So, I'm looking forward trying to upgrade my computer at some point in the not far future, and given what I want I'm facing some issues: Mostly that I want a decent computer capable of running modern games (the non super demanding ones anyway) minimally well but also with a good deal of single threaded performance for DF and other games likes that. And to compound the situation, I'm on a budget, so I can hardly slap a 300 USD dollar CPU (well, I could get the CPU but then I couldn't buy the motherboard for it :P ) that would be the top-ish of the line for both and be done with it.

It honestly make me wish that there was some mixed performance multi-core CPUs on the market to be fair, but since that wouldn't be feasible without either shelling even more for a multi-cpu MB or McGuverying something fierce (and far beyond my current technical skills) I'm looking for advice for what to pick.

For now, I'm looking at these options for processors:
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+FX-6300+Six-Core&id=1781
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=AMD+Athlon+X4+860K+Quad+Core&id=2362
https://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu.php?cpu=Intel+Pentium+G3258+%40+3.20GHz&id=2267

In particular, I'm so far favoring the Athlon, although I can't say anything definite yet. And, of course, in the ridiculous off-chance that the price fall down enough or my budget rises sufficiently, I'd rather go with this baby, but that's just a dream for quite a while yet. :P

Masterwork DF / What's going on? Catch me up.
« on: March 06, 2015, 03:03:49 pm »
So, I haven't really kept up with Masterwork DF since 5.1, when a mix of real life and waiting it to update to the latest DF version kept me away. Now coming back I'm rather lost. What is Masterwork Reborn? Is it a fork of Masterwork or is a new version with the old one discontinued? Is it already stable and ready to play or does it need more development to be in a "fully playable" state?

Masterwork DF / Legendary Weapons - Blunt vs Edged
« on: July 22, 2014, 11:20:50 pm »
Going through the weapon tables from the manual, just noticed one thing:

The legendary blunt weapons are objectively significantly better than its edged counterparts. That is, while they seem nearly completely identical, given the much higher weight given to edged attacks in opposition to blunt attacks, and that the legendary attacks not only have superior stats over all but also are always edged, making so that legendary blunt weapons nearly always pick the the legendary attacks, unlike the legendary edged weapons that still have a fair chance of picking the "merely" good normal attacks.

A quick look over in Arena mode does seem to indicate that it is such, with the legendary attacks having a rather high statistical weight. Nearly all attacks with the supposedly blunt weapon (strangely enough, the dwarf seems to enjoy a bit too much using their hands instead of their weapons o.O ) goes over the legendary strike, with "Righteous Angry of Sigmar" this and "Holy Wrath of Sigmar" that.

While it's not a big problem in itself, specially given that Legendary weapons are supposed to be legendary and all that, but it does create two problems: Boring combat logs with little variety, and an imbalance between the legendary weapons, with blunt weapons being objectively better than the normal ones.

Not the first time I ask something of the like, but I'm desperate enough to repeat myself: Is there any game, ideally an RPG, perhaps a roguelike, with a good melee combat system that does have tactical options that are feasible and interesting but not completely overpowering? Ideally turn based or similar, but I'm willing to compromise in this. :P

Or maybe a martial arts RPG? Or anything that have a melee combat more fun than "I stab, you stab, repeat." that seems to be the norm? Jade Empire is out because I already know of it. The obvious answer of DF adventure mode is also out, both because I already know it and because that particular aspect of DF is not nearly polished enough to be the main thing of the game. Mount and Blade, aside from me knowing of it, is not quite what I'm looking for either, for it's focused more on mass combat, with the melee at a duel level being kinda boring.

Hell, if it's a turn based rpg, rogue like or not, I'm willing to take anything that has the option of doing combat maneuvers more complex than just a choice between attacking for damage or spending "mp/ki/whatsoever" for extra damage.

Anything? Please?

Essentially as the title says. I've been looking for more games, ideally RPG, adventures, or other kind of game where you act as a single character, where your actions can eventually get your enemies terrified of you, and the narrative and gameplay actually reflects on it. Only real restriction is for it to be on the PC (if the game is truly awesome, GBA, DS or older consoles are also acceptable, but not preferred)

That is, giving some examples: Fallout New Vegas, other than a few moments such as the use of the "Terrifying Presence" perk and the crippled powder ganger, don't actually quite count. Even as you lay waste all by yourself to entire Legion/NCR/Tribals/Gangs Camps/Forts/Whatsoever, your enemies never show that delicious primal fear, that desperation when facing certain death.

On the other, Metroid Prime does, specially when she's facing the Space Pirates. They might put a fight, but you can taste their desperation, specially if you see their logs. You are as an apocalypse unto them and they know it. Another good example would be Dishonored, specially after Corvo makes even more of a name for himself. The chatter and paranoia of your foes is simply delicious. Baldur's Gate 2: Throne of Bhall (but not Shadows of Amn) qualify somewhat, as, even if the gameplay itself doesn't quite reflect it, the narrative does. Many enemies are terrified of you, even as they themselves stand far and above most of the rest of the world.

Halo 2 and 3, from what I understand, also qualify, with Master Chief being getting downright mythical status among the Covenant forces, the "Demon". Darksiders might also qualify from what I heard, but I've yet to play it, so do tell me if it actually does. Prototype does qualify heartily though, even as they stand and fight, you can see their paranoia and taste their desperation.

Hell, Medieval Total War 2 would qualify with it's "Dread" mechanics if it wasn't a strategy game where you controlled armies instead of a character.

So, any more games like that? I starve for the fear of my enemies. I want to feel, smell and taste their fear, their despair. I want to hear their anguished cries and their whispered prayers. I want to be dreaded, the boogeyman that torments their nights, the demon that stand against all they cherish. I want for them to feel hopelessness as they hear I am coming or to stand alert for never knowing if I'm there or not until it's too late.

So, creepy desires aside, any games like that? Other than the ones I commented upon, of course, because I know of them already. :P Well, do confirm about it in Darksiders if you know about it, but I want more games like that. Suggestions?

Other Games / Looking For: Some Game With Proper Wizard Duels
« on: September 14, 2013, 11:17:00 pm »
As the title said, I'm looking for games where I can play some proper wizard duel, that is, involving passive protections, counters, direct attack spells, "status effect" spells, dispels and so on. Battles being a mix of a puzzle to figure out the proper counters with strategy to drive your opponent into a corner where they are unable to effectively defend themselves. All of this, with hopefully an extensive magic system, not merely a handful of spells.

Ideally, I'd like it be an RPG, but if there's some other genre with the kind of battles I'd like, I'm willing to take them as well. Also, I'd rather that it did not use the Vancian magic system, I have some personal issues with it. :P On the feel, so to speak, something like GURPS magic, or perhaps Magic the Gathering.

Speaking of which, I guess the games inspired by MtG might be one of the options if I don't find anything else...

DF Gameplay Questions / Guided Minecarts and tracks
« on: September 07, 2013, 02:33:34 pm »
Do hauling routes set to guide minecarts actually need tracks?

If so, do they need a circuit track, or single line is enough? I mean, if I do something like:

O========O

Can it go back and forth?

Or do I need something like this?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Animal Overcrowding: How to Avoid?
« on: August 31, 2013, 01:32:10 pm »
I've been using an animal heavy strategy, and of course, pasturing the animals in 1x1 zones to avoid them fighting with each other.

What I'd like to know is if I need to have the pastures away from each other, with a buffer zone in between, or if I can just pasture them contiguously.

Refining mithril:

I was looking at the raws, the refining native mithril seems to be more efficient when done at the finishing forge with the cold hammering reaction that at the crucible with the refining reaction. Specifically:

Code: [Select]
[REACTION:RAW_MITHRIL_MITHRIL]
[NAME:extract mithril from raw mithril]
[BUILDING:CRUCIBLE:CUSTOM_M][BUILDING:MAGMA_CRUCIBLE:CUSTOM_E]
[REAGENT:A:3:BOULDER:NONE:INORGANIC:RAW_MITHRIL]
[PRODUCT:100:1:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:MITHRIL]
[PRODUCT:50:1:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:MITHRIL]
[PRODUCT:10:1:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:MITHRIL]
   YESSLAGPIT[PRODUCT:100:1:TOOL:ITEM_TOOL_SLAG:INORGANIC:SLAG]

[REACTION:COLD_MITHRIL]
[NAME:cold hammer mithril]
[BUILDING:FINISHING_FORGE:CUSTOM_ALT_M]
[REAGENT:A:1:BOULDER:NONE:NONE:NONE:NONE][REACTION_CLASS:MITHRIL]
[PRODUCT:100:1:BAR:NO_SUBTYPE:METAL:MITHRIL][PRODUCT_DIMENSION:150]
Essentially, the crucible have a 1.6 bar expected product per 3 boulders, or 0.533 bars per boulder, while the cold hammering outright give a 1 bar per boulder, and not only that, the crucible also requires fuel, which means either magma or coke/charcoal.

Is this the intended result?

Masterwork DF / Animal, Pets and Livestock: What's your strategy?
« on: August 11, 2013, 12:44:38 pm »
Masterwork DF creates a lot of new animals for your dwarfs to use. What are your favorites? And animals do you insist on taking? For defense and war? For hunting? For shearing and milking? For butchering?

Personally, I insist on always taking at least a drake couple. They are naturally armored which is awesome. In addition, a frill lizard or two, to deal with vermin. Other than that, it depends on how many embark points I have to spread around. Some turtles, some beetles, some boozebelly goats, etc.

Play With Your Buddies / Space Empires V MP - Interest Check
« on: June 17, 2013, 04:48:33 pm »
So... I've recently started to play SEV again, and the given the AI, I've been wondering if there's interest for a multiplayer game. We could do it PBEM (well, or Play By Dropbox but that doesn't make a nice acronym. :P) or try to set a time for the game. And unless someone objects, I'd say we can use the Balance Mod 1.19i.

Opinions?

Other Games / Looking for: Does something like this exist:
« on: March 02, 2013, 06:09:20 pm »
I was yearning for some game with complex melee combat. That is, some game where I could for example, decide to grapple someone, get them down to the ground, and stab them with a knife while they are down, without this being an already pre-programed combo. Or summing it up, I want more games with a combat system similar to that of Dwarf Fortress. :P

Any games you guys can recommend me? Other than Dwarf Fortress itself that is... :P

Other Games / Worms: Revolution
« on: September 14, 2012, 02:19:19 pm »
Haven't found any thread about it yet. Seems a new worms is coming. Here's the steam page: http://store.steampowered.com/app/200170/?snr=1_4_4__100 and here's the wikipedia page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Worms:_Revolution

I'm very skeptical, since Armageddon the worms games have been, well... But anyway, for 15 USD and a free copy of Armageddon, it is somewhat tempting.

Other Games / Saints Row: The third
« on: September 03, 2012, 03:24:02 pm »
Well, I shouldn't need to describe the game, but anyway:

The Saints Row series can be described as a GTA-Clone, except it dials the immaturity, awesomeness and sillyness to eleven. In the third game, the one in the title, in the introductory mission you will have jumped from a plane, then as you are falling and the plane (a huge passenger craft) tries to ram you, you will kick it through the windows, grabbed an extra parachute in the way and came out in the other exit.

You can also beat random pedestrians with huge purple dildo.

Yeah, don't let the ratings mislead you. This game does not have any mature content, it's all incredibly immature. Funny as hell, and far more fun to go into random rampages.

But back to business: I've recently received a 50% discout cupom on steam for any Saints Row: The Third DLC(s). Which ones are worthy it, and which ones are a piece of money sucking crap?
