DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Need of iron ore
« on: March 25, 2020, 03:59:00 pm »
Thanks
It is by embark that Marble can be bypassed (how?)as a  flux stone ?

He's talking about editing the raws, but if your interest is just actually having flux, you can "bypass" the need to be overly concerned with whether your embark location has it by actually just bringing marble (or any other flux) with you when you embark.

Thanks
I noticed in other posts about the editing "the raws",
Did not get into yet and give it attention, but it is for modding

I did not understand all of the post of @NordicNooob anout making marble a not- flux stone ( first i thought the other way around )

It depends on what you're doing. If you had a particular type of embark in mind, you may want to tweak things to allow it, rather than change directions and adapt. Early on, in particular, it may be useful to concentrate on a few things in a fortress in order to learn them, rather than trying to run in all directions at once.
It is a sort of "easy mode" then.
I am totally agree that this learning strategy can be useful, but at the other hand if there is no iron at embark at all ,then other sources of iron can be sort out as you can read here in this thread.

It is not complete yet understood by me ( has to do with the language issues) for how this tweak exactly works, but it revolves i think about Marble treated as a iron ore in not sedimentary layers and this is easily found by mining.. marble ore.

Hmm .. changing some sofware as it in the intended use is written.
Seems to me not a real challence then to enjoy DFif , if you are not consider the flux layers at embark ( in my case as unexperienced  ), because there are some creative alternatives and who knows what this brings ?

But the expedition leader was a noble, what happened with him is he still a noble ?

Could not find it with dwarf therapist..there ar no Nobles to find ..or do i overlook it or not using ..?

I actually have an interesting suggestion, if you're particular to iron ore in future forts. Turn marble into non-flux. It's just removing the reaction class from it.

Why would you do that, you ask? It's simple: All other flux stones are sedimentary. By making marble not a flux stone, you do miss out on any extra flux you might have gotten deep underground, but you can the clear ability to see sedimentary stone layers on the embark menu, no DFhack needed! It's a rather workaround way because of that; if you don't like "cheating" that helps you without handicapping you (which is a fine line, using embark-assistant is hardly cheating), or just don't have DFhack (like if you're on the new version), this is the trick I use to get my precious iron.

Thanks

(Don't send your expedition leader, or you won't ever be able to make new squads).

a- Artifacts: Artifacts last seen held by someone cannot be recovered. Others can, but expect your squad to be gone for a year or so as they follow clues to find the artifact.

In the future you'll be able to follow squads in a separate window to see how they do. Will be a few years before that though.
Thanks
Following the squads should be  helpful feature with a time scheme
Only the squads seems to self supporting for food then ?

I assigned a expedition leader to the squad and made his profession : soldier.
That is conflicting for making new squads as you pointed out.
Finding back the expedition leader ( that's was his former profession, right?) in the fortress is not that easy yet.
I am still searching for the former expedition leader what i reassigned now from the squad and he was a soldier in the squad.

How to start a mission: for example one squad (with one squad member for now): from where is the mission started in or out fortress ?
What to see if a squad is going on mission  ( following is that possible ?)

I understood that once a squad is sent to a raid, there is no tracking of the squad on the worldmap.?
Are there coming announcements to aspect ?
Only now the distance off  the to be raided spot is known.

Light aquifers are slow enough you can dig right through them. Just keep on digging down. You do need to build a drain area at the bottom of your main stair well, but a slightly large flat area is good enough. The water will spread out and evaporate passively. You only need pumps to pierce through heavy aquifers.

As one of your first priorities you should build a bridge (drawbridge or regular bridge) to block your entrance and link it to a lever. Pull the lever to seal the vault doors, then just ride it out.

The aquifer will provide you mud for farming (infinite plump helmets) and water for either drinking or for hospitals.

A small area with a little plump helmet farm, a well, and either a tavern or nondenominational temple will sustain your fortress for eternity. It won't be a glamorous existence, but dwarves will be fed, watered, and happy through social/religious activities.

Building a drainarea at the bottom of the main stair.. how deep is your fortress?
There are first some light aquifer z levels and then rock z-levels
At some point you need rock or is this  done by the main stair construction ( a bend ) what goes deeper then.

The aquifer gives mud on the bottom of the drain area, don't see how to get mud ?

Having a lot of masterwork stuff is nice, but note that almost all dwarves want to do some sort of crafting occasionally. It's easy to just let your one legendary bone carver make a lot of money for your fort. But make sure to let others do it too.
Thanks!
Doing nothing they don't like, right?, especially when there are not hauling jobs set (maybe let the dwarfs hauling free dwarfs let 3 hauling jobs do: food , refuse and burial )
Crafting in general what can that be as jobs?

Just to make sure we're on the same page -- my masterworks, do you mean items like ☼this☼, or artifacts that the dwarf makes after getting an !, claiming a workshop, and creating something of their own?
Thanks
I will look at difference of those masterworks too!
But can i not treat all the masterworks as the same ?

Probably slightly buggy, I have a legendary potter immigrant who's never worked in pottery (or made an artifact) according to their history.
Thanks
Is this a structural issue? or a one time event.
What to conclude from this?
It's a mess or not ?

Any dwarf can become legendary, assuming they are given enough time to practice a skill.

Thanks

The relation between skill level and item quality is not yet clear yet for me.
It are the legendary skilled dwarves who are making master pieces, no one else do if they are not a legendary skilled dwarf, right?

I gradually replace the initial items with masterworks items and sell the old stuff.
Thanks
That's one application for the masterworks items, interesting.
Collect the masterpieces together at one stockpile, that could give a better oversight/handling in how
to use them further in the fortress ?
Nobles  and public areas i will look there
