General Discussion / Re: AmeriPol thread
« on: June 14, 2018, 01:40:23 pm »
I'm a Democrat but I identify as a conservative.
I, too, am Trans-party. Do you think we can get into the Pride Parade?  :P

There's a large minority of democrats who are left leaning on some issues, right on others.  I believe its known as the centrist wing of the party.  My mom is "left on social issues, right on economics" and my dad is an old economic values Republican who's become disconnected from the party.  I think there's a lot of people like you, but many are either independents or non-voting Republicans and thus don't get much representation outside swing states.
I'm actually a Conservative of the old, Teddy Roosevelt type. I'm not particularly concerned about the moral or ethical implications of Climate Change as I am about the threat it poses to Human life and more importantly the resources it might destroy that could be better used by future generations.

Modern Republicans, though, are literal Morganites. "Ethics of Greed" indeed; they either don't care about robbing the future generations or straight up don't believe that the resources are finite, and it's biting everyone in the ass and they don't /care/. The big issue is that the Reps have support from the religious crowd, which is almost entirely supported by their Anti-Abortion stance. A Democrat who was willing to take the Pro-Life platform would probably pull the rug right out from underneath the Reps, although possibly at too high a cost in support from their own base.

Still, preservation of the species/environment > Women's rights, at least for me right now. I'm personally in favor of Abortion being legal before a certain point, but it's hardly the most important thing to me.
I know it's a small thing in the context of your larger post, but the threat to human life and destruction of resources are ethical ramifications of climate change. I think ethics gets a bad rap as 'those things that aren't practical considerations,' but it's really just about how to determine the correct course of action.

Dealing with a personal issue today/yesterday. I'm hoping I'll be able to update tomorrow.

within the Democratic Party.
reins of government
There's the difference. Third parties want to establish novel parties. The DSA wants to reform the democratic party. Of course both promote candidates for government positions.

Think tea party, but with socialism. And probably more tea. The tea party was never a third party.

All I'm saying is, give me an option. Give me any option that's more likely to bring the country to a better place than the Democrats, and I'll vote for them. Hell, I'll volunteer for them.
I'm glad you asked. (Note the membership explosion)

So get out there and primary some sentient statues of liver cancer.
I mean, I'm down with that, and if they can keep up the momentum from PA and keep their membership ballooning, that might eventually be a feasible option. But where I am right now, identifying with the DSA is going to mean voting D.

Quote from: Michael Harrington
The Democratic Socialists envision a humane social order based on popular control of resources and production, economic planning...and racial equality.

I mean, you're gonna get the hackles of people on the right up, but it seems that even the most tepid progressive policies do that, so I'm down for going full socialist.

The sun, high in the sky, was slowly making it's way to the horizon as Ograds forced his way through the underbrush to the north. The foliage got denser with every step northward, and just when he might have been forced to turn aside, or even go back, he found himself in a trail, seemingly beat down by animals walking the same path repeatedly. This trail led to a fresh spring, likely frequented by all manner of wildlife. Any fauna that Ograds might have found, though, were promptly sacred off by the roar of a giant beast to the south east.

In the meantime, Eou rallied a few of his fellow orcs to beat a path to the east. A determined search for a source of water yielded nothing, other than some fleshy red fruits. Provided they were safe to eat, they seem to have enough water contained within that they could hold the orcs over if no other water source was discovered. Before any of the orcs in the party could inspect the fruit carefully, however, a massive roar was heard to the north.

As his fellows left Falerion sat on the ground and began to draw runes in the sand [2 Successes vs 1 Difficulty]. He reflected that it was fortunate they arrived on a beach. Sand was a forgiving medium, easily manipulated, quickly swept away if things started to go poorly. And, with this medium, warmth was the perfect rune to search for. As he got closer, the sand he was moving heated, reaching a maximum as he approximated the true rune of warmth as closely as one can in sand. The result was a reservoir of heat emanating from the rune in the sand, with the lines themselves almost approaching the heat of bare coals. The issue would be heating something with that warmth without disrupting the fragile drawings.

So dense is the forest that Afnar could not see the bear (5/1/1, +1 defense hide, +1 attack claws) until he had nearly stepped on it. At that point there was no chance to escape notice by the bear, a hulking creature that was apparently quite easily aggravated. Fortunately, Gunnel was only a few feet away, his own spear at the ready, and Da had nearly caught up by that point.

I'd like to be put on the waitlist.
Gotcha!

Since it is explicitly stated that more discovered classes will be available for future players, am I right in inferring that I needn't make a character sheet to get on the waitlist?
Waitlist me too. I like the sound of this.
Waitlist updated, and I've got the turn thus far written up.

Yup! Had that written somewhere but apparently deleted it. I'll get that fixed momentarily.

The president could be subpoenaed, but not indicted. They are, as far as the DOJ is concerned, barred from being prosecuted. Any evidence of a crime by a sitting president would have to be referred to congress.

The weird thing about the preemptive pardon you're talking about is it can only be done after commission of the crime. So you can't pardon a crime that hasn't happened yet. So for him to preemptively pardon, he has to acknowledge awareness of criminal activity prior to any legal action is taken on the subject. Pretty bad look for him, and would likely lead to impeachment.

Saber, you're on the waitlist. We're going with scenario 2, modest fatality rate. Lets see how this goes!

Twenty of you were asked to stand in a large circle consisting of interlocking runes. Already instead were four chests, hopefully loaded up with sufficient supplies. Probably not. You weren't chosen from among the cream of the crop. Those chosen for shaman to experiment with were often considered expendable.

One of the five shaman standing in around the circle spoke up. "You have been chosen to lead a new expedition. We believe we can send you beyond the Bluespire Mountains. We have already sent scouts the long way around. When you arrive you are to wait among the foothills until the scouts find you. That should be simple enough even you mush for brains can understand it."

From somewhere in the middle of the of the pack a voice asked. "But why do you need twenty of us? Couldn't one do that?"

The shaman pushed his glasses up. "There exists another outstanding question on the rate of combustion during transport, and twenty was considered a sufficient number to estimate the rate of that phenomenon. Good luck."

With that the circle glowed red, the shaman took on a hazy appearance, and you could taste fire in your mouth. In an instant, though, the world snapped back into place. You stood on a beach, certainly unlike anything near the Bluespire Mountains. But nobody was on fire, so at least the shaman was wrong about everything.

In the chests you find 5 hides, enough food to feed the group for 5 days, 4 spears (+1 attack die), and 6 knives (no combat benefit). Not exactly a wealth of equipment, but it'll do you for a while. Except the complete lack of water.

It's legally untested, and arguably terrifying. In practice, it would come down to either an emergency Supreme Court decision, or Congress. Probably Congress, but I'd put the odds of getting a Decision at at least one in three.

In any case, it's dangerous ground. If he was impeached, the precedent would be set that its illegal. If he's not... well, Trump pardoning himself is one of the very few things I live in legitimate fear of. There'd be violence on the streets, and hell, I'd probably be one of them. And I'm virtually an establishment shill, so that's terrifying.
Pardoning himself of what though? I think this whole conversation is pretty nebulous, because he probably can't be charged. The was it's set up right now, it all comes down to the impeachment process.

Ah ok, so it's just him saying 'oh I'll just pardon myself if you do find something illegal I did'.  Still concerning, but just more trump.   I was thinking if that was something he could do Bill Clinton, Nixon, and Johnson would have done it first.
It's even less interesting than that. It's not even clear if legally he could be indicted with anything. Presidents are usually approached as uncharged co-conspirators, and then it's left to the impeachment process. I think the DOJ stance has for a long time been that he can't be indicted, so saying he can pardon himself is kinda silly. Almost as silly as when he said he'd pardon Mohammad Ali. Who was found innocent.

Alright, we're at four of six, and scenario 2 is definitely the winner. I'll write it up tonight and if we don't get any more interest before tomorrow we'll just start with four players.

(btw what do my traits actually do?)
We really need an answer to this question.

Updated the OP to reflect both you character, and made it a little more aesthetically appealing.

Name: Gunnel Stendoff
MAD: 3/1/1
Race: Orc
Class: Hunter
Abilities: Ability

Scenario 2/3.
You docked yourself some arcane and diplomatic abilities. I restored them, unless you actually want them lower. Also put hunting instead of ability.

You are, whether by design or chance, the first orc colonists in a new land. Largely without aid, you will have to build society from the ground up, finding resources and recreating technologies. In the process, you will redefine what it means to be an orc. Are you up to the task?

Let me know if anything is unclear. I'm going to gradually reformat the post to make it more aesthetically appealing, and add more background once a starting scenario is chosen. A poorly drawn map may also be added, depending on enthusiasm.
