DF Gameplay Questions / Criminal Migrant?
« on: March 08, 2020, 11:21:20 am »
I got a migrant who has a profession of "criminal". Is it worth keeping this guy? He hasn't seemed to have done anything yet. On the other hand, I am very suspicious of him. I made him bookkeeper since he's a fisherdwarf by default and I don't have a bookkeeper yet.

DF Gameplay Questions / Issue collecting clay?
« on: February 23, 2020, 10:34:23 am »
I have two potters/glazers who ONLY have those labors enabled, and they sit there with no job instead of collecting clay when it comes up. What labor enables them to collect clay? I don't use burrows, so that isn't the problem. Is clay considered stone, so they need stone hauling enabled? I have never had this issue before.

DF Gameplay Questions / Crafting Questions
« on: November 23, 2019, 01:41:07 pm »
Been awhile since I've played DF and I have a couple of random questions.

1.) Does the quality of a quern matter? I have 2 artifacts that are querns, one of which sells for 80K because my craft dwarf used like 4 gold bars to decorate it, and I'm currently wondering if it's worth just selling that.
2.) Is the quality of ash glaze based at all on the quality of the ash, or is it just from the glazing skill?
3.) Is there some way to get my library scholars, who have no labors enabled, to actually write a book/scroll/whatever? Or is it completely random. All my scholars seem to do is contemplate X.
4.) Is there some way to ensure that at least 10 bags are only used for sand, and nothing else, without mods?

As far as i'm aware I have all the materials any moody dwarf could ask for, but this one can't seem to find the hundreds of different bones in my stockpile when my crafters have been using tons of them to decorate stuff with no issues. I don't have any workshops designated to only take from certain stockpiles, none of the bones in the stockpile are forbidden, and no other dwarves have issues taking from there. Why can't he take the bones? I know artifacts are made in order, and that bones are the problem, but he's the only one that seems to have a problem with the bones on offer. I even have some unicorn bones, what's wrong with him?

This dwarf took a forge and wants:
Blocks (which is the only item he's got so far)
"Bones... yes", which is obviously bones, and where he seems to be stuck
Leather
rocks
metal bars,
more rocks,
more bones

DF Gameplay Questions / Mercenary equipment issues?
« on: May 25, 2018, 06:42:59 pm »
I get Mercenaries coming to my fort for "soldering" purposes. However, they refuse to wear any armor. I have 5 large armor sets for my humans, I went through all the trouble of going through the "details" menu for their armor pieces so that the armor would fit humans, and after all the trouble, they don't even have the manners to actually use them. It even affects the one dwarven Mercenary I have. All the dwarves who are full citizens are wearing full armor, but all the Mercenaries just have a shield and weapon, even as the weapon/armor/ammo/trap stockpile has armor to spare.

What gives? I've only had this problem since the last update, did they change how we're suppose to do this or something?

DF Gameplay Questions / Random Questions since I just updated DF.
« on: April 28, 2018, 11:29:21 am »
1.) Can you force a dwarf out of a hospital? I have a good swordsdwarf in the hospital for a fractured hand, but my map has no water of any description, I haven't found the cavern layer, and I'd like for him to live.

2.) A lot of my random animals seem to be distracted (have a yellow down arrow). Can I fix this beyond making a temple in their pastures, or am I just going to have to tolerate them having the yellow arrow.

3.) What's going on with artifacts now. Everytime an artifact is created, the dwarf who creates it claims it as a heirloom in the name of some long forgotten relative ancestor. Can I still put the artifact weapon racks in the king's room without my legendary mason getting upset?

4.) Can I stop DF from moving my screen everytime the game pauses because I got a moody dwarf, migrant wave, etc? It's annoying to be doing something, and then my screen is about 10 Z levels above where I was.

DF Gameplay Questions / Monster Slayer Question?
« on: April 14, 2018, 12:53:30 pm »
So I saw that one of my new migrants was of the "monster slayer" profession, and I'd like to know more about this because the wiki has very little information. Aside from being listed as a competent speardwarf there seems to be nothing unusual about him. I looked this up on the wiki, and it only talks about monster slayers being visitors to your fort. Can monster slayers just be ordinary citizens by default, or is this some sort of bug? He doesn't seem to have any unusual behavior for a citizen. I assigned him to my military and he just spends all his time hanging out in the barracks training, like any other military guy.

Any other information about monster slayers?

DF Gameplay Questions / Does the size of Goblin Armies matter?
« on: January 27, 2018, 02:51:18 pm »
This is my first long term fort, because usually I make a fort and go "I could build this better" and start a new fort within about 3 years, so I've never really stuck around long enough to encounter any serious goblin threat.

So I have only one squad of 10 Dwarves, but they're all legendary in pretty much every skill that matters, and have mostly bronze armor with some imported steel weapons, shields, and helms sprinkled in (I'm currently candy hunting, but it's slow going). I then got a goblin "invasion". This invasion had about 50 goblins who were very quickly murdered by my squad with no help from traps or anything and no injuries or casualties on my side. My squad just murdered them and went back to training. At what point should I be concerned about goblin numbers? I would think that at some point they could overwhelm my squad of dorfs, but that hasn't been the case so far.

If I get Adamantine weapons and don't wake up the circus will I be fairly OK from Goblin invasions?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Awesome, WTF, and Funny DF Moments?
« on: January 23, 2018, 07:22:11 pm »
Anyone have any any funny/awesome/WTF moments they want to share? I'll start.

  • So I just had a minotaur at my fort. He spawned next to a river where 2-3 fisherdwarves were fishing. The first fisherdwarf with no combat skills of any description broke the neck of the minotaur with one attack. He did suffer a broken knee, so he went to the hospital, got a crutch/splint/whatever, and then went back to catching mollusks, without even seeing the bone doctor. I like to imagine that my dwarf went "Pfff, puny cow interrupting me fishing...."
  • A bronze colossus showed up at my fort. He died to a dwarf with a steel spear. He attempted to attack my militia with a bronze statue, that he got from god knows where. My fort doesn't have any bronze statues (well, I guess we now have one...)Where did he get that? Why was he just carrying it around? It's literally just a statue of a random Kobold.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / No Trade Caravan?
« on: December 19, 2017, 03:24:58 pm »
I got an announcement for a trade caravan, but aside from the diplomat, no caravan is forthcoming. There are no units in the "others" screen aside from the diplomat and 2 emus. There haven't been any enemies on my map for a long time anyway because my military is pretty good and has steel armor.

Any ideas as to what happened here?

DF Gameplay Questions / Help with vampire identification?
« on: December 18, 2017, 12:33:16 pm »
I just got a wave of only 10 migrants and believe that 1 is a vampire, as my miner has been drained of blood. Obviously this loss of dwarven life and production loss must be answered for. My questions are as follows....
  • Can babies be vampires? If not this eliminates 2 suspects.
  • If vampires don't sleep, does that mean they never go into their rooms? If so that eliminates a few more
  • One dwarf claims to be 19 but has been a resident of no less than 6 forts. In my eyes this would make him a prime suspect, however his skill values are poor for one of his age. Am I overly paranoid about this military brat or is he still a suspect?

12
I have a Human axeman who is otherwise happy except for the fact that he refuses to sleep in his (very nice) quarters. He is listed as having quarters in the "v" screen, along with a bunch of furniture, but he still refuses to sleep there and I'm not sure he's ever even been in his bedroom. The rest of his squad has no problems sleeping in their own bedrooms as their barracks is designated for training only, and not for sleeping. Do I need to make him a large bed or something? If so how do I do that? No one else around his quarters has issues getting into their rooms either.

I've noticed this problem sometimes with Dwarves who have the 'hunting' skill enabled, but usually I just disable hunting anyway because it's one of the less useful and more dangerous professions in DF, so I've never had a real problem with this before now.

13
I have a fortress that I haven't been to in awhile, and I wanted to commission about 20 statues of fortress history, but I've forgotten what the name of my Fortress actually is and don't know how to look it up. Any suggestions?

DF General Discussion / Random thoughts about DF thread
« on: April 20, 2017, 02:35:21 pm »
This thread is for dumb questions, observations, and thoughts that have no effect on gameplay, but you wonder about them anyway. The paradoxes of the Dwarf Fortress universe, if you will. I'll start.

  • If lakes, Oceans, and rivers freeze in winter, and anything in them becomes encased in ice and dies, why aren't fish endangered?
  • When a dwarf in a mood makes a jade bed, does he magically grow the gem and then cut it into a full bed, or is the bed really tiny and the dwarf that sleeps in it just pretends it's full size?
  • Vampires can't drink alcohol, yet they still get alcohol withdrawal.

DF Gameplay Questions / Humans won't equip armor?
« on: April 16, 2017, 12:32:46 pm »
I had a bunch of mercenaries petition to stay in the fortress for soldiering, but they refuse to wear any armor I make for them. Notably, this only applies to the humans who have joined my fort, the dwarven mercenaries wear their armor just fine. Everyone does have shields equipped, but in the event we actually get a real threat on the map sending in people with steel weapons and shields only isn't a good idea.

Do I have to do something to make them equip armor? Everyone has access to armor and my smiths and the other soldiers have no issues going to the armor/weapon stockpiles.
