DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Doing what the Nobles Want

The Baron takes over some of the Mayor's duties, but doesn't do much. The Baron Consort doesn't do anything but keep the Baron happy. I'm pretty sure they're planned to do more things eventually. Maybe they'll be the ones in charge of sending armies around with the army arc?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Breeding in captivity

Well, I definately want to retrieve them. The idea is to breed a whole mess of cows or other critters, for their leather.

So, if I put them into an animal pit, they won't sit around with a big question mark trying to pathfind their way out? That sounds perfect.

Here's another question on this subject; if animals in cages don't breed with eachother, what about animals on chains/ropes?

I'm still trying to figure out a good way to keep my non-pet animals out of my feasthalls without turning off the 'hang out' option. I tried putting them in a room and setting the only exit to animals can't pass, but they would just stand there with a flashing question mark trying to pathfind out of the room to get back to the feasthalls, and would eventually escape by going through a door when a dwarf went in or out.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Smelting

Nevermind, I missed the bit where magma smelters still require coke  >:(

That's just silly that you need fuel when you have LAVA

It's just for making steel. Steel is just iron with a high carbon content, and you get that from adding the coke. You need less fuel since you don't use any coal for heat, just for carbonizing, but you still need some.

DF Bug Reports / Re: [39e] Strange Construction Problem
« on: July 27, 2008, 01:40:42 am »
Ahh, it's happening again. Early on I had told my guys to build a wall around the nearest Murky Pool, which the fisherdwarves had started using for their fishing. I thought I'd make it a nice outdoor walled garden. But a couple of the wall fragments suddenly were cancelled 'cause the rock meant to build them had been used by something else.

There's still a bunch of wall parts waiting to be built, I bet some of them have also had their rocks stolen. I made a copy of my whole dwarf fortress folder and put it in a zip file, since I'm not sure how to get 'just the save'. How should I send it to you?

I've actually gotten to digging them in particular shapes. I'm not sure how you guys draw things on this forum but I bet it's hard.

I start with a 3x4 foyer, which has double-doors leading to the hallway and double-doors leading into a 5x4 throne room. Theres a single door in the foyer that leads to a 4x4 dining room, and the dining room has a single door that connects to a 4x4 bedroom. The whole thing is in the shape of a square. A staircase in the foyer goes to the civic building attached; that's the catacomb, the prison, the vault, or the dungeon master's lair. The City Hall and Justice Building expand on that by having another 4x4 dining room and 4x4 bedroom on the other side of the foyer. For City Hall, those two rooms become offices. For the Justice Building they belong to the Hammerer.

If I can get my fort to last long enough I'm going to try having my Baron and Baron Consort share a bedroom and dining room. I don't know why they want to have their own individual dining room and bedroom, but I figure if they're good enough they won't mind sharing.

Ahh I figured it out, only one of the ranges had it's shooting direction set properly.

DF Gameplay Questions / Cave Spiders and Leaking Olms
« on: July 26, 2008, 10:38:49 pm »
This is the first fort I've had that had cave spiders in it. I'm a bit curious about the mechanics of vermin, now.

My fort has a couple of neat things on the map, which turned out to be really close together, and right where I was building my fort. The bottomless pit with the lava glob was obvious from the start, and I built next to it. The underground pool I discovered while my miners were digging out a housing block... which made it a really frustrating discovery, but interesting as well. I walled it up so the monsters couldn't get out, but a cave spider had already escaped and I started finding occasional spider webs in my fort.

There's a lot of spider webs around the pool, and the monsters don't seem to be interested in leaving the water so they don't break them.

My first question about these things is, do they work as real spider webs? As in, do vermin get caught in the webs and killed by the spiders? I've noticed miasma clouds appearing in regions of the bottomless pit where I can only see spider webs, and a number appear in a certain corridor in my fort. The corridor is just four blocks away from the underground pool.

So my other question is, are vermin calculated in larger areas than block-by-block? Along with the cave spiders and webs that occasionally appear just in that small area of corridor, I've seen a few olms appearing. It would make sense if the region around the water was spawning olms where it could, even though the pool is completely walled in.

What in the heck ARE olms anyway?

Well the thing is, even if the mandate can't be met I try to do it, and even if I fail, I let it happen. I have a big prison complex and always try to have as many ropes as the Captain of the Guards wants. Of course, my prisons are nicer than some people's housing units. I wonder, if I put beds next to the chains, would the prisoners use them?

My last fort before this one, my mayor started making hardcore demands as soon as he got promoted. "Make Plate Mail!" "Make Sterling Silver Items!" "Make Three Plate Mail!" "Make Three Sterling Silver Items!" "Make an Anatomically Correct Sterling Silver Statue in my Bedroom!"

He actually died accidentally. Well, I mean, I didn't try to get him killed. The goblins did, so it wasn't really an 'accident' as much as a tragedy. And I was left with a ton of sterling silver, and a statue of the dwarven god of indecency in the city hall...

Instead of a big loose I let little tragedies happen and try to live with it.

DF Gameplay Questions / Archery Range Floor Space
« on: July 26, 2008, 08:51:28 pm »
I've never had this problem before, but my Marksdwarves dwarves are throwing this announcement "name cancels Shooting at Archery Range: No Floor Space." What does that mean?

There are currently three completed archery targets in the range, out of ten that are under construction. There are a lot of stones on the ground, but that's it, otherwise the room is empty. It's a 14x10 room. Each archery range is declared as its own room, which takes up 11x10 of the room; it makes the dwarves stand past the door when they shoot, instead of shooting through people walking into the room.

It only seems to happen when another dwarf is using the archery range, but it keeps repeating as they keep trying. Then they go back to the ammo stockpile and try to put their arrows back in a bin, but cancel that job because the item is misplaced. I just saw them run to my wood crafter's shop to pick up some bolts that hadn't been delivered yet, ignoring the bolts that were in the ammo stockpile next to the archery range.

What's going on? At first I thought maybe it was because of the stones on the floor, maybe I should report this as a bug?

DF Gameplay Questions / Do Coal Floors Burn?
« on: July 26, 2008, 08:10:03 pm »
I've read that Coal Walls will catch fire and burn ferociously. Will Coal Floors do that? I mined out a lot of fort but some of it is located in stone that used to be coal. I replaced the coal walls with constructed walls, but should I replace the floors too?

Not that I'm expecting any fires, but just to be on the safe side, you know?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Doing what the Nobles Want
« on: July 26, 2008, 07:59:05 pm »
Everybody is always talking about their Noble-killing devices and it's got me wondering...

Does anybody other than me ever try to do what the Nobles want?

I find it rather inspiring. In my last couple forts I made a whole 'city hall' for the Mayor to live in, and built my catacomb underneath. There's even offices for in case I decide to have my mayor and broker/organizer be different dwarves.

The Captain of the Guard and the Hammerer get to share a house, and the prison is built underneath.

I build single mansions for the Tax Collector and the Dungeon Master. The Tax Collector gets a house with a money vault underneath it for storing my fortress's coins, and a smaller vault for guarding unused artifacts. The Dungeon Master gets some cages, for when I eventually get beasties for him to coddle, and his own personal kennels, to practice animal training.

I always try to keep stocks of my noble's favorite materials on hand, so that I can fulfill their demands. It adds a lot of direction to my forts that wouldn't be there otherwise.

Another more traditional method of breaching a moat is filling it in. It can be pretty harsh when the enemy is raining arrows down on you, but it works. In a castle you would use siege ladders to climb the walls, but for a subterranian city you're in for some crazy stuff.
