DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Wait, are you seriously telling me.....

Are we seriously going to let some SJW trolls bait us into defending our hatred for elves?  Elves have zero redeeming qualities and every bone in my Dwarven body knows they all need to die.

Well maybe I won't be so bad off then.  I'm really liking this overland map feature with all the sites around me.  And now I truly understand what people were talking about with sending out raids and explorations.  I thought I was going to have to wait for the dwarven liason to show up to stay before I'd get to try this out.

I just spent 2-3 weeks getting back into the game and learning it, reading the wiki only to find out I've been playing an old version because I downloaded a package that only included up to version 0.34.  Time to start the climb up the learning cliff again.
Whenever you look up a page on the wiki it automatically redirects you to the information for the latest version (it should have a DF2014: at the beginning of the title.) Which means that most likely you have been learning the newest version, not the version you downloaded by accident.
True, almost everything I've read has been about the latest version.  However, not everything can be learned about this game from reading.  I meant I had 2-3 weeks of play on a version that is not the current game.

That is so much more work than it takes to just put in two levers.

- I don't think you can have a lever send an "on" signal to one device and an "off" to another. "On" sends an "on" signal (which does nothing if the target device is already "on"). It's possible to make inverters through additional hookups, although I've never done it, so it can be achieved.

Hook up device 1, flip switch, hook up device 2. One is always on, while the other is off.

Or better, an arbitrarily large series of switches connected to one or both bridges and also random floodgates in noble rooms.

Yes this is the functionality I hoped existed and was planning, but I hadn't tested yet.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Complex drawbridge mechanics
« on: March 15, 2018, 10:19:37 pm »
So I have this idea, but I'm not sure it will work and I want to throw it out here:

I want to have two entrances to my fortress, one that is a 3 space wide caravan entrance with drawbridges on the same lever, while the other entrance is a 20 long, 2 wide tunnel that drawbridges line both sides and fold up against the walls of the tunnel.  I'm going to tunnel out like a 30z fall underneath this long tunnel.  Those drawbridges are on the same lever as the caravan route but opposite in that while one is down the other is up.

The 20 long tunnel is going to be the quicker route to my main hall.  The goal is that when a siege comes, I flip the lever, they pile up in the hallway and then I flip the lever again and they plummet to their doom.

Will this work?

For the ballistas, do they have to be dwarves in a squad that you order to man it, or is it just regular dwarves?  Hmm..maybe the wiki has something on them.

Is there noise alerting added to this game yet?  for example, if I build the open air walled pasture but the enemy paths nearby, will they hear the livestock on the other side of the wall?

Of the suggestions, I think I'm going to go with pasture walls just because gaming the system to build it underground seems a bit off.  I'd rather not take advantage of a strange bug that will probably eventually go away.

Thanks though for all the comments so far, they do help.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / My first Siege
« on: March 13, 2018, 03:16:30 pm »
So I just got attacked by my first Siege, I'm playing on a fairly peaceful world and the first siege was ~15 goblin archers after I had gotten to around 175 dwarves.

My defenses were as follows:
-I had channelled a moat around my entrance area using the river cutting across the map and left only one bridge to get to the area
-I had built a road that goes down and below the straight path from bridge to entrance to my fortress
-I had 3 lines of traps in the straight line from bridge to entrance and then a horseshoe of cages around my entrance area
-Civilian alert was set to keep the population inside once a siege began
-I had 2 squads formed (although not great on training or equipment, still working on those nuances)

Upon the siege starting I set my civilian alert and military squads to defend my entrance and waited to see how this would go
-Goblins proceeded to slaughter everything and everyone outside (I had one dwarf that was unlucky enough to start right next to where they spawned and was shot down almost immediatly)
-Most of my livestock was just in pastures outside, need to figure out a better method to protect them in the future, the goblins killed almost everything moving
-Since I had so much livestock outside the goblins didn't path neatly through my traps, but I was lucky enough that they did end up sorta pathing through the area due to chasing livestock, a couple goblins injured from the stonefall traps and 11 trapped goblins.
-I then started the kill orders for my squads because the siege was broken up by then, only needed to really clean up about 3 goblins, and there is currently a 4th sitting in the moat in a place my dwarves don't want to path to if I give them a kill order

Overall
  -3 dwarves lost
-~20 livestock lost (although I wasn't really using them for anything yet, no leatherworks or butcher setup)
  -3 goblins killed, 11 captured, 1 drowning

I welcome any and all comments and suggestions.  Having a blast.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Flooding Question
« on: March 10, 2018, 03:02:55 am »
Ah ok, so if I understand it correctly, what I should do in the future is put one of those diagonals in my feeding tunnel and then the water won't shoot up the well?

Thanks for the help.

DF Gameplay Questions / Flooding Question
« on: March 09, 2018, 11:32:13 pm »
So I had a strange situation that I can't figure out so I was hoping someone can explain to me what happened.

1 - I dug a tunnel from a river that went down about 3-4 levels and ended in a large room, so basically just a 1 wide hallway leading into a large reservoir.

2 - I sealed said tunnel and reservoir so the only access would be swimming from the river.

3 - I build my hospital on the level above it

4 - I put a well in the hospital

5 - The first time someone was brought to the hospital and water was taken out of the well (this could have been coincidental timing), the entire hospital flooded and water ran straight up to the doors to the main dining hall, 7 deep, drowning everyone trapped in the hospital.

6 - I dug another tunnel/reservoir area to drain my hospital, once the initial water was removed it did not come back, and I removed the well for good measure.

My question, why did it flood in the first place, what should I have done differently?
