DF General Discussion / Re: Crashing...
« on: June 29, 2019, 12:08:31 am »
I don't know, I haven't noticed any patterns.

Embark settings don't seem to have an effect. Both custom profiles and the "play now" one can have the bug.
How you gen the world doesn't seem to affect it either, short history, long history , big map, smal map, simple world gen, advanced world gen can all have the bug.
Changing fort/group 's names don't make any difference.
Sometimes after a number of tries to embark (to the same location) it might "fix" itself and just work as intended.

About LNP settings, I'm using the default except for the population caps, no intro, no sound, fps counter on and DFHack's Perfomance tweaks on. I'm using Phoeubus's set which I have installed manually because the preinstalled one is somewhat messed up and doesn't display the workshops properly.

There have been multiple references to this bug in PE's Starter pack thread, where someone (I don't remember who) suggested to disable twbt before embarking and it worked.

Is there any file/error log that could help you?

Sort of. For weapon/stone/upright spike traps it will generate a combat report, I 'm not sure about cage traps.

Depending on the yeast, fridge temperature can really halt their activity and thus stop the fermentation from happening. If that particular cider was relying on a secondary fermentation (inside the bottle) for carbonation then that might explain why it was flat. (But that contradicts the statement of the cider being ready).

Since it didn’t cause any trouble then all is well I guess.

A friend gave me a standard bottle of homebrew cider uh... a couple weeks ago?  I finally got around to cracking it open.  It's been in the refrigerator the whole time, so it won't have gone bad from light, but a different friend suggested it might have gone bad anyway?  Not sure why that would be, just slightly worried I guess.

It didn't have much pressure in the bottle, almost flat.  I tasted a little and it's kinda sweet and apple-sour.  My sense of smell is unreliable at best so I can't test it that way.

Is it supposed to be a hard cider (alcoholic) or soft cider (apple juice)?

It being sweet, means that whatever fermentation process might have happen didn't go all the way.
Being flat could be, because either it didn't ferment long enough to build pressure or the bottle wasn't properly closed and the CO2 leaked out.
I'm not sure about ciders but (AFAIK) when an apple goes bad it will either have a stronger apple smell or a strong sourdough smell (if something fermented it as it was spoiling).

Did you notice any side effects after tasting it? Did it have any noticeable alcohol?

Funneling the enemies to some sort of choke point is always a valid strategy, but your warriors will eventually get tired (even if the were extremely well trained). If you can postpone the actual fight, turtle up until you can create said choke point and
  • fill it with traps or
  • build a bridge to control how many enemies enter the battle area (so your dwarves can catch a breath between the waves) or
  • built a contraption to transfer water/magma to drown/burn them

If the above is not possible, arm every citizen with a weapon and shield and send them to their glorious death hope for the best.

Pushup variations have more to do with the positioning of the hands narrower/wider than anything else.

Yep, I was very much amazed when I figured out how even small variations in hand position change which muscles get to take the brunt of lifting the body. It's also the reason why I like push ups, it's such a utilitarian exercise.

Here's my alternative to either knuckle or palm pushups: dumbbell pushups.

I have a set of adjustable dumbbells which I use, but bit concerned about how stable they would be because the disks are rounded. I guess I'll just give them a try and go from there.

and you're not mashing your knuckles into the ground either.

Honestly, with the hand wraps it doesn't really feel that bad. They provide enough padding that I could say holding my weight on my fists was always quite comfortable. The only exception was when I would mess the wrapping a bit, resulting in some twisting of the band which would then feel like it's biting into the skin but it's was very easy to feel when that happens (sometimes even before you start doing the exercise) and it's also easy to fix.

Forearms typically don't get the attention they deserve in either the strengthening or stretching side of things, and consistently working on your wrist mobility will get them used to taking stress and ultimately get stronger.
This. I 'm thinking that ultimately my wrist just aren't use to this kind of stress.

You need to figure out what your daily, non-activity calorie requirements are.

That's one of the benefits of going to a nutritionist. I have a BMR of about 1860 kcal which gives an actual rate of ~2390 kcal/day when you put the weight loss projections into the equation. So I'm running on a ~390kcal deficit which feels just right for me right now. Though it'll hopefully raise as I intesify my workouts.

Lastly, I applaud your desire to lift weights so your body doesn't get loose from the fat loss. But really, you should be lifting weights to GROW muscle. And here's why.....Anyways, good luck, keep soldiering on.
Thank you :D The goal now is indeed to really start growing my muscles.

So rather than try to work around the injury, I decided to just compound the last two weeks of no working out due to work trips with just a general hiatus from working out altogether. My reasoning is, if my body is working to heal an injury then it probably won't help to do all my other workouts and place my body under stress while it's also trying to heal an injury.

Seems like a good call if you ask me. Going too hard right now probably puts too much strain on the rest of your body as it tries to compesate for your right knee. I hope you'll have a quick recovery.

Could be the fact I'm retaining more water so I look "fuller." (Although generally water retention makes you look fluffier.)

You might know it already, but I'm not sure if it was mentioned before in the thread.  Most of the muscle mass is actually water, known as intracellular water (ICW) and keeping a high level of ICW would in turn make your muscle look bigger and probably more defined. In addition to ICW there is also the extarcellular water (ECW) which while while it serves a lot of important functions having too much of it would result in a more bloated look. Again, to avoid any confusion, ECW is important for the body, and one should keep it at a good level to keep one's self healthy.

It could be that by taking a break you just give your muscle the chance to retain the water levels they actually need/want to have and in turn they increase their size.

Is this the train to Swoleville?

After hovering for MANY years at  88-93 kg, I'm finally at a stage where getting fit is slowly becoming reality.

I started a keto diet, on my own, back in December which while it was very effective in helping me drop from 87kg to 78 kg in about 3 months, it was ultimately a life style I couldn't realistically maintain. I was getting bored of eating the same 4 dishes all the time. So I tried to ease up and add carbs back in the menu.... aand within a month I was back at 81kg and struggling to keep it from going up.

In late May I made the decision to go to a nutritionist1 and today I'm happy to say I'm at 77kg,  18% of which is fat.

Meanwhile in the these 7 months, I started working out at home and getting myself comfortable with a 2-3 days per week regime. I didn't really do any heavy stuff (crunches, push ups, some dumbbell exercises and lots of walking), the goal then was to get myself to workout regularly and prevent my body from becoming loose from the weight loss. July is going to be one hell of month :D

Question time: Knuckle push ups or open palm?

I'm used to do them on my knuckles (using a set of hand wraps both as padding and for the extra support on the palm's bones and wrist) because doing them with open palm feels like it puts too much strain on my wrists. However  the vast majority of videos/articles on push ups say to use open palms and any article more specifically about knuckles vs open hand is always full of "martial artist use knuckles because it resembles the act of punching" or some other mumbo jumbo bullshit without giving any convincing explanation of which one to prefer and when.

1. If anyone is interested in it I could post my nutrition plan, it's for about 2000 kcal daily intake. Quick disclaimer: it's based on my needs and daily life so YMMV.

Current Goals:
  • Lose 2 more kg of fat
  • Set a more complete workout plan and focus on the muscles I have been neglecting so far.

P.S. I have to say that reading this thread over the months has been a good source of motivation

It's a known issue with TWBT. The only workaround (that I know of) is to disable*  it before you embark, embark, save your game, close DF, enable TWBT again and load your fort.

*In LNP's launcher under the graphics tab, find the "print options" and change it to something othar than TWBT.

Probably heard you were having an awesome pool party down by the magma forges. It would be quite impolite to refuse them, don't you think?

Some people like to travel in groups. It's more fun that way I guess.

Dwarf Fortress/data/init/d_init.txt

Set the visitor cap to whatever you like. Works with already genned worlds too IIRC.

My guys refuse to equip weapons, specifically halberds.
.
.
.
Any ideas?

Lower the [MINIMUM_SIZE:X] requirements of the weapons themselves, to your race's lowest average (or to a specific caste's average if you don't want all of them to be able to use them) in the raws. I'm not sure whether you can do this in an already existing world or it needs a new one.
  • In Dwarf Fortress/raw/objects/creature_custom_race.txt (or some other similarily named txt in the raw folder) look for the appropriate [BODY_SIZE:X:Y:Z] line for the adult creatures. "Z" will be the creatures average size when reaching aulthood. More info on creature tokens here.
  • Dwarf Fortress/raw/objects/items_weapons.txt is the general direction path. Changing this will affect only new world created after the change.
  • Dwarf Fortress/data/save/regionX/raw/objects/items_weapons.txt is for the already existing worlds. The "X" in "regionX" will be a number (1,2,3,..) and each of the worlds you have generated will have it's own region folder.

I’ve dig up my old copy of Machines: Wired for War. It’s an old RTS from 1998 (iirc). Gameplay is mostly the basic build base - find resources - research tech- build army BUT you can also take direct control of a single unit and control it FPS style allowing “sneaky” tactics (or ai/weapon range abuse if you will). It also has some killer voice acting.

Mount and Blade: Warband.

I think I’ve done something to it, though - because now there’s the option to enlist in a lord’s army as a soldier, all the training maps are much different, and battles have more options than “Charge”, “Auto-resolve”, and “Run away”.

I think this is all part of a mod that tries to make sieges less unpleasant.

These are the Freelancer and Pre battle orders & deployment mods which are included in most mod packs are both excellent additions imo to the vanilla experience. I don’t want to spoil too much but you’ll get some more options as you raise your tactics skill.

I’m not sure about the training area one.
