if you want it to not overflow you just have to time it right so you cut off the waterflow with floodgates just as it has filled your moat/river/pond ect.

i would say that the aquifer snap freezes them as they dig into it try digging channels from the above level then carving a staircase down and walling off the ice which will turn into water as summer/spring comes (depending on biom) you must have an open ceiling for this to work so it will forever be considered above ground. this is the best way i have found to get past an aquifer.

i was just wondering if its normal because i've heard before somewhere that wild animals don't breed. these were untrained by the way and they breed like crazy having 1 litter of 2-3 children per year i had 3 pages of gorilla children by the end of year 4 when i abandoned this fortress.

i have managed to breed gorilla's in captivity. i do not know if this is unprecedented or whenther it is a common occurance although they seem to be squeezing out gorilla children all the time (old picture) i currently have nearly a page full of them and its only a year after this screenshot.
   
please note that they ARE in cages with their mothers and i am yet to test them in pits.
so has anyone else come across this?

yeah ill try that on my next fort maybe but if you looked at the last post i had to end it as my framerate dropped to 1-20 when it WAS 140. this happened just suddenly and i do not know why.

im sorry but im going to have to pull this to a very abrupt end as i just took a massive hit to my fps (the unplayable kind) which is understandable with 14.5 thousand stone just hanging around long with nearly 100 caged gorillas i have uploaded the save for anyone who is interested in seeing what i actually did.

I am currently halfway through this project. it is to tunnel up above the cavern them come back down on the outer wall then create crevaces in the wall which will house one coffin each. as i fill the coffins i will wall them up from behind. I am also toying with the idea of placing statues in the walls also although possibly on alternating z levels all tunnels to the tombs will be lined with statues and as the rest of the city engraved fully.

thankyou for those suggestions im thinking of taking on the arch one. it will possibly be 10-12 z levels high with every surface engraved like the rest of the city comming up from the depths of the cavern with cages hanging off it and possibly pressure plates below on the causeway that when triggered will open the arch up and drop water (or kittens possibly even gorillas since i have nearly 100 of them now) on the incoming goblins.
oh and ill be filling the bottom 2-3 z levels with water (sadly no underground water source)

after four years and 3 deaths (hunter previously mentioned, insane jeweler and one squished cook) i have finally hollowed out one side of the entrance level of the great cavern (through one single support and a helluva lot of dust.)
z level -5

z level -6

z level -7

with 11618 raw stone (still counting) and nearing 1000 blocks i need some suggestions for above ground constructions now. I have a vertical stairway ready to be used in the center of my city that reaches all the way up to -1 so any and all suggestions are welcome.
on another note the reservoir is nearing completion at the top of the city.

might be a fun way to kill this fort though.....

this is turning out to be a very good fort in itself along with being an engineering marvel as i have struck two huge clusters of magnetite, one large vein of bituminus coal and one unknown length of lignite. i hope to have a steel works up and running as soon as i get an anvil.

yes ill be pumping it all the way back up and dumping it back in the fort wen i need to and ill be restricting the flow with floodgates.(im not THAT stupid XD)
