What is the purpose of seizing goods, that is taking goods from a caravan for free?

Is there a a explanation to find for all menu options to assign weapons for a squad ?
I am battling now with this menu :
How to assign a weapon? : is it for the whole squad .. when i choose a different weapon option for both ( 2 ) squads
When i reopen the squad and checking he choosen weapons, then it shows not the initial choosen weapons?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dorfs restricted to safe fortress

They are sometimes going wandering the inhabitants outside the fortress.
Can i restrict the population of the fortress that they stay inside ( not by a burrow then ? )
Then i can do hunting (hunter with dogs ) or is it no problem that dorfs going outside their safe fortress?

Daed/missing 17dorfs , but don't have a clue what causes this..eerie

DF Gameplay Questions / Creating a well
« on: March 29, 2020, 07:17:11 am »- Afraid for water shortages ( dehydrated dorfs ) i try to build early a well
- Is this pool enough for filling a everlasting filled reservoir for a well
- Construction of downpipe to reservoir, crate ( floodgate not needed : the fortress can not be flooded by water ? )
The dorfs can also drink water with a bucket.
Should the watercompsumption sufficient by hauling water ? ( my guess is that is the case)
Inside the fortress is a well safer
Only nearest watersource is outside a pool of 16 x 12= 192 cubic meter water

In a workshop i do see noted a 0 ..also the 0 is placed behind a order.
What could that be?

How to start a mission: for example one squad (with one squad member for now): from where is the mission started in or out fortress ?
What to see if a squad is going on mission ( following is that possible ?)
I understood that once a squad is sent to a raid, there is no tracking of the squad on the worldmap.?
Are there coming announcements to aspect ?
Only now the distance off the to be raided spot is known.

Were these items (masterpieces) made by legendary skilled dwarfs ?
What is the benefit to have masterpiece made item quality.?
I think there about 18 legendary skilled dwarfs with this status and 67 losers
-(according to DF therapist)
Interesting to know what is the distribution of the legendary dwarfs
All squadmembers are legendary , but not in martial art ?
Why became they legendary ?

DF Gameplay Questions / Need of iron ore

In the status screen: STONE , this screen lists all economic stones found within the game ( IN GENERAL OR IN MY GAME? )
I looked at goblinite ore, but is not listed here ?
So its not clear what the purpose of this screen is
I try to find some iron ore ( hematite, magnetite , limonite ) , but there is a soil layer and further deeper granite , gabbo and more to rock to at least - lv 44
How deep are the iron ores be found ? .. in sedimentary layer..
Note: did not pay attention to this during embark setup for finding iron
ores ( what was my initial embark setup ? )

I read here: it would be nice if you had some armor and weapons lying around , either smelted yourself or traded for
Even wooden training weapons will do for learning the basics of the military system
Could be the most complex subject in Dwarf Fortress is th emilitary system ?
Ok, smelted yourself .. no experience with this ..traded also not, because i ignored the caravans because it was not understood how the trading must be performed.
What armor and melee weapons to smelt ? for the squad.. i think there is no stock of this.
So, what armor and melee weapons (or archery weapons ? ) to start with ?

DF Gameplay Questions / Cavern of 2 z levels height

I made a staircase, but it is 2 z levels heigth in the cavern and mined deep
The dwarfs mined this out as there were 2 existing z layers
Seems to that when they made a down stair at a bottom layer and brake thru the floor ..they saw a dark cavern below
It probably simplified this game enviroment ?
It's a open connection now from the cavern to the fortress: what creep comes up ..

DF Gameplay Questions / dwarven child is starving from thirst

How to save the life of this child it has a blue Arrow (status icon) on it
The message was starving i thought so, while it is thirsty ?
There are drinks enough, so i add new barrels at top priority then to let the dwarf child to able to drink. ?
Pay attention to the miasma ( diagonal entrance ) and body remains cleaning and emergency health messages in the fortress

I assigned a hunting dog, but it seems to be disappeared ?..no trace of whatsoever to find ..or do i miss something?
Can it be eaten by a wild animal outside ?
