DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Bug or Feature?

Okay then I'm guessing it's a bug and not a feature. I'll go write a bug report in the other forum.

Nope, still a different person.

I made a groomed noble with:

5 Miner
1 Judge of intent
1 Appraiser
1 Record keeper
1 Organiser
1 Engraver

And the expedition leader et al is my Mason with:

5 Mason
1 Engraver
3 Mechanic
2 Architect

This is getting really frustrating. o.o

No dice. I tried restarting but this time it was a 5/5 miner/stone detailer, and my groomed noble has:

4x Appraiser
2x Judge of Intent
2x Organizer
2x Record Keeper

This fort is kinda messed up too. My dwarves starting location was on top of a cliff 14 levels above stream-level, and there's no ramps down for like nine or ten levels. o.o

Edit: I'll try what you said, FullMoon, and see if that works.

I normally do a full-on noble with only noble-skills, and then set him to do Stone Crafting without prior skill. As well I take two miners, a farmer/brewer, a mason, a carpenter/logger, and a hunter/butcher/tanner/leatherworker.

The noble becomes the mayor and keeps the books and everything, and the hunter usually becomes the captain of the guard. I like to have them both dedicated to their jobs when the fort gets a bit bigger, since new dwarves usually take over their old jobs. I'll try it with the miner but I'm not sure who I'll make for my extra person, if a miner is a noble. ^.^;;

I usually make my mayor fully dedicated to his job,

That's probably it. I think my previous ones had a single skill that was maxed out.

DF Gameplay Questions / Bug or Feature?

I'm posting this here 'cause I haven't been playing Dwarf Fortress long enough to know if it's supposed to happen.

Okay, I just got done installing v0.27.176.38c and putting together a new world. I set up my dwarves with all the stuff I like to take with me.

Now here's the thing. I like to have a dedicated leader/mayor so I usually set up one Dwarf with a bunch of noble-type skills. I had read that the Dwarf with the most related skills is made the expedition leader. Last time, with the version just previous to this one, I ended up having a miner be the leader instead of the groomed noble. The new edition came out today and I figured 'heck, I didn't like how this started...' plus there was a bug causing my guys to keep dropping stuff at the entrance to my fortress, and gave the latest version a try.

I thought that last time the miner might have been made leader because I gave him some Architect skill, and I read that was a noble type skill on the wiki. This time I made sure only the groomed noble had noble-type skills, but the leader ended up being my group's Hunter instead.

He has a bunch of skills, but none noble type. He's got a point in animal care and a point in animal training, a point in buchering, tanning, and leatherworking, a point in armor-user and he's got a couple points each in ambusher and markswarf.

Was it merely coincidence that my second and third forts had the groomed noble as their leader? Is it a bug that the groomed noble is not the leader now?

in this instance I'm not sure it's going to make much difference, my seven dwarves spawned next to a lake with four different types of humanoid monsters. o.o

That's neat, but I'll have to be careful with my digging!

DF Gameplay Questions / Hidden Underground War?
« on: February 18, 2008, 10:05:00 pm »
Alright this is getting a bit strange. I'm using v 27 176 38a and when I first started my fortress there was a cave-in, which happened in some underground cave I guess, and killed a snakeman. I just checked the population page, or whatever it's called, that has all my dwarves and livestock and the wildlife, and it's gradually filling up with dead frogmen.

Is there some kind of secret underground war going on? o.o

I think you can make a pit trap full of kittens and drop the kobold thief into it though.

I read before that if you empty a murky pool and leave it, it'll gradually fill up from the rain. Is that true? I built a ramp down into the floor of the murky pool after it emptied, and built a new constructed floor over the hole. I'm curious if the whole thing will fill up again. ^.^;;

The water wasn't too bad, it's mostly an inconvenience and a mess. The hole opened up above one of my large stairways so there was plenty of drainage down to the bottom floor of my fort, and then it just spread out a little in the hallways between the dwellings.

DF Gameplay Questions / Removing Construction Removes Natural Floor?
« on: March 25, 2008, 04:58:00 pm »
I wasn't sure what would happen when I removed that constructed wall on the third floor of my fortress... It was built underneath a murky pool on the surface, and I noticed that oddly when I had the designation tool on, it showed the floor in that pool as a 'construction'...

I decided that I could either be scared and be wrong, or test it and risk the water coming in.

Sure enough, the water is coming in. I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen? I dug out the corridor before and built constructed walls. I guess it makes a sort of sense, since when you build a constructed wall on one floor, you get a 'floor' on the next floor. I'm just surprised it replaced the floor that was there previously, when you can dig out an area without removing the 'floor' above it.

Oh well, I just wanted to point that out, and make sure it was proper, now I'm gonna watch my fort flood... Fortunately I don't think it should be enough water to do any serious damage...

DF Bug Reports / Cavern Collapse at Beginning of Map
« on: February 18, 2008, 06:06:00 am »
I just finished installing the latest version and loading up a new world and everything. As soon as my dwarves arrived in their new home I got a message saying "A section of the cavern has collapsed!" and my screen was zoomed into someplace still covered by 'the fog of war'... In other words, there were unstable constructions pre-built on the map when it loaded.

DF Bug Reports / Check Chest
« on: February 29, 2008, 07:39:00 am »
I'm on my second year with version 0.27.176.38c and I was watching my expedition leader while he was trying to conduct a meeting with the Hamlet Liason, and something strange kept happening.

I have him set with all the gather tasks turned off, as well as any profession tasks. He stands around in his office/throne room with his current task reading 'Conduct Meeting' and the liason right next to him, then suddenly for no apparent reason he switches jobs to "Check Chest" and runs off to one of my other dwarves bedrooms, or an unoccupied bedroom, and takes a look at their cabinet or coffer, then runs back. This only takes a few seconds 'cause he's rediculously speedy compared to my other dwarves, but I don't see why he's doing it at all? There doesn't seem to be anything in the chests, or wrong with them, and they don't specifically belong to him, AND he has better things to do. What's going on here?

I wasn't using the mouse. I've never actually used the mouse with Dwarf Fortress. o.o

DF Bug Reports / Something Happened While Paused
« on: February 25, 2008, 11:28:00 pm »
I had my game paused, and I was setting dig orders for a new fortress when suddenly at the bottom of the screen I got an announcement that one of my cats had adopted one of my dwarves.

I was under the impression that these sorts of things didn't happen while the game is paused. o.o

Edit: Oh yeah, important. v0.27.176.38c
