DF Bug Reports / Re: [39e] Strange Construction Problem
« on: July 25, 2008, 11:25:45 pm »
I'm afraid it's already sorted itself out by this point. I don't really know how to save a save either. If it happens again I'll try and look it up.

It was definately slipping job items out of a construction jobs, and allowing me to use them again. I only built three beds, even though it said I had five free ones. Two of the beds that were misappropriated were built in their proper locations, since the beds weren't taken and built somewhere else, and now I don't have any beds to build.

I couldn't think of a decent title for this weird problem.

When I started this fort, I brought an insane amount of wood, and built fourty beds for my barracks straight off. I set them to be built once my barracks was dug out, but since my dwarves were mostly busy doing their own thing they only planted a few of the beds.

Later on, when immigrants came, I had already dug out rooms for my nobles. I decided to check if I had any free beds, and it turned out I did; it said I have five beds. I decided I must have accidentally built more beds than I thought, and used three of the beds for some of my noble quarters.

The immigrants started building the many beds, they didn't have much else to do. The problem was, I started getting errors that said "Item nolonger exists." I quickly realized I really HAD only made fourty beds, and the three I had used on the noble quarters has somehow been 're-offered' for my building, even though they were already queued up for another building.

I also built a number of doors early on in my fort, but the dwarves never bothered putting them up. Only a couple of my original seven had furniture building on, and one of them was busy guarding my outdoor stash from kobolds. I'll see if the same problem crops up with those doors, now.

Edit: It just happened for one of the fourty tables in my barracks attached dining room; I had placed an 'extra table' in another room for my merchant to use as an office, but it wasn't extra after all.

If you use d to get into the designation menu, then o to get into the set traffic areas menu, you can make dwarves prefer certain paths.

The way pathfinding AI works is it evaluates the 'cost' of stepping in a particular spot, and takes the least costly path. The traffic areas options let you decrease or increase the cost of stepping somewhere. Though, even 'restricted' won't stop dwarves from stepping on that spot if that's where they're going, or if it's the only path.

It's usually a good idea to set the main 'roads' in your fortress to high traffic, so dwarves will prefer running along them instead of running through your workshops and getting in people's way.

DF Bug Reports / Re: [39e] Mysterious Falling Lava

I'm pretty new to bottomless pits, I never used a site find tool before one was added. But yeah, there was no volcano, no magma pipe, and no magma pool listed at the location I embarked on. I sorta wish there was, it has everything else I wanted!

The magma just 'appeared' in mid air, and fell down the pit, killing most of the monsters. Some of the magma fell off the side of the very high cliffy mountain, and burninated the grassy valley below. (thankfully missing my dwarves by about fourty cubes!)

I had this problem with 39e earlier today. It was definately a problem with the bottomless pit, the map didn't have a magma pipe on it, just a bottomless pit and an underground pond.

Somehow five of the antmen survived but the rest of the monsters are dead, and their names on the unit list are glowing like fire. XD

Oh interesting, but you have to set the tag, it's not on by default?

How does tree growth work in Dwarf Fortress? Do saplings just randomly spawn on ground where they can, or do there have to be other trees nearby to spawn them?

I'm worried about doing a clearcut in case it prevents new trees from growing.

Will tame but fierce animals like wolves or tigers get into fights with enemy troops, or will they run away like most pets?

And can you tame humanoids, like antmen?

The thing that was significant about those demons is that they were never worshipped by goblins, only dwarves and elves. Unless it doesn't record when a goblin worships a demon...

Okay this is pretty weird. I just genned a new world and found a nice spot with some interesting stuff... and one thing that is REALLY WEIRD.

There's a bottomless pit, right? But at the very top level, when the map started, there was lava. And nothing holding it up.

So, now there's a huge glob of inexplicable lava, falling very quickly down a bottomless pit.

It's probably going to kill all of the monsters that live there. ^.^;;

And yeah, there it goes. That much lava falling so fast lagged out my computer for a little bit but now it's mostly down the bottomless pit. There was some that spilled over the edge at first, but thankfully not onto my dwarves. The monsters in there are totally screwed, though.

In my last fort I had a turtle-shell crown, a morganite weapon rack, a cage made out of some kind of gemstone I forget, and a door, also out of a gemstone I forget.

I'd never had an artifact door before, it looked like a wall with a gemstone in it. XD

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Interesting Gods
« on: July 24, 2008, 02:05:36 pm »
Whenever I gen a new world I pop open the Legends screen and check out some of the major figures. Megabeasts, gods, demons, forces...

The Dwarves can have some pretty interesting gods. The animal gods are crazy. A few worlds ago one of the gods was a Fluffy Wambler.

Now I've got an evil Mountain Goat god named Nar. There's a demon named Oslo who is worshipped by a TON of dwarves instead of goblins.

I just found a neat one, Lim erkun, Lim "The Infinite Cat" He's associated with dreams.

In the same pantheon they've got Erong Crotchmolds, the god of depravity.

Actually now that I look at it, almost all of the gods in this pantheon are evil. Evil dwarves, who woulda thunk it? I wonder if they're also the ones worshipping that demon.

Here's another demon, Zakosp Ostangom Usmdas Orgu, who is worshipped by elves. This seems to be a very evil world. LOL

Anybody else have some interesting gods to share?

I read that if you lock critters in a cage together, they'll mate inside the cage. Also that they won't do anything else, so you'll get a lot of babies popping out of the cage.

I'm curious though, if you tame wild animals and put them in a cage, will the offspring be tame or wild?
