DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Not Stockpiling Wood
« on: January 27, 2008, 11:53:00 am »
I have a question though. Why won't dwarves haul stuff away from the trade depot? I thought it was coincidence When I saw the wood stockpile empty, a trade depot filled with all sorts of logs next to it and 20 idle dwarves next door.

Oh I read the goblin entry on the wiki but I never saw that   :D Well, they also attacked 3 bands of thieves on the way... That's interesting isn't it? xD

Holy crap, this one deserves another topic I think.

I was attacked by goblins twice in the same year.

Wait, here's the kicker.

There's a human mace lord WITH THEM!

Still not enough? He's a RULER!!!! He's LEADING THEM!!!!

DF Gameplay Questions / Kobold wars?
« on: January 24, 2008, 03:22:00 pm »
I just saw a Kobold bowman kill a fleeing Kobold. I think he was from another ambush squad or something, and I'm sure it was intentional because I had the "AMBUSH" warning, followed by a single shot which killed the other dude. Has this happened to anyone else?

The prospector told me there was a river here. And there ARE marmots... :S I can't seem to find it...

Thanks for all the help.. I'd like to play the newest version, it's just that i'd prefer playing on a map with everything I need  :) I heard all about glass making and such but on most my fortresses I can even find decent gems. I did find a nearly perfect map just about now though.  Only problem is the surface pool just dried up and I can find the river   :D Does anyone have any tips? Should I dig bellow pools or forested areas for it?

Having to go down Z-levels isnt a big deal... use 'h' to set hotkeys, you can zoom to your forges and main level very easily.  I too like my DF on easy-mode, so I can see where you are coming from.

Look for premade worlds that tell you where to build, that would be handy.</STRONG>

Thanks a lot for the tip  :) I would have never thought of that.

I think my hate comes from my old "Metal Fatigue" days... It was an RTS where you could fight on underground tunnels, the surface or in asteroids above the surface. Maybe fighting AIs with the ability to focus on all at the same time traumatized me xD I just hate knowing my dwarves could be doing major doodoo one level below me without my knowledge.

All I'm looking for is a map kinda like the ones I see of the 2D days. I HATE running around Z-Levels. I found a great map just now with everything I need except to reach the magma I need to dig around to -12. I'm not going to build ramps down there and/or pump magma to the surface. I'm just not.

Am I just having bad luck or does no one care about it?

54
Aargh It's still impossible to even find a place with magma, adamantium, chasms... Not to mention flat.

55
See title. I'm tired of looking around and finding the perfect spot, only to find small hills everywhere or my dwarves started inside a pit or something. My main objective is to find something kinda like boatsmurdered: Mostly flat on the surface, dig into a mountain, use a cave river and/or magma river or any other magma source.

Damn, I hate constantly changing Z-levels. It's annoying. I don't mind an underground tomb or basement, I just tire of spending hours paving the damned hills so the frigging merchants can find me.

And it's too bad because I've found tons of surface aluminum and a couple of gems so far... :/

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Reclaim Fortress: forbidden items issue

Mechanisms? I'm not sure about clothing since I never had enough storage but I did have a problem with mechanisms. I had about 10 lying around everywhere and they didn't even register as mine (had to make some new ones). I also had an untouchable goblin corpse, even dumping wouldn't remove it.

Did you make sure they're hanging? I sometimes forget about that

Clothes can take up a LOT of space, believe me. A single dwarf has 2 socks, pants,  2 shoes, a cap maybe, etc. Multiply by 1,5 if it's a military dwarf.

Sound annoying? Now take into account 1 tile = 1 sock.

I spent 2 years trying to gather all of the clothes to no avail. Maybe mass dump them or something... You can try to designate a large area like a hall of your tunnels as clothing storage and shove it all into the next caravan.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Can you train a hunter?
« on: January 21, 2008, 09:13:00 pm »
I've heard some players use their immigrants to hunt when elephants and other dangerous beast are on their fortress area. I've had a peasant (I think) hunt and unless I'm mistaken, he's been busy until we've cleared the whole biome of foxes.

Won't finding the hidden fun stuff turn it into just fun stuff?
