DF General Discussion / Re: Post your weird moments in exploring DF 2012!
« on: February 15, 2012, 10:28:10 pm »
I was foolish enough to settle next to a volcano which was in near neighborhood to 2 towers (btw. they appeared in the neighbors tab on the embark-screen). I thought i would have a couple of years before ambushes start so i just had some peasents guarding the entrance while the rest of my dorfs was churning out free ceramics.

To make the story short, some elven traders appear and i was ordering everyone to haul stuff to the outside as 2 necromancers start to siege me! Not only that but each of them had around 30 undead buddies consisting out of ex- elves, humans, dwarfs and goblins. Naturally i got my ass handed to me and no i dont mean my pet donkey.

This was the second speed death today, well third if the reclaim that crashed counts. The first one was from Mutant mist ... got my geese which turned out to be deadlier and more frightening when a Uwe Boll film. The normal zombie Ravens were already bad enough but this was just overkill. 5 birds insta-kill 7 Dorfs in less when 2 minutes.

Also i think magma got a bit faster. I did see one of my miners vaporize almost instantly. He was reportet missing which in retrospect was kind of cool.

Do you mean turning someone into a frog, then having them change back when kissed?

I... I think that's actually possible.  You would need to make the "kiss" available to be performed somehow, but it seems wholly doable.  The "turn people to frogs" could be given to some creature and... hmm...

I'm not certain but it seems like something within the bounds of the interaction system as described currently.  I'll have to add it to my !!SCIENCE!! list to check in the upcoming release...

Actually i was thinking about making a material (powder) that does the transformation to spike some food with it and leave that out for children hehehe.

I am sure the basic transformation would work but i wonder if it is possible to have a interaction that turns off the effects of a specific other interaction. I guess you could go with the basic were-animal transformation and leave the timing stuff out to get a (supposed to be) permanent solution.

Hehe it could be, thought, a Gamebreaker if you just turn your pals into mice to carry around or into [mount]s. Worse yet, turn gobbos into sheep and sell them to the next village XD .

You could make a "kiss" interaction that does a syndrome that "un-transforms" a transformed creature.

You would need a mouth and lips (sorta)

Heh and it would need to be a obtainable secret which is written into a tome/book along with a couple of other spells and mixtures. To bad if "some pages regarding secret xyz are missing " is part of the books description, well if we ever get to that point. I am faithful though.

Hey it just dawned on me that we could now create single use transformations  :o This would mean wecan have now a stable trope from grims Fairytails: transformed princess XD

Is it possiblke to link a generic creature definition to a interaction to transform someone? Secondly is it possible to create a second interaction that would transform a thing/person back?

DF General Discussion / Re: DF as a tool for education
« on: January 31, 2012, 06:58:35 pm »
Combat-log can be educational for medicine students and as for pets .. DF just teaches us to spay and neuter  our beloved furballs or they propagate like tribles.

The wars can be also educational if elves fight against Humans or dwarfs as it shows how a advantage in numbers fares against a advantage in technology, just like when the spains conquered all theyr soon to be middle and south american colonies.

This is a good a time as any:
A Spear Dwarf has become attached to a +iron dagger+!

He menaces with spikes of iron!

On the Dagger is picture of a dorf and a dagger in Goblinbone. The dagger is stabbed into the dorf it relates to the stabbing of Urist McSpeardorf with a +iron dagger+.

English is a mandatory thing in German schools only the higher echelons need a 3rd language.

Btw. Dwarfes are a part of the Indo-german mytholgy thus they are at home in Europe as whole not just single countries.

Following that line of thought, is a mosqito a vampire?

Clearly, DF needs to uncover what happens when a mosquito contracts vamprism. And Lycanthropy. ...

Sea lampreys, nightwings, leechmen, and some procedural creatures currently have blood sucking attacks. Do those respect blood ingestion syndromes?

Toady had an aswer for that:

Toady after reading the latest devlog entry i was wondering if only the blood of intelligent creatures work or if you could suck out a bunny or a boar. Secondly i wonder what would happen if you suck the blood of a creature that has an interaction linked to its blood?

Why do they have to be unconscious? I mean if you're fighting someone one-on-one, seems likely that you'd be able to grapple them and then bite into them.

You'd be able to drain an unconscious animal, if you want to strangle one or something.  Any ingestion syndrome from the blood would be triggered.

As far as i understand it that counts for all bloodsucking attacks thus leeches, Nightwings etc. will be poisoned if they can be affected by the poison.

Thats rather nice for swamps but alas i think volcanos and the magma-layer should be a bit more dangerous in general.

I hope at some point the Ai will recognize and use the effects of good and bad regions. Say a using a good region to heal war-crippled soldiers while enemies are driven into the more deadly places.

Oh just a thought: is it possible to generate mists over/on special map-tiles? (Sulphur)gasses and compounds on Volcanos and Swamps would be a nice touch ... hehe including self-igniting stuff.

Yeah but there are no "fricking lasers on theyr fricking forheads".

I think the dcission to include all Animals left on the sponsorship list was atleast disputable. I for nce would have taken them out of this update and would have made a dedicated update just for them instead of cramming in theyr special tokens etc. later.

Even if SOPA/PIPA/ACTA arent that "bad" on the first glance what do you think will happen in 1, 5 or 10 years? Generally its that ones such laws are passed they open a passage for argument. We in Germany had a similiar discussion on "Banning" sides with Childporn and Terrorism and it was said that only those sides there to be blocked. Anyway pretty soon other interest groups sprung on the wagon, our RIA/MPAA like organisations demanded that for copyright infringement there should be bans and then come along people that wanted blocks for other stuff etc. etc. Thankfully the protests here axed this law for the time being.

So imagine these things are passed? What then? Are you thinking politicians are ever going to revoke those laws? Hell no, that would make look them weak and giving into the demands of "Pirates", "Thiefs", "Rapers", "Terrorists". Instead they go on extending this bull, taking money from interrest groups and what not that want more and more control over content. Why? Because it shows muscle, actionism. How many parts of the population would be for revoking penalties on drug use and ownership? How many part would be for harsher penalties? Joe average is happy when a Weed-junkie is prison while he can keep drinking his 6t can of beer because he feels "safer" now while he searches for the keys of the car.

And while we are at why not just ban some webpages that are not conforming with the Government/regime? Do you realy think everyone in any Government is good enough to do not just that? SOPA and co are a very handy excuse.

edit:

Oh and Laying of SOPA does not mean it is never to come back. This a test-balloon tactic. You propose a very harsh law and you get opposed or not. If not you are lucky, if you are, you are not in any trouble at all. Just wait a couple of weeks the population will be feed up on hearing all that is perciefed as "whining". If there are still problems and resistance you can water the Law down and then down again as often as you like. Moist laws are tailored in a way that most of is just extra-miles after the real goal. And heck you can still count on some Nutjob wanting to profilate him/herself as "strong" and "acting" in the eye of the voter.

edit 2: i am sorry for ranting this much.
