General Discussion / Re: Things that made you sad today thread.
« on: December 06, 2021, 08:14:37 pm »
I am no atheist. Atheism is a belief just like religion. You cannot prove that god exists, but you cannot prove that god does not exist either.
So I consider myself an agnost. I don't know. I put my faith in what we do know. Science.

I am an a - theist.
One who is without theism.
Theism is a belief in god/gods.
I am an atheist, someone who lacks belief in gods/god.

This doesn't mean that I can't think of gods/god as possible, only that faith isn't part of my calculation. As per my current understanding of science and the world, the possibility is vanishingly small. But with the right evidence (and it would need to convincingly explain a lot) I'd adjust my worldview.

Atheism does not seek 'to prove that god does not exist.' It doesn't actively push any agenda, really. It just kinda cuts faith out of the equation.

Agnostics believe that we can never prove/disprove the existence of god/gods. Though, granted, each agnostic seems to have a slightly different definition. It doesn't concern itself with what you put into the equation, it's only concerned with the end answer - whether there is or is not some form of divinity.

Edit: To attempt further clarification:
It's possible to be an Agnostic Christian - someone who believes in God, but doesn't think we can ever know one way or another whether he exists.

It is possible to be an Agnostic Atheist - someone who doesn't believe in god/gods, and also thinks we can never know whether they exist.

It is not possible to be an Atheistic Christian - someone who doesn't believe in God and believes in God.

((Some may prefer to replace 'Christian' with 'theist' in the above. I'm just playing to the crowd  ;) ))

EditEdit: Apparently this discussion moved over to the Railgun thread, so... oops?  :P
This is an excellent enumeration.

Ah! Thanks @Lord Shonus - that's the thing I was not conveying properly.... I need to revise my statement that it's not both "positions" I think need equal footing in a discourse, but the people on both sides that both need respect.

It's when people start treating the people on either side of a debate with contempt, rather than the ideas, that things start going awry.

"People deserve respect, ideas must earn it."

It's possible we could enhance or quicken the process by integrating chunks of whatever machine into ourself physically, although this would make it slower to change forms since we would have to divest the integrated machinery or convert it to "generic" body mass. Or use it to reinforce structural elements of a new form, or our "normal" form's legs/arms.

((Got the idea from Plan... C, I think, near the end of McCreary's Planet.))

[farming logistic woes]

I recently discovered the same stuff

Ezar Sokan, "The Solider of Phrases"... A Wombat bone Battle Axe. Wombat bone. Worth 28,080 at least, but right into the vault with that and I see no reason for it to ever come back out.

The reason is if you really really want someone killed with style.

Using a rifle against someone (Rosenbaum) who is attacking you with a bag of socks is not proportionate force

Yeah, there's hardly much else to do until the Glass reaches her destination.

[S1ilent] is correct about our priorities, and I'm sure the Herald (or the Perversion) can multitask answers to our questions during training.

I wonder if there are any ships in here that are in one piece we could use to escape if we wanted to.

... though I'd rather not figure out by experience what space-capable weaponry our mother has.

Ask about the strategic significance of this Empyreal weak point, its defense capabilities, history, and name.

Ask about any other known Plague creatures with multiple nexuses. Also what precisely is the 'energy' within it.

I'm guessing your two nexuses are linked to our existence as voices, or to the Blighted Glass's comment that you're the only one of her children capable of actual defiance. Can't ask the Herald about that though!

((I have some more questions and speculations but I'll write them up later))

yeah, wouldn't want to end up falling from the sky onto some backwards planet that's never heard of the Empyre. or something like that.

I considered Judaism, but I just didn't make the cut. Was too slow for Islam, they told me I had to go fast. Fancied giving Buddhism a spin, but realised I didn't desire it.

took me a minute or two
