DF General Discussion / Re: The NEW Future of the Fortress
« on: October 20, 2008, 05:22:20 pm »
Bagpipes were originally made for sheepherding by signaling the dogs andd other Sheephards etc. The usage as actuall instrument is an much newer invention so the timeframe of DF wouldnt allow (except toady says otherwise) bagpipes as Musicinstrument.

Anyway the new skill system looks awesome and makes custom races now more different from the preexisting ones i hope. So Yay for the Toad and an donation if hes done till chrismas (the only time i have money XD).

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Hardest way to play Dwarf Fortress

Use "Embarkanywhere" for an 1x1 location. this should allow creatures (Undead) to respawn asap.

Ah damnit i must have overread that Bloats. On 1: Yes why not i see them somehow as "coat of arms" heck my familys coat of arms isnt that much better.

edit: oops it is bloat number two no wonder that i did forgot it after 400 bloats.

First i want to quote this article (http://www.dwarffortresswiki.net/index.php/Stud) from the DF wiki:

Quote
[...] The type of decoration does not affect the value it adds to the item. Spikes are more common decorations. Bands are less common decorations. Rarely, a picture of something will be engraved into the item, similar to engraving a natural wall or floor.

My suggestions are now:

(1) The chance that race and culture specific symbols occur (dwarves,  Lobsters, wavelines [...]) should be a bit higher or depend on the skill of the decorator.

(2) that the pictures that can occur on an item can be improved and extended by following acts of decoration for example by adding details to it.

An "dwarv surrounded by dwarves in dog leather" could for example get by an Gemsetter eyes of made from sapphire. Which should read like this " sapphire eyed dwarv surrounded by [...]"

An studding could add an belt to this dwarf with the dwarves name on it (the name should have to be tracket) to our dwarf. Example "Olon Ironblood with Saphireeyes and an Belt from Silver showing his name is surrounded by Dwarves" etc.

Normal decoration could have improvements too. This would look like this: "[Generic Item] Studed with Gold. The studding is hold by silver nites. The studing is encrusted with 3 Moss agates."

(3) that Normal engravings can be decorated too. Example: "On the wall is an picture of the Sun surrounded by stars. The sun is illuminated with Gold. the Stars are encrusted with diamonds"

The "layers" of decoration should maybe limited. There is no actual "practical reason" behind this suggestions. Its only for deepness of the game and awesome pictures for the minds eye.

Decorations like this were made in history. Palaces in india had for example theyr walls encrusted with gems. In europe mainly pictures of Saints and Gods etc were encrusted or illuminated with metals (holy auras from Gold etc.).

So now feel free to discuss and add your opinions.

edit: (4) An option to take away studdings, encrustings and alike would be neat to recover Metals or Gems. I hate to see Rubys and so on on Elven animal cages.

Well Pilsu i would go for an organic design (Its my taste and i dont play dwarfes actually). Means that the furniture should somehow resemble the/an plant. For this i would use green gems or Green metals (i use Green gold) as leaves (with real gold or silver for details) and red, yellow, light blue and white crystals for blossoms.

Hey that brings me an idea.

Marlowe: Get your axe and let it stud with silver and Gold after that you bring it to the "Gemsetter" (With the Gemsetter job not the Cutter job) and let this guy encrust the axe with 12 diamons.

That would be an very interesting design but with the disadvantage of working cyclical.

For an more steady stream you would need at least two pump-tunnels.

Philosophical: Yes if we discuss the this event.
Nerdy: Only when where was an Medium for sonic transportation.
Dwarven: Which forest?
Elven: It was a deaf dwarf lets kill him.

Moss  Agate/ opals look nice in wood.

Seriously, what use are jewels? Or, more accurately, what's the use of a jeweler? I'm really starting to wonder.

[...]

Well Df is not just an game its an "Fantasy world simulator" (didnt toady state that somewhere?) so it trys to simulate an realistic "world".

In the old days Gems were mined cause they looked nice, the people belived in theyr powers (Amethyst against getting drunken, Topaz for clearing the Mind etc.), Statussymbols, and even as currency.

To top that its extraordinary dwarfen to have an steelaxe with gold an silver inlays plus 12 Diamonds on the blade.

Many Gems had over the time many actual use like Corunds (Rubys/Saphires) in high precision mechanics. "Mary glass" for Realworld Gemwindows. Some Gems, cause of double friction etc. were used in Optics. Diamonds in "Granite saws".

The only thing i dont like on the Gemsetter is that he cant break an gem from the item the gem is on for example from that damnit Larch-cages my Elves are bringing. I mean seriously Rubys on an "Larch cage"?

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Water flow?
« on: October 10, 2008, 03:45:31 am »
An aquifer on your bottom-level could prevent the pressurisation too.
Is the U-bend bug still unsolved?

If its unsolved you could flood your entire fortress if you are not cautious.

Chicken are you crazy :o ?  This are invincible Monster that try to zerg your hero if you hit one time to often ... What? DF and not "Zelda"?

Ok seriously i like to see That stuff especally if it would be for humans.
Feathers could be used as decorations, pillows and whatever they are usefull for.

DF General Discussion / Re: Embark Anywhere
« on: October 05, 2008, 01:03:31 pm »
As far as i know from one or two (provoked) Crashes of DF is that the area in which you embark gets "created/generated", then (if you save) shoved in an file and at last DF marks the area on the mainmap as not embarkable.

If you use "Embark anywhere", DF gets asured that the certain area is embarkable. This means that an new fortressfile is created with an blank area if you hit embark.

So to be true that the fortress is undone isnt the failure of "Embark Anywhere". It is the "Failure" of DF which does safe the fortresses separately from the main map which is totally reasonable to me cause it does save very much discspace.

Maybe it is possible to rewrite embark anywhere so an Previous Fortress would be counted like an regular settlement of the Race which did build it. This way you would get your old fortress maybe.

DF General Discussion / Re: So, seriously, Toady, where did you go!
« on: October 03, 2008, 09:53:11 pm »

I have a solution, take this girl I know (who lives in Silverdale) out to dinner and perhaps you will be rewarded with some 'stress relieving activity!'  She really is very friendly and even has a masters degree! ;)

Nooo! Girls kill productivity! Forced celibacy without distractions for Toady.

Ahahaha...but it will happen one day that Toady will find the "perfect girl" [if theres a girl like that at all  ;D ], and DF's development will slow down after that point I guess.  :D

Well i say myabe the development speed would double cause she could be an programmer or something in this direction.

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Determining Wind Pre-Embark

It would be cool if Smoke and Miasma would float in the direction of the wind. Wasnt there an Windmap on Legends mode?

I tried that various Times in some lakes. It works when they freeze. You just have to be fast enought in wall construction.

DF Suggestions / Re: Weapons blocking/parrying other weapons - thoughts?
« on: September 30, 2008, 06:52:58 pm »
I could dig up some stuff about and from "Liechtenauer", "Talhoffer", "Hans von Speyer" etc. out of my Library and from the Web (*) but this stuff would be in German or if i find Pics/Files of the originals in old German Dialekts. I could try to translate the essential thought if there are no actual translations.

(*) Applying German Copyright-laws most of it must be free cause of its creation date. I will check it before i post/link anything.
