I looked up DF about a week later, and downloaded it a week after that. I then spent thirty minutes trying to designate normal ground to be mined and thinking that the mountainside over there was some sort of ocean.

A friend of mine showed me it and it looked neat, then he plopped me into the game blind and made me learn it...

Haha, sounds like my conversion tactic  :).
I just deluge them with stories of Boatmurdered and necrobacon and the FAILCANNON (possibly my favorite DF contraption ever made) and the Hamlet of Tyranny and dwarven childcare.

This is actually a really good idea.
That idea is the dwarven equivalent of a nuclear reactor -- keep the core on the verge of a chain reaction but never actually let it get there.
And just like real-life nuclear reactors, something going wrong results in flying limbs and major infrastructure damage.
But we can control when the cadmium rods dear relatives are executed, for the most part. Keep them in a locked room with some quick way to kill them, and as long as the food and drink supplies are brought in, they should be fine. Even if something holds up the alimentary delivery system, it takes a while for dwarves to completely starve.

He just seems to lack an imagination. Definitely never played DnD.
It appears that he's never played NetHack either. Poor guy.
