1 Someone will always drop an old sock on your artifact door when you turn on the civilian alert.
2 When you built an archer tower on surface and command your archers to move there, they will get there in no time. With wooden bolts. Outside of the tower.
3 You will flood your fortress by making down-stairs in your water tank.
4 Your carpenter will go for a log on the surface.
5 You will pull the lever and will trap yourself with a beast.

We already have lots of powerful creatures running from you know, while we don't see anyone on islands.
Maybe it's better to add a sea civilization with underwater towns and let them to attack surface, probably only a few big map cells from costline.
And when they die, they leave 7 water as a corpse (from their diving suit).

DF Suggestions / Building floodgates from the top

Now floodgates are pretty the same as bridges and doors in functionality. To make the difference and more reasons to use them I suggest to change them like this:
- floodgates can be constructed on a tile with no floor and no building on z-1 level;
- it's open after construction and looks like floor;
- after pulling the lever the floodgate closes and blocks z-1 level. On z level there's still just floor.
This will change everything.
