"One more thing," you add, before Trovan can turn to leave. "I have taken five pirates alive— they work for me now, maimed according to Ræbbegotten law. If Gæginas wants them back, I will expect him to pay ransom."

"You assume much of my commander," smirks Trovan. "Still, I'll pass the message on. Perhaps he'll be gracious."

The pirate proffers some parting pleasantries, then follows Ervin outside. Somewhere in the rooms behind you, a guard forces your captives back to the logyard.

1251 AD, Early Summer

Mackerel season! Merchant caravans roll again into New Codhollow, to trade for fresh fish.

A) Schmooze!
B) Sleep.

They're gonna give us more tools, a manual, that sort of thing. Better to stay clear for now… we'll read up on station maintenance afterward, and maybe we can help out the next time these folks visit.

When I played DF four years back, I liked to call my legendary weapon lords "superdorfs"… so when it came time to pick a name, I just went with that. No regrets.

((You've basically been using them as slaves for various rebuilding projects around the city. Between that and the initial maimings, it's safe to say they're not happy campers at the moment.))

You consider the pirate's words in silence.

Soothed by the music of terrified men, you opt for mercy.

"Here is how it will be, velvet man," you purr, settling back onto your dais. Trovan raises his head, listening hard. "You will return to Gæginas. You will tell him that I refuse his 'protection'— that I offer no tribute to him. You will tell him, indeed, that I offer protection: while his vessels dock here, I myself will ensure their safety from the empire. In return, he will bring me rich treasure, fine things from over the sea."

"If his men have need of provisions," you add, with a satisfied flick of your tail, "they may purchase them from us as the merchants do. Our salt cod is clean, our prices fair."

"...you make a fine offer, lady ZENDRAKIEL," says Trovan, lifting himself back onto his feet. "And a terrible threat, I must admit." He grins again, ruefully. "I see why your people respect you."

"I'll see to it," he continues, "that your proposition reaches Gæginas' ear. He has never heard such an offer before, understand— only a creature like yourself could chance it." The pirate bows, then dons his hat again. "You'll have your answer from us in the fall, one way or another."

You nod, stifling a contented rumble in your throat.

Only one thing left to settle now… do you mention your pirate captives before Trovan leaves?
A) Nah.
B) Yes, but don't give them up.
C) Yes, and demand ransom!
D) Yes, and pass them back to Trovan for free.

"Don't taunt me with your velvet— lies," you spit, rising to your full height, wings spread in anger. "I know your business. Gaeginas is no merchant, but a king among thugs." You creep to the edge of your dais, your eyes afire, your scales rattling with heat. "What is the truth, velvet man? What can you offer me save your own death?"

Quote

That does it. The shipcaptain cowers on both knees, his hat in his shaking hands. Behind him, his bodyguards whimper in undisguised terror. Even your own guards seem taken aback.

"You are right, lady, you are right— of course you are right," says Trovan. "My commander is king over pirates, because he is the greatest pirate of them all: an enormous, terrible man! He protects cities like yours from his own fleets, pillages those he cannot bind in tribute! He sent me here, because— because—"

"Speak." You flap once, sending a gale of hot air through the hall.

"—you slew his own men, my lady!" Trovan gasps, breathing hard on the floor. "Baron Harthy, he was late on a payment, bad fishing season or some such… Gaeginas sent ships to teach him a lesson. How was he to know the Baron was dead, and you his conqueror?"

"Your swimmer saw me take the ship whole, and you surmised I was guardian here."

"A lucky guess," quavers Trovan. "Gaeginas sent me in parley— I mean you no ill! There are many things that may be gained, from an alliance with the corsair king. Offer provisions for his enterprise, and he will keep watch over your city. Grant safe harbor here to his ships, and he will bring treasures from across the Arran Sea! Are you so beloved by the empire, lady, that you'll blind yourself to these favors?"

A) Your corpses and your ship are all the favor I need!
B) I've no interest in these things.
C) Provisions you will have, but your ships are not welcome here.
D) Safe harbor and trade you will have, but we offer no free meals to you.
E) Very well, let's talk about both these favors.

"...well met, Trovan of Gæginas," you murmur, a subtle sibilance laid over your words. You rise slightly to stare down the newcomers; two of the pirates step back despite themselves. "I must admit, we hold little welcome in our hearts for seafaring strangers at this time. It is just this past winter we were attacked, you see, by pirates: cruel, heartless men." You let a little hurt creep into your voice. "What was I to do? I gave chase, of course… found them easily enough. Their captain was dressed rather like you, can you imagine that?" You lean forward, locking eyes with the velvet-clad man.

"I slew him myself."

Trovan's eyes widen in barely-concealed alarm, and he hastily drops to one knee. "Hsst!" he says to his bodyguards, and staggering, they follow suit.

"Forgive my impertinence, lady ZENDRAKIEL," says Trovan. "And understand, my visit here is no coincidence. Some hours after you killed that pirate, one of our ships chanced across an underling of his: a survivor you cast into the water, who, being a child of Gost, swam clear of the corpses of his fellows. We questioned him, and learned everything. Gæginas Merchant-King thought it best that I pay your city an early visit."

"Gæginas has been here before, then, has he not?" you hiss. "Yes, I know he consulted with the old Baron. What was their business, that you should be so concerned for the health of my city?"

"Ah… protection, lady," says Trovan, with that hungry grin again. "Gaeginas, you see, has some sway over the less savory elements of the Arran Sea. He cannot destroy piracy in these waters entirely, but for a modest fee, he can nudge such evils away from a town like yours. Baron Harthy was wise, and made ample use of Gaeginas' services. In exchange, the Baron paid only a few fish each year: provisions for our vessels."

"He was a fool, then," you snap. "Where was your protection when my people were slaughtered?"

"That would be the question," says Trovan, with an exaggerated sigh. "This winter's attack was unacceptable. We will not ask tribute from your people this fall for our service, and we will continue to defend you from marauders until that time. I will return after the smoking festival, and we will discuss a renewal of our pact… unless, of course, you would like to do so now." He raises an eyebrow expectantly.

A) Sure, let's negotiate.
B) No thanks; goodbye. (diplomatic dismissal)
C) Get out. (intimidation)
D) His guard is down; let's gut him!

"Let the shipcaptain speak with me here," you say. "Bring our pirate captives in from the jails, and the skull from the gibbet. Keep them ready in the wings, for now." Ervin gives orders to his guards, and departs to fetch your visitor.

A few minutes later, a tall man in flamboyant velvet strides into your hall: a falchion and buckler at his belt, and a short-sleeved maille shirt under his jacket. Six men flank him, armed in similar fashion. Behind the pirates, Ervin keeps watch with three of his guards.

The chief pirate bows when he reaches the edge of the pit before your dais, doffing his feathered hat… he rises, grinning. "Lady ZENDRAKIEL, your captain of the guard has mentioned your name already - you're well respected here, it seems, and rightly so! I am Trovan, shipcaptain and spokesman under Gæginas, who is king of merchants on the Arran Sea. We have been a friend of your city for some thirty years now, and wish to pay our respects to the new baronness… and perhaps, to learn where matters stand with her." Trovan's grin fades to a hungry smirk.

You already hate this man.

A) "Well met." (diplomatic discourse)
B) "What do you want?" (tactless, straight to the point)
C) "Get out." (intimidation)
D) You know what, I really want to kill this man and his goons after all.

Your DRACONIC NATURE quails at the sacrifice of your HOARD, even part of it… you resign yourself to the demands of LEADERSHIP, for now.

"...very well," you say, rising from your dais a little. With a careful sweep of your tail, you separate a third-portion of the coins from your HOARD before settling down again. "Use this to repair our city. The taxes, and our guard force, will remain as they are this year."

Lucias' eyes widen. He mumbles his gratitude, then sends for workmen to remove the allocated coin.
You refrain from biting their heads off.

Trumpets from the docks.

"Gæginas the 'corsair king' is here," says Guardcaptain Ervin as he enters your hall. His voice is tense, his eyes narrowed. "Or at least, one of his ships. The old Baron used to consort with him in the fall, every six or seven years. He's early."

"More pirates?" you hiss. "Must I burn every ship on the Arran Sea? I'll kill him myself."

"I would be careful, my lady," says Ervin. "Gæginas' title is not for nothing. He offers protection from other pirates to those who offer him tribute, and ruin to those who refuse. We mostly gave him fish."

A) "Let him enter my hall."
B) "Go and speak to him yourself."
C) "Turn him away, with force if needed!"
D) !!I've slaughtered one pirate captain this year; might as well make it two!!
