...?!

Quote from: Hasty Wikipedia search, followed by some etymology googling
The name "chrysanthemum" is derived from the Ancient Greek: χρυσός chrysos (gold) and Ancient Greek: ἄνθεμον anthemon (flower).

I dunno where you're getting this

You gently land some distance from the imperials, and call out your intentions.

A couple soldiers mutter to each other, goggle-eyed. "Is it serious?" "How the *@&# did they..."
Still, they're grinning despite themselves-- hopeful. A teenage squire runs to find the captain.

The captain is a battered old warrior, heavily-built with a heavier mustache. He gestures now to the castle, glancing your way as he speaks.

"Castle Grebbish is high up, see," he explains, "so's to overlook the mountain pass. If we held that, we could take the town from both ends-- but the north gate's well fortified. Our best shot before you got here, was to force our way through the streets and get in by the undergate."

He spits. "It's a %@*! of a shot. You could really turn things around here."

"What do you want of me?" you ask.
"Well now. The way I see it, we've got a couple options."

A) You fly up to the castle, and tear your way through. Once the building's clear, you blow open the gate; half the army plunges through and takes the town from both ends. Dangerous for you, and the castle itself would take a beating.

B) While a contingent of knights holds down the town, you take a group of soldiers and assault the castle by way of the north gate. Once the gatehouse is clear, you'll offer whatever fiery support you can while they clear out the smaller halls... less dangerous for you and easier on the castle walls, but a good few soldiers will die in there.

C) The captain evacuates his men from the town entirely, and you fly over to purge it. Once it's clear, the soldiers will have a foothold straight into the guts of the castle-- they'll storm through, and you'll play support. Minimally costly for the imperial army... but if there's any surviving civilians in the town, they won't last long in a full-on dragon strike.

?) "But then, maybe you've got ideas of your own. I hain't never sent a dragon into war before."

You decide to take down some outliers before you move in to fulfill your pledge.

They never see it coming.

You get up real high, plunge-- careful to keep on the blindside of any watchful lopers-- and FWOOOSH. An entire camp's worth of raiders falls to ashes in an instant, and you fade back into the clouds to find another.

Quote
4+1

Your fear precedes you, once you've wiped out a few camps: the lopers break into panicked routs, scattering in the general direction of the castle. You dive in and out, hurling fire, letting a mad, flame-distorted cackle rip through the sky. Your enemies fall to pieces-- soon there's only a few terrified survivors in your wake. You loop around, and soon there are none.

What fun! Your siblings used to terrorize these creatures all the time back home.

You fly high over the castle, and the small town surrounding. Smoke rises from many of the buildings, and sounds of battle erupt from streets and side alleys. The castle stands silent, two or three lopers standing watch at each tower. Their hair is green; their spears are long.

Quote

Near what's left of the town gate, you see a sizable contingent of-- judging by their armor, and their bright-colored banners-- imperial knights and soldiery. Some of them are pointing at you, with fingers not weapons... for now.

A) !!To the castle, with fire and fury!!
B) Through the town, with tooth and claw!
C) Let's check in with the knights first.
?) Something else?

You appoint Captain Ervin as your steward, give speeches of GLORIOUS BATTLE in service of the EMPIRE, and take flight!

The journey is swift and silent, broken only by the occasional stop to kill a deer or roost for the night. As you approach the field of rampage, you're not above devouring the occasional dead horse on the roadside.

It's dawn of the sixth day, and you're beginning to see smoldering cottages and the tents of marauding lopers. You consider how best to make your presence felt.

A) Make straight for the castle, and purge it!
B) Seek out the imperial army, and offer your service!
C) Fly around the outskirts, taking out groups of raiders before they can do more damage.
?) Something else?

An idea springs into your mind, unbidden.
"There's a third option," you tell Cornelias. "Your little castle is taken by lopers? I'll kill them myself, and save my dear people the trouble."

The taxman frowns, thinking. "It's... unusual," he says. "Unheard of, even. But these are perilous times."
"You cannot afford to refuse," you whisper, and the room echoes. Your pupils dilate, rimmed with a brilliant blue.

"...you're right, of course," says the taxman, wide-eyed. His mouth hangs open a bit. "I-it's an unprecedented boon. I'll send word of your flight to the king."

You quickly obtain directions to Castle Grebbish from the shaken bureaucrat, and send him off with the usual pleasantries. A few minutes later, you hear the horns of the departing retinue.

Looks like you've got a journey ahead of you! The town's going to need someone in charge while you're away... you consider who to appoint as city steward.

A) Your ratty young secretary, Lucias. He's not the most authoritative figure, but he knows how the city works and he's not liable to start any trouble.
B) The head cleric, Myrre. A stern and fiery lady, she enjoyed a respectable position in the Baron's court... however, she doesn't like you very much after your meddling with Orrom Fish-god.
C) Dokker, fisherman. Very popular among his fellow-sailors, and one of the "lads" who threw the festival for you! He probably doesn't know much about governance, but he'd be well-liked.
D) Ervin, captain of the guard. In the case of your sudden disappearance, he'd be the default authority. You don't know much about his loyalties.

C!

"Go and speak to them," you say to your secretary. "Tell them the Baron is cast down. Tell them I am lady. I'll be along shortly."

The secretary scurries off; a few minutes pass in silence. You descend from your dais, and approach the taxman and his retinue with words of greeting.

Quote

A gasp rises from the imperials at your appearance, and a few guards step back with hands on swords-- but the taxman himself steps forward, his eyes gleaming with delight!

"You are magnificent, lady ZENDRAKIEL!" He's a tall man, richly-dressed with a pointed beard. "Your scales, they-- they burn like the dawn!"
"--I'm getting ahead of myself," he continues with an ecstatic bow. "I am Cornelias, and I have always wished to see a dragon."

What a charming and perceptive human! You invite him into your hall.

Alas, business is business.

"Lady ZENDRAKIEL, I will be blunt," says the taxman. "The Baron was a scoundrel, but he was a predictable scoundrel. You are not. In happier times, my king would send many knights to part you from your holdings and your life."

"In happier times," you murmur, eyes narrowed. "What stops you now?"

"We are at war," says the taxman. "Castle Grebbish has fallen to savage lopers from the north: even now, they lay waste to field and thatch! My king cannot afford the loss of a barony, nor the soldiers to recapture it, when an alliance may be had."

Lopers-- you remember the loping tribes, who made war over the distant plains. You remember their auburn hide, their greenish hair; their crooked legs, that leap so swiftly into battle.

"...you offer amnesty," you whisper. "A claim to what is mine, by the laws of your people... for a price."
"The price is simple and time-honored," says the taxman. "Men, or money. Soldiers, or gold. Your choice."

A) Men.
B) Money.
C) I'll give nothing to you.

656
"Let Orrom find fish in the sea," you say. "You will hold this festival in my name!"
The woman with topknot and ruffled collar stalks off, furious.

Quote

The festival is a spectacular success!

Orrom was never very popular, you learn, except with a few zealous clergy... the Baron held lavish feasts in Orrom's name, much to the distaste of your people. They are only too happy to dedicate the feast to their GLORIOUS LIBERATOR!

You wander the celebration, snacking on sundry smoked seafood. All is well.

1250 AD, Winter

Horns and horse-whinnies sound outside your city. A voice calls out, requesting entry in the name of the king.
"It's the imperial taxmen", whispers your secretary. "They come for their annual dues."

Taxmen? You weren't told about this!

A) !!BURN the goldmongers!!
B) Deny them entry, and set the guards on them if pressed!
C) Let them in, but keep your existence a secret. For all they know, the Baron yet lives.
D) Let them in, and greet them yourself.

Eesh, the little monkeys are really sweating down there... you tell them to take it easy for awhile. Maybe they'll finish the tunnel at some point; maybe you'll just use the hole to stow your HOARD or something.

The weeks slip by, colored by the hubbub of summer fishing: you lounge on your dais, adjudicating the occasional petty dispute. Every now and again, a couple men wander in to strike away at the bedrock.

1250 AD, Fall

As the summer fish slip away to deeper haunts, New Codhollow sets up for a grand fish-smoking festival! Things go smoothly enough, until an argument starts up among some of your people... two of them walk in, shooting glares at each other.

"Ma'am ZENDRAKIEL, the smoke festival's usually thrown in honor of Orrom Fish-god... me and the lads figure we should throw it for you instead!"
"My lady, this is outrageous! This day is a sacred occasion, and Orrom smiles upon our dedication!"

Huh.

A) Honor me!
B) Honor Orrom!
C) Can't you dedicate this thing to both of us?
