DF Suggestions / Re: fishing and workshop orders: a plea
« on: May 09, 2018, 02:45:21 pm »
OP Dude, why don't you set the flag SET_LABOR_LISTS in d_init.txt to NO. This disables all main skills from migrants so they are just left with the default hauling skills and feed wounded skills (which you probably want on noobs anyway). However they keep their titles, e.g. Fisherdwarf in the units screen. So whenever you need extra labour for an industry, it is easy to go down and pick an unused dorf, enable the required skill and add a customised profession name, e.g. fisher* (so that you can quickly distinguish in the units screen who you have and haven't assigned skills yet).

Using this simple system, I find no need for Dwarf Therapist, hence the LNP, because I can handle fortresses of 200+ dorfs with ease.

DF Suggestions / Re: two QoL suggestions

I think the single thing I would find most useful is lazy cursor behaviour. What I mean is that for example in fortress mode, after you press certain menu options like b or v, then the cursor remembers the position it was at before it recentres itself. So if you press the same menu option immediately afterwards, the cursor goes back to its remember position. Another example in adventure mode, when you press f to shoot a projectile, if you press f again, the cursor goes back to the remembered position, i.e. over the last target, instead of the current situation of having to move the cursor over the target every single time. It gets a bit tedious, especially if you are not using a mouse.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Iron Man Adventure Mode
« on: April 12, 2018, 06:18:25 am »
I have been trying to play adventure mode exclusively these past couple of months. I am used to following the advice given in the Powerplay guide, but now I am wondering if the real challenge is to do things by the book so to speak. If you power farm your skills in the beginning without facing real danger, then things become a bit too easy later I find.

So I was wondering, how many of you have played "iron man" mode and what is the furthest you have got before getting killed? What I mean by iron man is basically you do not do most things as recommended in the powerplay guide, including but not limited to:

repeatedly doing low damage strikes to defenceless animal training dummies
repeatedly throwing objects like mud and coins into thin air to level up the throwing skill
very selectively choosing the character traits so as to end up with the most easiest to satisfy needs as possible
stealing armor items at your starting location, ie just walking out without paying for them
the use of macros to level up skills when and wherever possible
using strategies, while not being outright exploits, feel a bit cheaty such as sneaking everywhere, using the OP status of throwing, etc.

So basically, a squeaky clean adventure. How far have you got?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Missing forgotten beast resident
« on: April 09, 2018, 09:54:18 am »
ok thanks for that. I don't use dfhack, just vanilla. Sounds like it is a bug in that case. There shoudn't be inaccessible areas, for now at least, maybe that is ok once myth and magic is here. I might report this on the bug tracker then.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Missing forgotten beast resident
« on: April 09, 2018, 06:46:45 am »
In legends viewer I spotted a fortress ruin with a population of 1 forgotten beast who had settled there and presumably killed off the locals.

So in adventure mode I went there with a party hoping to find and kill the resident beast. However I search the entire fortress top to bottom and didn't find a single soul. I think this is the second time this has happened. I was playing a different map a few months ago and couldn't find a resident forgotten beast. Is this a bug?

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Re: Companions disappeared
« on: February 08, 2018, 07:53:22 am »
This happened to me too. Took 4 companions to a fortress. 2 were stranded outside because they couldn't path in for some reason. I went in with the other 2. When I came out again, the first 2 had disappeared. I even went back to the hamlet I recruited them and they were not there. Just simply vanished.

DF Adventure Mode Discussion / Slow levelling of performance skills
« on: February 08, 2018, 07:09:52 am »
Trying to make my way in the world as a bard. Just wondering why it is so painfully slow to level up skills in poetry and music. I have been standing in a tavern for a few days giving constant singing and poetry recitals and my skills in the various forms level up oh so very slowly. Compared to being a warrior and levelling up combat skills it is all very tedious. To top it all, when I try to concentrate on giving performances for musical forms that I started out skilled with, the game ignores those skills and creates a new separate line on my status screen at the Dabbling level. So I am now levelling up Dabbling XXX where a few lines above I already have a Skilled XXX of the same name. Is a career in the performing arts bugged in general and should I just stick to being a warrior type?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Your fortress baron is deserting ?
« on: February 05, 2018, 06:40:47 pm »
Over in the Strange Reclaim Bug thread, I had a duke and a king leave a retired fortress and hang out in an abandoned ruin.  People like to arbitrarily resettle in worldgen mode.

But no, there is currently no mechanic for a citizen to leave your fort while you still control it.
Well I had a fort that was a mountainhome with king. When I retired/unretired I found out that the king and the outpost liason had both emigrated to a fortress that 6 years previously had been taken over by the goblin civ that had been at war with the mountainhome civ. So the king just decided to uproot and settle in the heart of the enemy. I think more logic needs to be applied to migration patterns in the activated world.

I have never messed with DFHack, preferring just to play vanilla DF. Could I ask what main things I am missing by not doing the exportlegends info command thing. Just to give me an idea if its worth going through installing DFHack or not. Is the amount of information available doubled? Or is it just minor embellishments that come with the expanded file?

DF General Discussion / Temples and creation myths
« on: January 09, 2018, 10:48:28 am »
At the moment temples don't feel fleshed out like taverns and libraries are. Could the next major update, ie creation myths, present an opportunity to augment temples somehow, eg creating temple to specific deity in the creation myths grants bonuses?

DF Suggestions / Re: Magma power station
« on: January 02, 2018, 09:40:15 pm »
It wouldn't use the kinetic energy of a moving liquid, more like geothermal energy, so converting the heat of the magma underneath to usable power. Systems like this exist in the real world.

DF Suggestions / Magma power station
« on: January 01, 2018, 08:07:45 pm »
How about a new building that works much like a magma forge but provides output power of say 20 to connect to power grid. Use it to power things deep down where it would be difficult to route power from windmills or rivers. Less cheesy than DWR too.

DF Suggestions / Simple option to make trading easier
« on: December 24, 2017, 09:18:03 am »
It would be good if we could designate items as a group for moving to the trade deport. So we could have d-b-t and use it in the same way as mass claiming or mass forbidding items. I usually set up stockpiles right next to the trade depot for things like worn clothes and this would make it easy when the caravan comes. For more consistency, maybe it should actually be d-b-g as the g key is used by the depot itself to transport goods.

Just to let you know that I downloaded the 1.15 .dmg and it gave the same problem. I am running MacOS Sierra 10.12.6. However I tried downloading the .jar file and that runs ok. Thanks very much for developing such a useful tool for us Mac DF players.
i've updated the plugin that creates the .dmg and reuploaded it to github and dffd. Can you send me a screenshot if you still get an error message?

Hi, I have redownloaded from GitHub and the .dmg file now opens successfully with no errors. Thanks again!
