I've run into a bit of trouble when trying to disarm prisoners. I've followed the wiki guide - have caged goblins, have a garbage dump, but if I mass-designate the cages to be dumped and then deselect dumping on the cages (as described on the wiki) nothing happens at all.

I also tried building the cages before designating the dumping, but that's not working either.

My animal stockpile is outside, but I definitely have gather refuse from outside turned on.

Any help would be appreciated!

I'm a bit confused over my butchers at the moment. I've brought along a couple of turkeys to provide poults for meat, leather, bones etc. However, when my butchers slaughter a poult, I usually only get a skull. Occasionally I'll get the meat, fat, skin etc. as well, but it seems to happen perhaps 1 in 5 times.

Why is this?

I've been away from DF for a few releases, and started up a new fortress in 0.34.11. Much to my surprise, I found dolomite to be available in the list of gems to cut. Why is this? Is it simply a problem with the material properties?

hi all, I'm just getting back into DF after not having played for a while, and I noticed that on the embark screen, there are fewer options you can choose when finding a suitable location. I take it this has something to do with what I have heard mentioned about magma always being available - is this correct? If so, exactly what changes have been made to the world gen in this regard?

Oh wow, I wasn't aware of the 6 square thing (although I still don't know why I told you to build walls on the edge tile, I DID know that's not possible). I''l keep that in mind for future construction :P

You're right - the water will flow off the edge of the map. My first thought would be to build some pumps that pump water up to the z-level above the river, and have some walls which guide it off the map:

If the O--O is a wall, = is the river, . the ground and % a pump. So the pic on the left is your situation at the moment (with the dots being the sections you can't channel) and the right pic after you've installed pumps. This will pump the water off the map, without it swamping your fortress :)

Well there you go - I had only ever used gears in this capacity, so I assumed the other way around - that this behaviour applied to doors and everything else. Off in my own world apparently! Good to find this out before I stuff up a fortress :P

At the risk of sounding incredibly stupid, what construction gives you the pointy bits on the top of your towers? Is it just a ramp that looks like that because it has no adjacent wall or something? Cheers,
