some furniture to show I'm serious about the face melting, and if they don't bow down they get their faces lasered off.

(6)
The Prophet of King Zultan bursts the door to the keep open, revealing babbling villagers and the lord of the village hastily putting on armor. A laser from his eyes burns through the table in the center of the hall, sending in collapsing in the middle, sending a dozen dishes to the ground.
“Kneel before Chaos!” The Prophet thundered.
They knelt.
(+36 converts).

CONVERT RANKINGS
Glass: 39
King Zultan: 42
Rahx: 2

Grant the largest prophet’s followers the ability to be one with nature.  As for the smallest prophet’s followers, make nature one with them.
(2)
King Zultan’s converts suddenly start to turn green and feel an inner peace, while Rahx’s two followers erupt into a two shambling masses of vines and flowers. (Still count!)

Let the First Boon of Imic be presented to the Prophet who’s roll is lowest this turn, or if it’s a tie, let the boon go to the Prophet who goes last. The boon shall do the following: Whoever has it shall become innately skilled at diplomacy, at calming the furious, at placating the greedy, reasoning with the naysayer, and working your way out of trouble.

The Prophet of Rahx, surrounded by two shambling horrors and a chariot fully formed by the bodies of 20 victims that also shouts terrible truths and blasphemies, feels that he is now more diplomatic.

They’re an implicit part of the game and they represent the whims of the chaos gods.
I follow explicit rules, not implicit ones, surely not when told to be a chaos god! A better boon, then;

To whoever rejects the boundaries of this exercise, grant the boon of Disobedience, such that failing the task does not result in death.

“OVERRULED!” the Great Chubby Teddy Bear roars. A million Ewoks nestled in his fur yub-yub excitedly. “The Prophets carry out our Will! They are but slaves to our demands! They shall compete to earn the title of Highest and Holiest Prophet, and so the loser must make way for others to try their hand! The Wheel spins until it is Broken!” The god mashes his teeth, grinding a hundred souls to nothing.

“Though I think I will take the explosion idea...”

By the way, I’d like to check: how will our abilities actually work? Like, does being able to see how to manipulate people give me a bonus to such rolls? Is it auto-4s or something? Are they just more action possibilities? Etc.

It's more increasing the effect of your rolls, so successes are greater and failures are more mitigated. It also increases your action possibilites.

Turn 2
(1st round of contest)

Quote
C2M’s Blessings:
(5)Jack’s mechanical eye gains the ability to see a persons inner desires and how best to manipulate them.
(4) A Ritual Knife for the Prophet of Rahx, scored with eldrich markings that it would cause sacrifices to bring more favor. It glows a terrible red.
(5) A Tyrant’s Crown. A gold crown with shards of obsidian. Those who fear you are more likely to obey you.
(Dang you got some good rolls here! I figured I would give my own blessings here to get you started, you won’t be getting these from me every turn :P)

The crowd stares with wide eyes as an old priest stumbles to the fore.
“Beware these villains, for they come to claim your souls!”

As a Voice of Chaos give...

Glass or rather the Jack the Prophet a mutation, that mutation being that he can alter his physiological self and disguise himself to look like another person however he can only shape-shift to look like the females of other humanoid species, he can choose if these disguises have the mechanical eye.
Before Jack can step forward, a purple beam from the heavens slams into him. (1) He can feel his flesh mutate slightly. You now know that you have the power to transform into a woman one time in agonizing slowness. Your eye also begins to feed you information as it whirls into motion.

As I believe I stated, I want to go get some pamphlets written and distributed on the why anarchy and what is known to the populace as “Chaos” is, in fact, preferable to the rule of kings and clergy. Stress the freedom and equality, the implicit goodness of all races that is corrupted by power, etc. (Based on questions, not time for this right now. I can pursue this next turn and use the topics in the debate.)

If there is not time to do this, then as soon as the old priest starts trying to declaim against us, challenge him to a debate, where we shall argue the validity of our causes in a rational manner. Of course, if his gods and ways truly are the better, then he should have no troubles convincing the populace of this, yes? (At least, that’s how I’ll frame the challenge... ;))

(Additional note: making me as convincing as my literally silver tongue would imply would be rather nice. C2 was less than helpful with that.)

Jack shakes his head clear and challenges the priest to a debate. (5) The old man is no match for you as you talk rings around him as he screams platitudes at you. The crowd is starting to get on your side. These prophets obviously have power, they think, maybe we should listen to them.

The priest is questioning my god, I must act quickly and LASER his face off, and the face of anyone else important looking, then tell the populace that if they don't bow down to my god I'll LASER their faces as well.

The Prophet of King Zultan has received his crown, glimmering on his head with an ancient malice. He notices the debate and is annoyed by the preacher screaming at his fellow prophet. (4) Laser beams shoot from your eyes and burn thru the preachers skull, dropping him to the ground.

(1) Jack panics, and flinches right into the path of the laser beams. Instead of burning him, they arc harmlessly around him. Those already convinced by his words drop to the ground before him for protection. (+13 converts. ) (Prophets may currently not harm each other or their converts.)

The rest scatter and flee, screaming at the sight of the old priest being killed before their eyes. The Prophet of King Zultan laughs before demanding they bow down before him or they will be lasered. (3) A few drop to their knees before you in panic, (+6 converts) but the rest of the 40 odd crowd flees into the streets, some heading for the small church and the rest heading towards the keep (about 20 to each).

Grab or make a ritual knife, and begin gathering the least critical people out to a river (anyone that wont be missed), for a practice concert lets say. Sing to them, either as a group or individually.

Perhaps, though the successful process, the prophet may get a name for himself. The chaos gods are fickle after all.

The Prophet of Rahx finds a knife in a market stall. His eyes were drawn to it, and it’s eldrich symbols swam before his eyes, demanding to be picked up and used. (6 oh damn) Without using your words you guide a terrified group of around 20 people to the edge of the river that feeds into the lake. There you sing them into slumber, and you ritually sacrifice them.

So anyone posting can do random chaos stuff ?

Gift Rax silver staff of warpfire - it shoots eerie stream of rainbow coloured flame

With the sound of horses beating and the rumble of a chariot, a flash of a chaos God appears before you and deposits into your hands a most Terrible Staff. It is known as the Mutating Staff, but you can give it a different name.

The Silver Staff glows, as if lit by an ever color shifting flame. You grasp it and know that it possess power to mutate creatures and people into monsters. You point it and shoot out warp fire, and whoever it touches mutates and falls under your control. You can add or mutate one trait (Super strong, fast, armored skin are examples).

The sacrificed bodies’ eyes snap open with a baleful fire that matched that of the chariot.

(With Sacrifices and offerings, generally the god it was offered to can do something with what was given. In this case, I had Sprinkled Chariot usurp the offering to me and combined Rahx’s wish and Chariots staff.

So now, Chariot can do something with the 20 bodies, such turn them into zombies or perhaps giant monster. This is not creating another character to follow, think of it as creating something and giving it a general directive, and then I’ll control it from there. )

Rahx’s mutated monsters in the future will count as followers, however his 20 sacrifices do not since they are now Chariots creatures.

Turn 1

Lightning strikes the ground, three times in a rapid staccato. The market place stops and stares, shrieks splitting the air as a few faint in shock. The sky is bright blue, with nary a cloud in the sky. An old priest blanches. He knows the old stories that were told to him as a child, that such things were a sign of Chaos’ return.

Slowly the haze lifts from the ground the lightening struck.

Nope no problem at all! Even if he dies in this game you can continually resurrect your favorite prophets.
I like the mutation idea as well.
Alright, thanks!

Jack had always been a revolutionary and an anarchist.

Not of the bomb-throwing variety, mind you, but of the intellectual bent. He'd already gotten one (fairly controversial) book published extolling the virtues of a society without kings, where all men are equal and rules are unnecessary to the common good.

He looked the sort, as well. Clean-shaven, pale in skin, maybe a bit on the short side - though, as an elf, that still put him at a few inches above the average human - and with a quill pen perpetually perched over his right ear. His left eye had been replaced with a mechanical replica, a memento of his younger years when he fancied himself a duelist; his chest bore a scar from a similar incident. The one thing about him that immediately and obviously set him apart from others was his silvered hair, which he had been born with.

Overall, he supposed it not unusual that the gods - or beings, or entities, or maybe simply aspects - of Chaos had chosen to approach him as their prophet.

They told him to recruit others to their cause. And they asked him what gift he may desire to this end.

His tongue was plated in silver, his fingers shone the same. His words flowed like fire and gold in speech and in print. Whoever could not be convinced to join him?

It was time to write some pamphlets.

Jack was revealed first. (2) His tongue and fingers were apparently dipped in silver paint that couldn’t be rubbed off. The crowd couldn’t look away however. His mechanical eye was also a hit with the crowd

Gonna nick one prophet and give them a hypnotic voice. Lets get a party going.

Just to be clear: convert people through the hypnotic voice.
The next revealed was the prophet of Rahx. He appeared perfectly normal, but his voice (1) literally puts people to sleep due to its incredibly hypnotizing nature.

I'd like to be a profit with Laser eyes mutation, so I can conquer the village with violence in the name of my god.
The last prophet of King Zultan stood, his eyes (4) blazing red. They can shoot laser beams that can burn thru flesh in seconds, however metal and heavier materials can slow it’s cutting.

A crowd of about 53 stand before you, there are 147 people in the town able to be converted.
You have three rounds to gather the most worshipers of Chaos. The winner will recieve “gifts”, the loser will be eliminated (if there is no one on the waitlist you will be immediately resurrected though)

Glass’s prophet: 0/147
Rahx’s prophet: 0/147
King Zultan’s prophet: 0/147

You can ask me or any other player gods for a boon, artifact, or for divine intervention. I will often require some sort of sacrifice though. Others may be less demanding.
