DF Announcements / Re: Dwarf Fortress 0.28.181.39c Released

Members? I think you must have been looking at a different number or something.

Forum stats are here:
http://www.bay12games.com/forum/index.php?action=stats

You can also track daily, monthly, and yearly stats by expanding the bottom section.

Of course, all of the statistics are only from when the forum was converted over to SMF.

EDIT: and as you might expect, the most users online at a time jumped drastically on the day of the 39a release (the 14th, early morning).

Gators seem to get more awesome every release. From a mother spawning seventy in a closed cave system, to this attack.
Don't forget the advent of alligator drunks in 39a. Sadly, they were "fixed" in 39b. ;)

I've tested it and it works for me. He also includes a copy of the source in the zip file.

EDIT: though I am curious as to what's up with the different name and the wiki not being updated.

Hah, a human town in the world I just generated:
Resmituthru, "Beardedsquirt", a town

Sounds like they had dwarves in mind.  ;D

Of course I had to look it up in legends since the town showed as having no population at the end of worldgen. Maybe the dwarves wiped them out?
As it happened though, it was elves. After 4 years of constant attacks by several megabeasts giving them trouble, the town was attacked by two elves from the elven civilization "The Leopard of Cremations" in the year 5 and destroyed in that battle. I say battle, but the attackers were uncontested by any of the 9 humans living there so the elves won by default. Four of the humans after the battle were drowned (not eaten, for whatever reason) and the rest fled. Thus ended the fledgling human civilization "The Grasping Confederation".

I'm currently generating a large world and it goes very slow, even on my 2,4 Ghz Core 2 Duo. It even stops for a few seconds in some years. I'm not surprised through.
It seems stop every several years and clean out insignificant events; if you notice, when it stats back up the number of events stored will have dropped a fair bit.

I've had some fun looking through the world history logs. The last major event which heralded the end of prehistory in my first world was the death of one of the dragons. I looked up the person who killed the dragon, and found something amusing:

Apparently even though she had come to worship the dragon, she still specifically tracked it down and killed it. ;D
Oh, and she had a moderately long list of worshiped megabeasts besides the dragon.

If we were going to get a moderator, my bet would be on Janus getting the job, but thats unlikely due to the fact he's got a full-time job with the taleworlds forums, and knowing that Mount and Blade is going to go retail in only a few months... BUt that's not the point, we're mostly self moderating, since people who do end up being idiots for trolling purposes get banned, and those who are annoying usually change their ways and merge into the community.
Yeah, if I were actually offered any sort of moderator position I'd have to turn it down. I just don't have the time to commit to it.

That said, I do think that having a global moderator or two added on at some point would be a good idea. Just not me.  ;)

DF Suggestions / Re: Use UPX on dwarfort.exe
« on: July 02, 2008, 08:43:39 pm »
I remember an email about this, but I don't remember the details
Yeah, that was from me quite a while ago.  :)
I use UPX a fair bit myself, and I seem to recall testing a UPX packed executable in Wine without a problem.

I vote against it, simply because it might no longer be possible to scan through the exe to see all the possible (and possibly unused) modding tags.
This would be one problem. Another, I've found that some of the utilities (Regional Prospector or Reveal or something like that, I forget which) will also not work on a UPX packed copy of the DF executable. I'm not sure if they could be updated to work or not.

DF Announcements / Re: Poll on Signatures
« on: June 21, 2008, 10:00:09 pm »
I'm not sure how to detect sockpuppets in SMF polls.  I know I'd never run a poll like this based on something like DF feature requests, for example, because it's difficult to trust the process.  It seems like it's roughly working, given the breakdown of posts here, but I really couldn't be sure without more tools.

SMF allows you to see people's IP addresses. Assuming any puppeteers were dumb enough not to use proxies, you can tell from this. Any voters registered after this poll was started can also be suspect.

It actually tracks a list of pretty much all IP addresses ever used by each account. As an administrator, you can view their profile and go to "Track User", and it will list the IP addresses used along with links to any other accounts which have overlap in any of the recorded IP addresses. Of course, some places (schools in particular) use shared IP addresses, so that does have to be taken into account.

Assuming image signatures are allowed, we'll just have to see, although I wouldn't mind seeing the pro-image people discuss what they think is acceptable.  How do pro-image people feel about "ad" image links to other sites, or animated images, or those meme sigs?  Is that what you're signing up for?

My take:
Ad type images for any for-profit ventures (solicitation, basically) should be forbidden. Something for "myminicity" or whatever wouldn't bother me.
Animated images are fine with me as long as they don't fall into the flashing, epilepsy-inducing variety.
Meme sigs are also fine with me, if the person wants to use them.

That said, I have no real strong feelings on the matter; as long as they're not utterly annoying, they don't bother me.

EDIT: Also on linked thread, aways down one sign image is Kudos network for his free Amazon Gift?  And a link to claim my Free Nintendo DS?

Ah, thanks for pointing that particular one out. We don't accept solicitation for such things on the TW forums, so I just took that signature down.

I'm currently using IE, but will try now with Firefox, guess its my browser then (like always, uh)

update: yep, with Firefox it works fine. Better just not use IE anymore.

It should work in IE though. I just tested in IE7 and it worked fine. What version of IE do you have?

Didn't properly introduce myself in the previous forum, so hya.  :-*
Was wondering something though, the "jump to" button doesn't seem to be working with me, it always just directs me to the subforum i came from. Anyone else got the same issue?
You mean down in the bottom right corner? Working for me. It's supposed to jump to the specified board, and defaults to the board you're currently in. Drop down the list and select the board you want to go to. It should automatically go there once you select one, but if not, clicking the "go" button should make it do so.
If it's not working for you, what browser are you using?
