DF Suggestions / D-option for Kitchen for meals.
« on: December 27, 2018, 12:04:55 am »
I know, for many years, many players time after time required cooking receipts for kitchen. All their suggestions made lots of sense, but were not crucial and we never saw a single improvement in this area. Then came the psycho system in with 0.44.11.

IT IS ***CRUCIAL*** NOW TO STOP DWARVES FROM FALLING INTO DEPRESSION.

So Toady, HELP! HELP! HELP! the depression is crushing this game. Just add D-option for kitchen please, so we can add all the ingredients for easy, fine and lavish meal manually. O-be-one Toady, you're the only help, to many severely depressed Dwarves mulling mortified, ashamed and shaken over cloths rotting on them! And then over some rain and some random human dead body. Yeah, those depressive thoughts do add.

Bonus, this functionality would accidentally fix the bug with cooking with alcohol, which pests the bug report forum for last decade.

PS. It would help if z-stocks menu for prepared meals had toggle option to check for how many of each type ingredients are in these meals too. Meal name tells only about 1 ingredient. Maybe if we could pick with d-option first ingredient, the one which is naming the meal, then it maybe could help fix this issue too.
PS2. Could be something done about Dwarves not eating in the designed dining room? Eating in legendary dinning room helps with depression too.

There have to be some musical talents, who love Dwarven Fortress. What if DF community could compose and donate some copyright-free songs/albums to Dwarf Fortress? Those would be Dwarven songs of course about all aspects of Dwarven life. :)

Toady could set up announce on this forum to all users inquiring about it. Then he could contact all forum volunteers with their account's email address. It wouldn't take more then like 5 min of his very busy time. It would be up to him to chose, which of those songs end in the game of course. :)

Result would be streaming on Twitch Dwarf Fortress game with A LOT more songs to it, as currently some people could find DF music track too repetitious, when streaming DF for even few hours. :D There are some copyright-free music streams out there, but honestly they do not have Dwarven themed music in their repertoire. It surely would add more to the experience of playing Dwarven Fortress. Specially for streamers, who are trying to make this game more known in world. ;)

How about Toady looking around for some musical talents to donate some copyright-free songs/albums to Dwarf Fortress? :) Because, why not? He could set up announce on this forum to all users. Then he could contact volunteers with their account's email address. It is doable. Imagine streaming on Twitch Dwarf Fortress game with A LOT more songs to it. :D There have to be few musicians, who love Dwarf Fortress too. :D

How about planting those trees yourself? Though I never settled in arctic yet. I wonder how magma affect temperatures on surface. :D

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: How to keep track of stocks?

My issues usually result from bringing trading goods to Depot or rising alarm for Dwarves to hide in burrow during siege. Else farmers are rather tender with those wheelbarrows.

(To be fair to ToadyOne I believe that QSP's are an 'exploit' in the classic sense of being an unintended possibility of game mechanics.)

Oh, so you are also from the choir preaching QSP are an "exploit" because having 100 stone boulders on 1m2 is unrealistic? So, you imagine storage there you put one tiny sock in area of 1m2 and then second tiny sock in another 1m2 area is to contrary very realistic and indeed what people always should do... With stinking socks maybe yeah, but new ones? Come on. Oh well, I do not share this believe, though stone and wood QS could use some limitations, because how high this stockpile really is. 2m? 5m? Well, it hurts when you fall 1 level, so not 1m for sure. :D

I think this failed dumping of items from wheelbarrow is reported in bugs section for last decade. The idea for solution was to make Dwarves empty wheelbarrows from _ALL_ items upon its arrival to assigned stockpile. Not matter if brought or wheeled to. However, I was under impression this stone stuck in wheelbarrow bug was solved by Toady at begging of this year. Could this be on the part, when wheelbarrow is wheeled to stockpile only? Not when brought? I still am finding stones stuck in wheelbarrows too and only dumping of contents helps.

  • Socks <- socks and dwarves don't mix without issues. In this case most likely only one sock will be worn.

With my arrangement for uniform set up, there is no uniform issue with socks or other clothing. Dwarf always put civilian stuff first on, military second on. So my militia/military Dwarves are always wearing both socks. Only clothing made out of cloth in my fortress. Rest of clothing is made out of leather. In my current fortress, which is 15 years old, I didn't see yet a 1-sock trooper. Additional bonus is my civilian Dwarves enjoy defense bonuses from leather cloths, which in savage pocket world are useful. I had civilians on my earlier embarks losing arms and legs to savage animals. It doesn't happen any more.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Question about Frightened/Mental Trauma

Your dwarfs are happy mining... but they also like other work and activities. If you mined and did nothing else, you would get bored and depressed too.

As you can see above there is the thought "she felt satisfied at work". I just stopped mining 2 seasons ago, because this depression from rain and cloth-rot hit one of my other dwarves. Now 3 out of 7 of my miners is following example into depression. So mining, nothing else, is making those 3 out of 7 Dwarves depressed about life being too boring, not too abstract and not creative. Mining. Nothing else. Dwarves. Rain and cloth-rot just pushed those 3 over the emotional edge into depression with how boring mining is for Dwarven life.

Maybe I should make a bug rapport, that mining is making Dwarves depressed, when just few unhappy emotions added on top of it and Dwarven miners must suddenly in hurry become exclusively artists, scholars and military men?

The point with civilian clothing under armor is, it is out of leather. Leather brings leather armor defense value under metal armor value. So, I have strong preference for my military Dwarves to have civilian cloths under their metal armor. This is the reason why I put ban in my fortress on mittens, shoes, shirts and tunics, because they do not fit under military armor. Before I didn't care to remove them before hand, as they rot-off naturally from my Dwarves and... case closed.

Now, cloth-rot is causing major psycho havoc, because:
- clothing system is not polished
- psycho system is not polished
- military system is not polished
- tool-users system with hunters, miners and woodcutters is not fixed up
- last failed attempt by Toady at economic system implementation, left Dwarves stealing goods from stockpiles and is unfixed

Unbalanced, unpolished and lacking features (like hinting Dwarven best jobs, or stopping punishing with depression Dwarves for being miners) BELIEF SYSTEM makes Dwarven cloth replacement so extremely touchy. I surely wished Toady did not switched this system on, before making some serious overhaul on it.

Additional issue with self-pity I find with other Dwarves is abstract thinking.

It seem to keep all Dwarves happy I would need a barrack with a public access. How do I get one? I only got it working for squad members and there is maximum 220 Dwarven population.

Before I took under notice only what Dwarves were excelling at. Why there are no ingame job suggestions for Dwarves, if now BELIEF SYSTEM handles what Dwarves are good at, else they go psycho suicidal? Why Toady didn't implement any, when applying this psycho system? Why my Dwarves are refusing to perform mining jobs purely because they go psycho on base of BELIEF SYSTEM? Are they Elves in disguises? Dwarves should be happy to mine!

No need for an account...
- Screenshot the region on your screen
- go to imgur.com
- find the "New Post" button
- drag and drop the file from your file explorer into the dotted box on imgur
- right click on the image and select "copy image location" (or similar command) to copy the image's address
- add the image's address into your post for each image using DF forum's "Insert Image" button.

Ok. Here it comes. Right now Dwarf is depressing again. However when it was panic stricken with fear it was "afraid relieving experiencing trauma".

@Sarmatian123
Post screenshot(s) of one of your dwarfs so all of that dwarf's thoughts and beliefs are visible.

Let me guess, I need some account set up on some pictures sharing site... I don't have it. Sorry. Pity copy-paste does not work on text in Dwarf Fortress. I could write the entire text for you manually, if you want. It is just whole wall of text on screen. :D

6. In military menu a civilian dress code. (So I can set Dwarves to not put on themselves tunics, shirts, mittens, leggings and shoes, which do collide with military dress code and which are also an overflow in cloths for a need to cover body parts. Else I would need still d-b-d for XX-XX clothing, because those rotting cloths will cause issues)

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Best Used for Caged Sentients
« on: December 22, 2018, 01:25:29 pm »
Mass pitting and bridge covering bottom, brought me the solution. However pitting is currently buggy. Some do not experience those bugs. Some others went to dispose of their caged prisoners using mining cart cannon shoots. I however found out a suspiciously blinking dog on chain, when pitting was occurring. I reloaded, pastured it, re-chained... and suddenly mass pitting works for me perfectly. So, you can try that watching for suspiciously blinking dogs in your fortress. ;) I hope only dogs cause that, else it will be a problem. You can't exactly pasture Dwarves, can you. :)

My seed cap used to be always 2000 and I grew like 6 dwarven crops and 2 surface fruits/plants for brews. Now my limit is 6000 seeds, as someone here suggested to me. Now, I grew 8 surface plants/fruits there all are for brewing besides garden cress. Most of my surface farming is from harvesting wild plants, but lately I've got some berries from human caravan to expand that. I guess if I had elves, they would provide a lot more of surface berries and plants. That makes me almost wanting to start on new world that takes advantages from raids. One with a lot of civilizations and very populous, though still pocket size. lol

Systems I wish badly would get overhaul by Toady are:
1. Stress (dampen emotional reactions a wee, specially for rain)
2. Clothing (5 years instead of 2 years for wearing off)
3. Smelting (1:1 ratio of make to smelt metal items)
4. Automation (location pasture for animal automation? seed stockpiles giving to farm plots alternatively farming locations?)
5. Economy rework, so Dwarfs are not stealing random items, just to feel better. (special depot, there dwarves can acquire stuff from fortress, and nowhere else from, so I do not need to reposes their stuff with d-b-d)

I do not ask for reworking entire systems, or creating entire new ones. Just small adjustments here and there to what we have already in. In other words... a feature polish. :)
