Spoiler: Attributes (click to show/hide)

Everything looks great! What an interesting character you have. Just go ahead and post in the IC thread. The link is at the top of the very first page. Let's just say that you're already in the auditorium.

257
"letter here says "sec-1023". Guess that's what I was supposed to put on those rollers. Not used to teleportin' at all..."
show my copy of the letter to them if they don't believe me.

Taking the letter, the man gave it a quick read before handing it back to you. "It seems that you were mistaken about the code to your destination," he remarked as he motioned to the dais behind you. "Please go back and input the correct code."

The strange man continued to watch as you returned to the dais and inputted the correct code. There is no way you're doing any reckless exploring for the time being. The man continued to watch you as you disappeared into the tunnel again.

"Well, if he's done, might as well get it over with myself."

Sully marches over to the teleportation dais - 1993, she was dead on about him being dumb muscle - and turns the last four rollers to 1023, putting everything else at zero.

Unlike a certain idiotic marksman, you are actually capable of using your gray matter correctly and thus entered the correct code. As the cocoon of light enveloped you, you glanced at the rest of the students. Because they were on the dais as well, they were enveloped. Soon, everyone were hurtling through a tunnel of multicolored lights, some of you screaming at the top of your lungs. After what felt like an eternity, you and the other students exited the tunnel and landed in a tangled heap in front of the dais. After untangling yourself, you stood up and found yourself taking in quite a sight.

The entire auditorium was a massive, inverted cone shaped hollow 60 stories deep with seats numbering in the hundreds of thousands arranged in concentric circles around the stage at the base of the structure. Most of them were already filled with students of all ages, ranging from teenagers to senior citizens. They were chattering among themselves though some cast disinterested glances in your direction, no doubt seeing your group as yet more new students enter the auditorium. Television screens measuring 200 meters diagonally floated in the air on platforms that emitted strange humming as cyan light shone from the engines within. Following the signs, you and the others used the teleporters to get to the eighteenth row. To your surprise, you found none other than the dumb muscle who'd teleported to Room 1993 earlier. How is he even still alive is beyond you.

Suddenly the other new students begin to quiet down as they looked toward the stage. The television screens showed two swirls of golden dust dance around each other before exploding into a shower of spark. In their place stood a beautiful woman who were flanked by two people, a man and a woman. Both of them have silvery hair, silver eyes, and a strange sheen on their skin. Their faces were masks with not expressions, yet were remarkably human. Both were dressed in the same colors as the students, though they looked more like the faculty of this academy.

The woman's face; however, was lit up with a big, warm smile, almost as if she is a motherly woman welcoming stray children into her home. Her golden hair was styled into thick ringlets at the ends and fell to the back of her neck. Her frilly, white blouse and black pencil skirt with gold trimmings seemed to accent her curves as her black stockings and heels added the finishing touches. As her earrings, which resembled winged swords with halos much like this academy's coat of arms, danced as she turned her head toward the students' faces, her golden eyes seemed to glow ever so slightly as she took in the sights of the students who she will soon be throwing into the meatgrinder.

"Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Altera Vita Academy!" she spoke as she raised her arms in a theatrical fashion. Despite her distance to your row and those above you, you can still hear her voice as if you were sitting on the first row. This is strange though, considering that you can neither see any speakers nor do you believe that her voice came from the televisions. "No doubt you'd read and followed the directions on the letter to make it here in at least one piece though there are some who may have taken a wrong turn beforehand." The strange woman seemed to wink playfully in Metz' direction.

Clearing her throat, she continued, "It was I who'd left the letters and weapon assembling gems on your desks and it was I who'd summoned you all here. I am Headmistress Madeline T. Goldenchilde and I have much to show you. At my side are just two of my wonderful custodians and guards. Known as Seraphim, they will attend to your needs and will help keep order within Altera Vita Academy. I will show you all not just about this wondrous academy that will be your new home but how to function, even thrive, here and out there. Despite the fact that all of you are going to die horribly, no doubt more than once, you will eventually learn new tricks and skills so that you might die less than usual. A little progress is still progress, no?"

At this, the students begin to murmur restlessly, even fearfully, at what they'd just opened their eyes to. Some of them were even shouting at her about how unfair all of this are to them. Her warm smile not even wavering a bit, Madeline motioned for silence with a raised hand. Eventually, everyone quieted down.

"However, I'm not going to force you to accept this second life, this second chance, at doing what you failed to do during your time among the living: have  some sort of fulfillment and a purpose. Just say the word and I'll transmigrate you to the next cycle of existence, to whatever fate you'd earned in life. However, if you choose to stay, I'd feel much appreciated and the best part is you won't cheat yourself out of this do-over. Not many people get this chance after all!"

Taking a deep breath, Madeline continued, "Before I start the tour of your resident sector, I am more than happy to answer any questions you have. Don't worry about waiting your turn to speak; I will hear every question you ask and will answer each of you directly. You all may experience a state of...*ahem* isolation as everything around each of you are grayed out and muted so that we can have our one-on-one Q & A section. To viewers outside this auditorium; however, I would be moving as a blur, sputtering out rapid gibberish. Consider it one of my abilities. Now, ask away!"

258
"sorry sir, I'm new here, musta made a mistake on the numbers. Mind sending me back or to this audi-torium that I need to get to?"
be quiet, polite and respectful. Hopefully they will get me out of this mess if I'm nice.

The man stares at you for a solid minute, as if trying to figure out whether you're lying or not. Finally, he replied, "Altera Vita Academy has over 5,000 auditoriums, each assigned a number. Which one are you're trying to go?"

259
Metz would look to the set of rollers on the dais, and quietly move over to investigate them. four numbers? perhaps it wants a year.
Metz would input "1993" onto the rollers, provided he figured out how to operate them.

Suddenly, the dais hummed to life. Immediately, you became wreathed in a cocoon of light before being transported elsewhere. To your fellow students, you simply breezed into the dais and disappeared with a great whoosh. To you; however, you find yourself being sent flying through a tunnel of multicolored lights. Voices, which presumably belonged to others travelling though other tunnels within the ether, echoed all around you. However, you couldn't make any of them out. Even if you could, you wouldn't have time to do so before being deposited at your destination.

Getting your bearings, you find yourself surrounded in a cyan haze with electricity crackling in the air. Ahead of you, as far as your eyes can see, you can see what appeared to be gigantic cylindrical towers connected to each other by large tubing and decorated with lightning rods and tesla coils. Each tower was belching out huge volumes of a strange cyan-colored smoke from their tops, which was feeding into a massive thunderstorm raging above your head. Every ten seconds, a torrent of blue lightning bolts streaked down from the tumultuous 'sky' and into the lightning rods, with stray bolts being redirected to the rods by the tesla coils. However, for some reason there was no thunder. Either whoever in charge of this operation has installed some sort of sound-dampening system or this thunderstorm is truly unnatural. Based on this observation, you were able to deduct that this was a massive power plant that's presumably supplying power to this 'Altera Vita Academy' or at least a section of it if what the letter said holds true... if you read it in the first place. Have you even read the letter?

At the base of the nearest tower were several humanoid shapes, milling around in various tasks. As you continued to watch them, one of them noticed you. Suddenly, the figure spouted wings of light and flew toward you faster than your eye can blink and landed about three meters away. Now that the figure was close enough, you can make out it appearance. The figure looks for all intent and purposes like a young adult human male with neck-length, silver spiky hair. He wore a white, long-sleeved shirt with gold trimming on the cuffs, a golden vest with decorative patterns on its surface that matched the ones on his gold tie, black slacks, and black leather shoes. However, his face was expressionless and his skin appeared to have a strange sheen to it as if he wasn't entirely human, just in case you haven't already figured that out. He is completely unarmed while you have a weapon, though who can say that those wings are the only things he can summon.

"This is a restricted area per Headmistress Madeline's orders. Only permitted personnel are allowed access here," the strange man spoke in an airy monotone, a sound that reminds you of air being blown into an empty jug. His silver eyes continued to bore into you. "Please show me your identification and permit."

You reeeeeaaaaaally should've read the letter.

Forum Games and Roleplaying / (IC)Altera Vita Academy- A Red Day
« on: April 06, 2018, 09:31:17 pm »
(OOC here)

You wake up as if from a long sleep yet you don't feel tired at all. Either you have had plenty of rest or you are too confused by your surroundings to feel sleepy. You appeared to be inside a bedroom whose furniture and decorations are tailored to your tastes. You are also confused by what you're currently wearing, a white and gold school uniform with black trimmings. Getting a feel for your surroundings, you noticed a letter and a strange gem on your dresser. The letter's contents left you even more confused than ever. This isn't the sort of afterlife you'd envisioned when you were alive nor was it anything you were brought up to believe. In fact, you felt conflicted, even worried, about what you will face here. Maybe this is the second life you would come to love or maybe you shouldn't have died. Regardless, the questions will have to wait until you meet this "Madeline T. Goldenchilde' woman.

Grabbing the 'weapon assembling gem', you thought about the kind of weapon you would like to have. The strange crystal emitted a subtle ringing before giving out a flash of multicolored light. Immediately, it begin to fold itself into various shapes, extending this part here and blossoming this part there. Finally, it formed into the weapon you'd envisioned. You then shuddered when a beam of light streaked out of the weapon and into your heart. As a cyan blob of light grew inside your chest, the beam faded into nonexistence but not before molding itself into the shape of a chain. The blob grew to the size of your fist and contracted rhythmically like a heart before fading away. However, not only do you feel connected to your weapon but you also begin to feel as if something has been awakened inside your very being, almost as if it's been latent your entire life... until now.

Satisfied, you exited the room and entered a large circular area lined with doors that lead to other rooms. Nearby, other people of various ages are holding strange weapons. By their confused stares, you deducted that they are more or less in the same predicament as you. Perhaps they too are searching for answers and a purpose.

In the center of the area is a dais with golden trimmings. Sitting on its surface is a platform with a long row of rollers with numbers carved on their ivory surfaces. Though you only needed to input four numbers, you have a feeling that they are only part of the first step to understanding this second life even more... and to move on to your destiny.

I hope that I'd answer your questions clearly.

You did, thanks for the quick reply. One last question: Will weapon attachments/charms be our only way of augmenting our Attributes or will there be the possibility of increasing them permanently through other means?

They won't be the only ways to augment your Attributes. You can boost your Attributes through skill you learn and by using your Q-Gems. However, gaining points through levels will be a permanent way to boost your Attributes.

Attention everyone. I'd received the minimum number of apps and will be making the necessary changes. If things go smoothly IRL I'll start the RP later today or tomorrow afternoon. I will start with something of an introduction to help you understand the mechanics of Altera Vita.

In the meantime, I will PM you the invite to the Discord channels. Thanks for your interest and patience!

Rough translation: Good application! Wait here while I have a chat with your master.

Does this check out?

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

Though your character checks out for the most part, I have some concerns about your Psyche. I was under the impression that your Psyche would summon Egan's character, that he would pretty much function as a familiar you will summon and not as a pet you already have. Either you must change your Psyche to one that summons him or he will have to change his character to a student. I'd hate to let your character have an unfair advantage by starting with an item despite just now arriving at Altera Vita Academy.

However, not all hope are lost! You can always research Perks that will enhance the capabilities of Egan's character as well as learn skills (like the 'Rally' skill you mentioned in your app earlier.

Will we be able to modify our weapons or is the fullest extent of that going to be the charm system?

You can make your weapons modifiable, just learn the recipes of the attachments and craft them. Normal, any weapon attachments gives you a buff in certain Attributes according to their purpose and that's it though nothing's stopping you from crafting weapon attachments that are themselves Totems.

Also, can you explain in more detail how totems and their respective charms would work, and how players would go about making/acquiring them?

Totems are single items that have been imbued with Charms. Just think of them as talismans that you can carry around and spend Q-Gems to use whenever necessary. Charms are 'reality-warping', highly versatile abilities that have a specific purpose, mainly making an action easier for the user. For example, a spy who wants to infiltrate a village would use a Charm that allows her to emit an aura that causes people to be less likely to notice or remember them while a scout can use a Charm to 'see' in an area around an arrow he'd just fired. However, Charms cannot be used to directly attack an enemy like a weapon or fireball can. Charms may be researched just like Perks though due to their capabilities, they will take twice as many weeks to acquire/level. Totems can be crafted like any regular item though their recipe must be learned beforehand. I hope that I'd answer your questions clearly.

Still thinking about whether or not to commit to this. I currently have two character concepts:
-Crusader who died a martyr and thinks this is his purgatory. Class would be the charisma one, and as his ability it'd be something related to inspiring or buffing other people. Any idea how this could work mechanics-wise?
[/spoiler]

Your crusader's Psyche can work by buffing nearby allies' Attributes as those pretty much determine how many successes they can possibly have, depending on their actions. You may choose which Attributes to boost though since he's just starting out, he's limited to at least two Attributes with +2 boost to whichever you choose. However, any Perks he researched can be used to modify his Psyche so that it can either provide additional boosts or even different buffs.

-Biomancer. His ability would be to make alterations to people's biology to buff them or give them more options. If that's not what is meant with special ability, perhaps dissecting (or vivisecting) things to learn more about them? And which class would be better for this, the builder one or the researchy one?

EDIT: a friend of mine from the forum wanted me to ask if it would be possible for him to play as my familiar, preferably a crow. Would that be acceptable in any way, elven? I could of course take it as my psyche power. Just an idea, could be neat.

Your Biomancer will be limited to one alteration since it has the potential to boost two or more Attributes or add a whole new dimension of combat depending on what it allows the recipients to do. Also, though you can have this ability regardless of caste, it can synchronize well with any of them. Whether you can use the extra oomph in combat as a Firespark or take advantage of the higher research bonuses as a Watersplash to research Perks fast, it is up to you.

On the matter of your friend, continue reading below...

i like birds

Specifically what I was thinking, so that Radio doesn't have to squeeze my words through the funnel of IRC and into here:
A non-sapient crow familiar, with only very basic understanding of language or tools. Can take verbal commands from its master thanks to something something magic but doesn't understand what anyone else is saying. Some kind of magical power, not too picky what in particular, more for radio to decide.

Roleplaying as a familiar is a strange but potentially interesting idea. Basically, you'll just roleplay as a non-student character who will start out with 50 points to spend for your Attributes. However, because you're not a student, you won't be able to do any progress-dependent actions, nor will you be able to join castes or  take advantage of their bonuses to Attributes and skill point placements and if radio's character gets taken out during a fight you will disappear as well. However, in addition to the extra Attribute points, you will benefit from any Perks radio researched without lifting a finger and will receive 20% of the experience  their character gains but only if you're not directed involved.

I'll start as soon as I get as least six people to join.
Isn't that a bit high of an expectation? I mean, this is the first I've seen of you on the forum games board.

Besides, the sooner you get the ball rolling, the more other people will have to go off of, and thusly the more interest will be drawn to it.

Hmm, Perhaps I can get started if at least one more person joins. I still have plenty to write though.
