DF Gameplay Questions / Re: First steps in military
« on: March 19, 2020, 10:55:08 am »

As mentioned above, make sure none of your soldiers have Mining, Woodcutting, or hunting labors selected.  Those labors interfere with military settings and cause the dwarves to not pick up equipment.
Thanks
A  laborious thing to do , because its only in Unit list to see what labor skill the concerning dorf has.
You can't see in the squad list where the miners, woodcutters, rangers are listed ..or do i miss something ?

BUT ..there is dwarf therapist...now only miner/woodcutter /ranger labor set off?
Wondering if there are more then 1 squad DT shows this too

Thanks
Clicking with mouse in Military screens makes it much easier.

The miltia commander in the squad  has a bismuth bronze battle axes choosen  for "īndividual choice , weapon" and the other 9 dwarves has not  choosen (could not, because there were no weapons ?) a individual weapen choice.-> how to get weapons for them ?

Suppose the squad members were all soldiers ?->. no i give them all names:  soldier
They are training and do work in their Original profession? ...no hauling jobs for them seems to me

Alerts: do have now 2 squads and toggle A ( Enter: Set squad to alert)  off is not possible? (removing A (=alert)
Set all 2 squads on training (T) in Barrack and how about i,q options ? ( there is individual or Squad equipment ? )

Did not assign uniforms yet, but <U> in equipment screen gives a uniform template ( leather, steel and archer) for one dorf or whole squad ..well at least they wear a uniform.

Seems that clothing not always goes together (fit) with armor wearing : replace clothing option ..the dorf wears only armor (clothing) ( the dwarves get no bad thought if only wearing armor) -> well, then i let the squad only wear armor ..is this a good idea ?

Now only assigning weapons to the squad , but choosing one is not that easy : Dorfs only carry a weapon if their profession requires one : miner, woodcutter, hunter and soldier
So supposse i make(choose) all soldiers in a squad ?

Yes, i am lost with the militairy screen: assigning a squad is not a problem, but what the initial outfit of a dwarf is ? (beginsituation).

-

Dwarves start with regular clothing.  You need to make, loot, or buy them armor.

In the military screen you can create an outfit type or use an existing preset type (armor and weapon), then you can assign it to an entire squad at once and it applies to any, past and future, dwarves you add.  Or you can assign them one by one if you want.  I usually end up with preset outfits that I name like: Axedwarf, speardwarf, crossbowdwarf.  Then I apply them to the squads as needed.

You can specify the type of armor and the materials they'll choose.  If you don't specify materials, they'll just use the best they find laying around.

When setting armor, set it to "Replace clothing" to avoid bugs.

Outfitting unskilled Dwarves in heavy metal gear slows them down at first until they work up some armor use skill.  Leather armor solves this problem but also leaves them pretty unprotected.

Does that help?
Thanks
Yes, it makes it more clear what i already had roughly in mind and ofcourse the dwarves  do have regular clothing and armor comes on top of this.
- preset armor/ weapons
- custom armor/ custom weapons
Its not really intuiative the militairy screen...

Start with metal or wood axes, and wood shields.

To help you learn how to use squads, you can attack wildlife.

Put two dwarfs in a squad, use 'm' 'e' to assign any weapon and shield, use 's' 'a' 'k' to order the squad to attack any non-flying animals. Use 'v' 'f' to follow one of the dwarfs, and use 'r' to read the reports.

If you do this, you can learn while attacking weak opponents.
Thanks
Using the squad.. i  make a second squad ..good

So, you'll want to set their alert to "active". And set their barracks to train. Then they'll stop carpentry and stuff and actually get to work in the barracks (after putting in their uniforms, hopefully).

"Active" alert gives them a schedule that sets them to train every month. (Alerts are tricky, scroll to the "active" alert, then move across to the squad name, then push enter).
Thanks

Active training : 1 squad, no burrow restriction and scheduled list on top : months  .. squads : "The bust of Channeling"
So i presume the training is scheduled for the whole year now.

First they were all : recruit and now they are all ( 8 of them ) wrestlers ( its only T(raining) now in the barrack) and there is a marksdwarf and militia commander in the squad too ( makes total of 10 )

The schedules training squad has no uniform or armor or weapon yet..let me look if they gathering in the barrrack?

The squad seems to be unarmed and wear no uniforms...
Other members are brewing, carpenting : make barrels, beds , chair ,bucket, door ,table, armor stand
There is a temporality stop for prepare easy meals
All this with the jobmanager and conditional

There is a basic defense (moat + some bridges (=underground bridge what is not working yet ?) and burrow + dogbomb at the entrance … some more cagetraps added  later)

Two dwarvenchilderen are deceased ( let me check for a cestern or coffin afgain for the happiness feel) and the population is 64 members and happiness level is 57 white (fine), 4 lightblue (quite content), 2 darkblue (happy) and 1 dwarf (planter, bookkeeper ) seems to be ecstatic

What next ? .. stay away from the caverns for now
Some basic setting up trading and crafting facilities ? ..try to get weapons+ armor ? and existing squad get a uniform?

Ok its a bug, (found it already strange to be inactive and sleep and train and gain a high skill  ) , that's why i ask: how about this .. i follow your instructions
lol.. was a little bit complicated, because they went all to a burrow, but i managed to get the squad back in the barrack.

They have now a helmets on ( status icon = squad member ?) (eq ind/ squad ? = on ) some and not the whole squad is there : the unit list gives info what the squad is doing!

I did not assign armor or melee weapons (could not , because there were not i think )
Then i must try to get some armor and weapons for the squad?

There is no ore yet to get metal weapons /armor  and  they wear also not uniforms  ( was this handy by assigning a squad ?.. or must they have at least leather armor? )

Note : Only first level z underground has gotten  cave moss and floor fungus from the caverns
Yes, DF on steam , should be easier the GUI...interesting to try to get the most out of DF : lose is fun ?

Wait for something to happen.

Thanks

Lol, I'll make it easy for you.  Set them to "inactive", and thats it.  Oh, and make sure they have a barracks somewhere set to training and sleeping.  They'll all revert to civilian, and sit in the barracks and do individual training. You'll have a bunch of legendary dwarves in no time.

How about this?... i assigned 10 dwarves  ( no vital dwarves like miners , carpenters , etc ) inactive and let them sleep and train

I read here: it would be nice if you had some armor and weapons lying around , either smelted yourself or traded for
Even wooden training weapons will do for learning the basics of the military system

Could be the most complex subject in Dwarf Fortress is th emilitary system ?

Ok, smelted yourself .. no experience with this ..traded also not, because i ignored the caravans because it was not understood how the trading must be performed.

What armor and melee weapons to smelt ? for the squad.. i think there is no stock of this.
So, what armor and melee weapons (or archery weapons ? ) to start with ?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Cavern of 2 z levels height

Why would adding a floor below a staircase to block the hole below be a programming failure?

An Up/Down staircase is a stair upwards and a hole in the floor downwards (with the potential stair on the tile below joining up with the current one through the hole). A Down staircase is just a hole in the floor, while an Up staircase is a floor and a stair upwards.
Sorry, i forget to mention on what person i react on, it was not on your post, but on the construction of a  staircase shaft from @Iduno
http://www.bay12forums.com/smf/index.php?action=post;quote=8107284;topic=175909.0;last_msg=8107474Or do i miss something  :)..could be that there is confusion about a safety stair ? ( i don't know what that is in DF)

The programming failure (possible? )is  that a spider from a cavern below don't come into the fortress , caused by the stairway construction.

It's all a little bit complicated what safety stair constructions can be made when entering a cavern?

Thanks
Remarkable that chancing the stairshaft direction prevents the spiders to sneak in the fortress
Seems to me a programming failure or not?
Safety stairs ? ..you mean that vertical combined  horizontal shafting ?

For now i build a wall to replace the door to the Caverns, because the fortress has a basic defense and not yet militairy forces
