DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Magma Question
« on: June 25, 2022, 11:54:12 pm »
Does Magma burn through squares and walls and floors etc?  If I'm going to build a lava resevoir, do I need to make sure the entire magma channel and the reservoir is all completely magma safe to keep it from spreading?

Is there an easy way to get DF Hack not to run when starting up DF even though the files are installed?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarf Raids
« on: June 23, 2022, 08:53:51 am »
Do these ever work, was I wrong to send my Dwarves to raid?

I sent them out, they never came back.  I checked the wiki, it says this is sometimes a bug and to replace all the dwarves and delete the squads and then they should return.  I did that, they haven't returned yet.

Are raids just broken and sometimes actually means always?

DF Suggestions / Goblin Sieges
« on: April 11, 2018, 10:35:14 am »
Can you implement goblin sieges that show up on cavern layers?

Also can you implement Blizzard style goblins sappers that can blow holes in walls?  How you decide which walls they take out might be interesting.  Maybe have them hit raised bridges as first priority, then constructed/smoothed walls, then finally natural stone under certain circumstances that I'm not sure on right now.

It would also be fun if the cavern goblins behaved a little bit more like humans where they sat back and waited, however while they were waiting more and more goblins would show up and they just tossed a few trolls/goblins/sappers at your back door from time to time as the force grew to try to open up a hole.  Therefore you would be incentivized to go wipe out this threat before they grew too big, otherwise the goblins grow to massive horde size and then charge (hopefully now with defenses weakened from the troll/sapper runs)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Adamantine Industry
« on: April 11, 2018, 10:15:18 am »
So I'm working with adamantine for the first time and I'm having issues getting my dwarves to actually spend time making strands and wafers.

Anyone got any good tricks for making sure dwarves actually do these jobs efficiently?

Right now I have 3 magma smelters and 3 craftsdwarf shops next to each with a couple of nearby quantum stockpiles that will accept the adamantine ore and metallic strands.

I have queued up a standing order of constantly extract strands and constantly make wafers.

I have a mountain of dwarves not doing those jobs and 10 adamantine battle axes queued up waiting on wafers.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / The cavern got me
« on: April 01, 2018, 12:32:37 am »
So I chopped down a couple trees in a cavern and somehow 6 of my dwarves suddenly got stuck on the side of a wall, which turned into 1 fps as they couldn't find their way anywhere.  I am hoping some ramp/mining jobs I tossed near them will save them their fate (and me from mine).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Crashes are very frustrating
« on: March 30, 2018, 06:09:46 pm »
It would be nice if there was an autosave or some way to not lose hours and hours of play.

I guess I just need to remember to quit out every 60 min or so minimum.

Just loading back up and seeing all the stuff that is no longer accomplished..

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Found my first cavern
« on: March 24, 2018, 07:30:43 pm »
So I was digging deep and encountered a cavern for the first time in this game.  And I can safely say this is much more intense than anything I expected.  I immediately undesignated everything I had been building and then covered over the hole I had made while I contemplate how I'm going to approach this.  The cavern is huge.  40x50 squares wide on the top level (of what I can see), 11 z deep (again that I can see).  The most expansive levels are 100x100, and the bottom half are all filled with water.

Any recommendations on how to secure the entrance when breaching a cavern?  This seems trickier than above because I can't just easily toss a pit under my welcome mat.

I'm building a welcome mat over a pit.  How many z levels should I make it to ensure almost everything dies?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Complex drawbridge mechanics
« on: March 15, 2018, 10:19:37 pm »
So I have this idea, but I'm not sure it will work and I want to throw it out here:

I want to have two entrances to my fortress, one that is a 3 space wide caravan entrance with drawbridges on the same lever, while the other entrance is a 20 long, 2 wide tunnel that drawbridges line both sides and fold up against the walls of the tunnel.  I'm going to tunnel out like a 30z fall underneath this long tunnel.  Those drawbridges are on the same lever as the caravan route but opposite in that while one is down the other is up.

The 20 long tunnel is going to be the quicker route to my main hall.  The goal is that when a siege comes, I flip the lever, they pile up in the hallway and then I flip the lever again and they plummet to their doom.

Will this work?

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My first Siege
« on: March 13, 2018, 03:16:30 pm »
So I just got attacked by my first Siege, I'm playing on a fairly peaceful world and the first siege was ~15 goblin archers after I had gotten to around 175 dwarves.

My defenses were as follows:
-I had channelled a moat around my entrance area using the river cutting across the map and left only one bridge to get to the area
-I had built a road that goes down and below the straight path from bridge to entrance to my fortress
-I had 3 lines of traps in the straight line from bridge to entrance and then a horseshoe of cages around my entrance area
-Civilian alert was set to keep the population inside once a siege began
-I had 2 squads formed (although not great on training or equipment, still working on those nuances)

Upon the siege starting I set my civilian alert and military squads to defend my entrance and waited to see how this would go
-Goblins proceeded to slaughter everything and everyone outside (I had one dwarf that was unlucky enough to start right next to where they spawned and was shot down almost immediatly)
-Most of my livestock was just in pastures outside, need to figure out a better method to protect them in the future, the goblins killed almost everything moving
-Since I had so much livestock outside the goblins didn't path neatly through my traps, but I was lucky enough that they did end up sorta pathing through the area due to chasing livestock, a couple goblins injured from the stonefall traps and 11 trapped goblins.
-I then started the kill orders for my squads because the siege was broken up by then, only needed to really clean up about 3 goblins, and there is currently a 4th sitting in the moat in a place my dwarves don't want to path to if I give them a kill order

Overall
  -3 dwarves lost
-~20 livestock lost (although I wasn't really using them for anything yet, no leatherworks or butcher setup)
  -3 goblins killed, 11 captured, 1 drowning

I welcome any and all comments and suggestions.  Having a blast.

DF Gameplay Questions / Flooding Question
« on: March 09, 2018, 11:32:13 pm »
So I had a strange situation that I can't figure out so I was hoping someone can explain to me what happened.

1 - I dug a tunnel from a river that went down about 3-4 levels and ended in a large room, so basically just a 1 wide hallway leading into a large reservoir.

2 - I sealed said tunnel and reservoir so the only access would be swimming from the river.

3 - I build my hospital on the level above it

4 - I put a well in the hospital

5 - The first time someone was brought to the hospital and water was taken out of the well (this could have been coincidental timing), the entire hospital flooded and water ran straight up to the doors to the main dining hall, 7 deep, drowning everyone trapped in the hospital.

6 - I dug another tunnel/reservoir area to drain my hospital, once the initial water was removed it did not come back, and I removed the well for good measure.

My question, why did it flood in the first place, what should I have done differently?
