The surprise breakthrough along the coast brought the Sordlanders within striking range of the capital.  The home command scrambled defensive militias to erect hasty fortifications.

Foreman Giles sighed.  While the reports and incredible stories of the defense of the southland would inspire children for generations to come, the damage to the countryside in the west could not be ignored.  He knew it'd only get worse, what with the new generation of shells already being shipped to the front lines.  He had left it to the generals; take it back now if they could, with the understanding that any digging in that the Sordlanders did could be destroyed from the sky.  Inwardly, he knew that each shot fired in the province would be that much more damage... but war is hell, as they say.

He sighed and prepared for what seemed like his thousandth press conference of the week.

The Union general, smoking his pipe, stewed in the camp chair in the command tent.  Not one of the fronts was going right.  The Hibernians inexplicably turned on the protection force and captured thousands of troops.  The Sordland advance was a slow endless grind.  Then the Vlosavi launched a suicidal strike into core Union territory... and succeeded?  Nothing was going as planned.

Sighing, he stood up and signaled the adjutant.  The original strategy was no longer going to succeed; they had to dig in a bit and take advantage of what opportunities they did have.

"Lieutenant, how do you like the beaches of Vlosavi?"

The Union general frowned at the map.  While the Sordland's aggression was only into newly reunified land and not into the long-standing territory, it still represented an unfortunate loss.  The hastily erected fortifications were no match for the heavy Sordland artillery barrage.  Their advantage may be their downfall, however; the fortifications had been reduced well below usability, and would offer no protection for the invaders if they struck back now.

An adjutant came in and passed the general a sealed envelope.  The general nodded and opened it.  There were detailed notes, figures, and sketches, but the central message was loud and clear.

The bombers were ready.

The Hibernian Protection Force moved forward, securing more of the eastern section of the country, including the capital region.  Strict orders were given to treat all citizens with full respect; any soldier caught stealing or damaging property was jailed on the spot.

Foreman Giles stepped up to the podium.  All eyes were focused on him as he ascended.  With the trumpets of war sounding in the west, how would the Union respond?  He began to speak, addressing the crowd.

"As you are all aware, the Republic of Sordland has launched an attack on the Hibernian Commonwealth.  We cannot stand by and watch their aggression proceed unchecked.  As such, we have sent our battalions to secure our western borders as a check to their growth.  We will establish this protectorate to ensure the safety of our close brothers and ensure Sordland troops are not massing at our borders."

There was already a growing buzz in the plaza, but he continued.

"In addition, with the obvious difficulty the Hibernians are having defending their lands, we have reached a deal with local governors to provide defensive support to Hibernian lands.  There is no need for armed conflict or for Union soldiers to fall, but we will not stand by idly either to watch the continent be consumed in chaos.  All people should be free to work and support their families, free from the interference of corporate overlords or warmongers!"

The usual bylines were met with the expected applause, but what did this mean for the future of the Union?  Time would tell.
