One that occurred to me- Deities already show up in relationship pages, why not have them occasionally have sibling or parent relationships with other deities of the same civ?  If it's just for flavour, cool, but bonus points if it affects the relationships of their believers too...

That would be interesting to explain to someone. You'd have to write it running widdershins up to the elbow just to see who'd catch it.

Wouldn't that depend which way you were facing?  *Trying and failin to wrap my head around it, here*

Anyway, you could always get it tattooed on your shins.

Thanks for correcting me, Capn.

The mouse-over text reads "And then a second one, to drain the sea." So I wouldn't rule it out just yet.
I don't know, XKCD has run with such ideas as turning anti-clockwise to reduce the Earth's angular velocity, thereby holding off the coming morning (one of the more emotional strips for me).  I wouldn't put it past them to touch on a giant pump to drain the seas without it having anything to do with DF.

Okay, I think we've reached a consensus here.  The hostile response was three or four posts on the first page when the whole topic actually did appear to be nothing but spam and even having established it's not spam, it's still slightly dubious.  Since then all discussion has been about the game itself, except for people jumping on the bandwagon three pages later to say 'I don't think it's spam, why are people so mean?'

The tame horse has been struck down.  Stop beating it and haul the corpse to the butcher.

From the context, I'm still fairly sure the ride thing meant two PCs, one of whom provides transport, in character, for the other.  The MUCK does have the feature you describe, though.

Food for thought: would the response to this thread have been more positive had Denisus said "Check out this new MUD that I found?"  And if so, why?

For the record, my response would have been, once I noticed that Denisius registered just to post this: "Lovely spaaaaaaam, wonderful spam!"- that is to say, disbelief.  I appreciate the honesty, which is why I take actually Den's word for it that he does play DF, since that's all we've got.  Which is in turn why I'm not calling spam, but still consider it a bit impolite for one's first, and for all we know only, activity within the community to be what amounts to free advertising for an entirely different one.  I don't think I've been particularly nasty- just calling it as I see it.

I do take back any comments about the MUD itself, though.  I don't MUD any more, and knowing that I won't get into it, I'm not going to put in the time it would take to learn enough to comment fairly.

All that aside, most of ductape's troubles seem to stem from unfamiliarity with MU*s (understandable after so long).  Explaining all the concepts and systems involved neatly is a mammoth task which different games handle with varying levels of success.  I've seen such things partially alleviated elsewhere with newbie channels, active greeters and the like.

Incidentally, if anyone is interested in other options for text roleplay I can recommend a very good MUCK that I used to play, and still would save for the nefarious influences of real life.  A MUCK is a bit like a MUD, but with no mobs (code-controlled monsters), pre-set quests or code-driven combat- everything is driven by interaction with other players and the code is a minimal backdrop to it, meaning it's roleplay, rather than roleplay-encouraged.   With appropriate areas for OOC silliness, of course.
In this particular one, characters are created around the core concept rather than pre-set races, so pretty much anything goes.  When I was there, one character was a (player-created) Transformer, one was a twisted eyeball monster with very good manners, another was a human mind controlling a bunch of tiny fairies instead of a body, others were elves, vampires, knights, mechanics, angels, zombies, humans, robots et al.  Rats conquering kingdoms and player-character mounts (no sex jokes please, we're British) are both entirely possible if played out well.

McDoomhammer, I've been playing DF for about half a year now, I have lurked for that entire time.

That's as may be- your post had nothing to indicate anything of the sort, so you can see why people would draw the spam conclusion.  I would go further and suggest that it doesn't matter whether it's true or not, de-lurking only to advertise is no different than signing up out of the blue.

No, but it is theoretically possible to have Deathwhisker, a rat mage, get yourself a lair, and summon a horde of female rats to...  serve you.

Among other things.

... Thaaaat's not really helping your case.

At least as far as I'm concerned, anyway, but then I'm a MUCK person.

I'm somewhat torn.  On the one hand, the MUD seems genuine if nothing special other than the scale, and the OP has done the courtesy of watching the topic, unlike your average spammer.  On the other hand, he would appear to have joined entirely to pimp his own stuff, which most people consider inappropriate and at least a little rude- there's a difference between discussing something among fellow members of a community and advertising in a space not set aside for it.

And no, "it's not against the forum rules" is not the same as "that's what it's there for".

You would have to be good to lose no agents at all on the harder difficulties.  Especially when thsy start showing up with the advanced alien weaponry of doom.  Unless it was done by judiciously running away a lot.
