DF General Discussion / Re: Aliens leaving circles in my grassland !?
« on: January 05, 2021, 12:53:16 pm »
What does checking with 'k' say? Is it tree droppings, sand, or some kind of weird blood/ooze?

If you look at the area around it, you can see its a different biome, there is a forested area at the bottom right of the map and everything else is mountain terrain. Pretty much rock with grass nothing grows there not trees or other vegetation, I embark close to mountains because I like that "grass backyard" look. When I look with K, its yellow sand, what I would get if I had trampled the grass that was there, but the thing is, I did not, and the fort is 50/50 surface/underground so I'm always on the lookout and nothing has happened there, no battles, no buildings, nothing at all, and since no tree has ever been there this whole affair is weirding me out, also the fact that some of my cattle has been going missing was what gave me the idea for the title of the post xD but I can attribute that to the different industrial traps I run and not to some paranormal happening, but this.. this is freaky.

DF General Discussion / Aliens leaving circles in my grassland !?
« on: January 04, 2021, 08:20:29 pm »
So I was going on about my day and I take a look at my surface when I notice strange circular areas on my grass, no I did not have any buildings there, the grass had a aesthetic purpose, no I did not build anything or have animals on it or any invasion trampled it, I wonder what would it be, aliens? divine signs? What do you think?

Indeed! ever since I had an incident where my floor roof collapsed due to my experiments of player-made earthquakes I have used walls for roofing. And side note this solves the projectile and body parts sinking through a Z-level if the battle happens above. Make your fort 2 Z-levels deep or roof with walls to avoid dwarves being freaked out about random gobo head in the dining room.

Tired of the endless trails of vomit and other contaminants in your outdoor areas?
Want to clean up that battlefield that makes the entrance your fortress look like a big red mess?

Worry no more I have found a solution! it does not include building floors on top of it to make it "inside" or building a road on the area (this are valid but tedious solutions)

First designate a wall to be built (you can suspend before its built, does not matter) and that is it, your Urist will clean a 3x3 around the tile where the wall is designated. Cannot confirm if this works with designating other constructions but you are welcome to test it and let me know! Works with latest version of DF.

It may have walked through forgotten beast extract left on the floor (then licked it off itself, urgh). Have you had any recently?

I see, maybe that explains it, one of them might have walked through the battle ground where my military dealt with the Mountain Titan that had deadly spittle, then liked the poisonous secretions (dang yikes, should have used soap :'p) and gotten necrosis. Thank you all for your replies ^^

Your kitten has probably gotten necrosis. It can happen from regular infection and it can be caused by syndromes. I suspect it has gotten into a fight at some time.

Only idea that pops in my head is the Mountain Titan with deadly spitle, but it was far far away from my animal pens and non of the dwarves involved got the infection.

I don't have an answer for you, I just wanted to post saying I think this is hilarious :P

Thanks I thought so too xD, but also morbid since it could have happened to dwarves q-q

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Why are my kittens rotting alive?!
« on: May 11, 2020, 04:43:02 pm »
So some context, my fort is not in a hunted biome, no necros, only happy dwarves and casual fun. I come across my tavern while inspecting moods and I see a large pool of miasma and immediately start looking for a rotting corpse, but only find my kittens, who I let hang around my tavern a food stockpile to keep vermin away. Unsuspectingly I continue to look for corpses and at this point I have no clue and its been 5 min and my dwarves are starting to complain a lot. Im going bananas until I watch the cloud dissipate and the tile where its emanating from. It's a kitten, it's alive yet most of his body is rotting away, anyone have any insights about this???

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: why is this child mad?
« on: May 10, 2020, 01:23:35 am »
1. He's suffering from serious cave adaptation and doesn't like having to go outside and vomit.
2. There was an unexpected death 2 years ago and it had a rather profound effect on his personality and beliefs, and he's still resentful from dwelling upon the experience.
3. He's separated from somebody, possibly his family.

Given that he's yelled/cried on somebody in charge six times over the past season alone, I'd say he's been very stressed for a long time and is likely in the process of recovering - he won't get better instantly (like he would have in the pre-stress versions of DF), but it should happen eventually.

woa thanks, Im not very experienced with the new stress system since I have just returned to df, thank you for time responding. I went ahead and rehabilitated him (meeting hall with awesome zoo, good meals and close to the tavern) did not respond too well at first but all of the sudden he went back to normal. Investigated again and it seems he used the experience as a lesson of some sort and his personality changed, as a result he no longer feels anything by watching someone die, perfect for militia captain!

He has the indicator that his stress level is high. However, when I go to investigate turns out he is having a good ol' time yet his stress level is still high. It's been like this for some time, any idea why?

What happened after the werebeast got out?

Well.. I don’t really know how it got out (unless it jumped the wall when it turned back into a dwarf)
And so I continued testing and I am almost sure it was because they needed specific ammo to train and for combat. What I mean is that in the military screen under the “f” menu (ammunition), you can set specific types of ammo for train/fight. If you don’t then they end up using all of it to train. I did have ammo but not enough to fill the ammo stockpiles on the towers and therefore they would get those and practice and then when they needed the ammo they could not leave their post to go grab some resulting in them not shooting. To fix this I limited the ammo used for practice to wood, now I’m ready for gobos.

PS special thanks to those who came in aid of a fellow player, and to those who came back to check :)

How are you getting them into the tower anyway? Station, kill, burrow defense? Tried the others?

Also is the werebeast in wereform right now? A naked human isn't shot on sight I think.

What you ordered them to equip is a bit irrelevant with dwarves having their own ideas, please look at some inventories that they really have quiver, bolt and xbow on their person if you haven't already.

I set a station order to the tower level while the creature is transformed, they do arive to their position but do not shoot, I didnt check their inventory but I will try next time. Also the werebeast scaped.

Silly question, but best to start from square one: the dwarves do have their weapons and ammo when they get to the towers, right?

Otherwise, I'm not sure either.  If I'm reading the maps right they should have clear shots at it, except maybe if it goes beneath one of the towers.

Yeah they do, I make sure to have all bones from butchery (except a couple in case of mood) made into bolts, all copper and some wood pluss trade from caravan. Also they have their uniforms set to "replace clothing" and their personal crossbows.

A while ago some werebeast entered the map and freaked me out because I had no defense against it so I did the usual burrow-->pull lever closing main bridge in entrance and waited it out. After I made an archer squad, trained them to skilled/professional marksdwarves and built them archery towers (shown in picture.) However when another werebeast came, and I trapped it in the courtyard they did not shot at it from the towers. I've given it a lot of thinking but I can't seem to undestand what is wrong. Pls help!

DF General Discussion / Re: So I've created a Wack-a-Goblin game

Suggestion: Add some access bridges near the initial bridge on the right to allow for easier Dorf access to the maze's contents.

I hear you, the problem is I have way too many levers, 180 to be exact; and they are all in a lever room which is also my dining room, I call it the "Base of Operations" but the game calls it the Baker of Bowels xD. I lay the levers in the same position as the structures I connect them to so I know what they are for.

Example:

https://plus.google.com/u/0/photos/photo/108012651219385969675/6432649022748878546?icm=false

levers are becoming less of an option this days, I think I'll be trying pressure plates soon. Thank you very much for the suggestion, keep'em coming ^^
