DF Gameplay Questions / Find dwarf by his true name

In this version you've got visitors and guests. You have no control over their comings and goings.

I cannot go through all the visitors coming and going and be bothered to find a vampire. I really have better, more fun, and less impossible, things to do.

So, I know I can use DFhack to 'cursecheck detail' and get the name of the vampire.

Problem is, that name isn't on my list of civilians or visitors, in the 'u' menu. How then can I find the dwarf by his true name, if he is using an alias?

Can anyone tell me why my archers are won't fire their bolts at my prisoners?
and secondary, why where the water in the brook keeps spawning from?

they all have quivers. prisoners were released from cages via a lever. archers are defending burrow against carved fortifications on other side of released prisoners

through schedules - defend burrows
it has worked for years on the save, and then last season when I added beak dogs to the prisoners, it stopped working

DF Gameplay Questions / Clothemaker Failure

I am using the Meph tileset from http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?topic=161047.0
along with whatever mods he included in his launcher.

I cannot figure out why my clothesmakers will not make yarn clothes.
I have wool cloth
I have the workshop
I have the orders queued for yarn clothes
I have dwarves with the labor enabled who are sitting around with no job for hours
The workshop pathing is not blocked
The workshop is not restricted to particular dwarves

The job keeps getting canceled saying it need yarn cloth, but there is wool cloth in the stockpile right above it. more than 80 of it according to stocks report on highest settings.

I am having the same problem with bone bolts and skull totems.

I am going to have to retire my fort after working on it for weeks, because I cant get dwarves to make anything.
Is  my game bugged or is it user error?

DF Gameplay Questions / Unplayable - Deady Body * 60 * all my dwarves

This is my 4th attempt on this version. I've read everything I can.
It seems inevitable that the fort collapses due to everyone going into fits from witnessing dead bodies.

I execute an invasion perfectly. I tell all my citizens to go to burrows away from the miasma and dead bodies. I then tell my military to do nothing but haul corpses and clean...for what appears to be an amount of time that is equal to how long it takes for the next invasion! All the bodies have been hauled to walled zones outside the fort, but they keep accumulating.

Inevitably, my military breaks down
Then the untrained replace them
Then they break down.

I've got artifact statues, tables, chairs, legendary bedrooms and dining areas. Nothing matters.

I don't see how anyone can play this version with how spineless the dwarves are.

DF Gameplay Questions / How do I diagnose a crash?

I've been playing this fortress quite a bit and have gotten further than I ever have before. However, it has begun to crash at random intervals.

I figure it must not be due to settings, since I've gotten a good ten years of game play so far with the current settings.

How do I go about diagnosing the problem? I see there are several logs, but I don't see any error information in them. Where do I look? What can I try?

Are there any known ways to diagnose and possibly fix a save?
I'd really like to keep playing this fort!

DF Gameplay Questions / Remove construction from far end to near end

I wanted to mine out two z levels. Being noob, I mined out the lower one first. So to clear out the upper level, I built a stair and a floor that extended several tiles for access. I then mined out the upper level.

I now want to remove the floor. Seems dwarves are silly, so if I designate the whole thing to be deconstructed, they start at a random spot and trap themselves or fall and hurt themselves.

To solve this I manually designate one tile at a time, from the far end to the near end.
Is there a better way? That kind of micro is a little annoying.

DF Gameplay Questions / colored numbers

I've got a line at the bottom of my screen that says "H:0/0/0/7/0/0/0" what does each number mean?
I assume the seven is my dwarfs, since I so happen to have 7 of them and 2 nuerons to draw conclusions with. What are the others?

I also have a C and an H on the left side of my screen along the border in red and green. What are those?

I am noob

I read the wiki about some defensive designs. Their diagrams entail marksdwarfs individually being posted at specific tiles. How do I get them from the state where they are running around doing their everyday tasks, to each individually sitting at their post shooting badies?

DF Gameplay Questions / Suicidal dwarves doing jobs

My dwarves love to go and pick up equipment or put an item in a stockpile while there are 100 monsters coming down the hallway.

These are dwarves assigned to squads which have stations! They are not civ dwarves.
Why???!!!!!

How do I find the item they are after easily and forbid it?
Or is there a way to just forbid everything in an entire area?

DF Gameplay Questions / Titan won't attack me

This titan is just going back and forth in my hallway. What am I to do? He won't come down to my fortress and through my traps. He is just stuck going back and forth in the hall. I can't go up and melee him, he has webs and squished my dwarves in a few hits.

DF Gameplay Questions / Stocks

On the z->stocks screen it is quite often that forbidden items appear. Are all of these things dropped by monsters or is there another way they become forbidden? I am not making anything forbidden manually.

How do I see items that are _not_ worn by a dwarf? So, I can tally up how many armors i have to sell?

Also, how do I know where the item is and if it is safe for me to go get?
If I tab I get individual items and the z option is lit up. If I hit z on red items, it takes me to the tree canopy and a dead dwarf that isn't wearing or carrying that item at all.

Lastly, I don't see the point of the e: Enhanced view. I cant find a thing there, because it isn't categorized. What do people use that screen for?

DF Gameplay Questions / Stuck in Trees

This is getting really annoying. I've lost 5 legendary dwarves to being stuck in trees.
What else can I do besides never tell them to collect fruit using a stepladder?

Has the developer ever mentioned his ETA on fixing this?

DF Gameplay Questions / Game pauses and moves screen focus

Every few seconds the game is pausing and moving the screen focus to nowhere. I think it has something to do with the message "digging designation canceled: damp stone located.

There is water above me where I want to dig, but I am not digging upward. I am just trying to get a room below the water. As I understand it, there will be a ceiling, so the water isnt going to come down. In fact, I've forced the miner to keep digging one stone at a time and there is no water coming in.

So, why does it keep pausing and moving the screen? Can I get it to stop?

I have [AUTOSAVE:SEASONAL] in my d_init.txt, and the game pauses and saves every season, but in my D:\Games\Dwarf Fortress\Dwarf Fortress 0.43.05\data\save directory there is only "current" and "region1" directories. The seasonal save is nowhere to be found.

Where are my seasonal saves?

I am only 8 months in and a wereopossum attacked. I don't even have a wall yet. Not only that, but he spawned on the map right next to a farmer that for some reason was on the edge of the map. I have no idea what he was doing there.

Is it game over? I hear if your dwarves are bit by a were/whatever you are in big trouble.

EDIT:
He killed the farmer, so I guess I don't have to worry about him turning. It then killed 2 dogs and fled the map.
Do I need to do something special with the corpses? Burn them or something?
