DF Gameplay Questions / Disarming caged prisoners?

I've run into a bit of trouble when trying to disarm prisoners. I've followed the wiki guide - have caged goblins, have a garbage dump, but if I mass-designate the cages to be dumped and then deselect dumping on the cages (as described on the wiki) nothing happens at all.

I also tried building the cages before designating the dumping, but that's not working either.

My animal stockpile is outside, but I definitely have gather refuse from outside turned on.

Any help would be appreciated!

DF Gameplay Questions / Not getting correct items from butcher?

I'm a bit confused over my butchers at the moment. I've brought along a couple of turkeys to provide poults for meat, leather, bones etc. However, when my butchers slaughter a poult, I usually only get a skull. Occasionally I'll get the meat, fat, skin etc. as well, but it seems to happen perhaps 1 in 5 times.

Why is this?

I've been away from DF for a few releases, and started up a new fortress in 0.34.11. Much to my surprise, I found dolomite to be available in the list of gems to cut. Why is this? Is it simply a problem with the material properties?

DF Gameplay Questions / Finding A Suitable Embark Location

hi all, I'm just getting back into DF after not having played for a while, and I noticed that on the embark screen, there are fewer options you can choose when finding a suitable location. I take it this has something to do with what I have heard mentioned about magma always being available - is this correct? If so, exactly what changes have been made to the world gen in this regard?

DF Gameplay Questions / Dwarf REALLY likes vermin...

I've been catching the vermin in my fortress because the fire snakes kept destroying my masterwork wooden bins, but once they were placed in the animal stockpile they would go missing after a while. From the stocks screen, I tracked them down - all 10 live olms and 7 live fire snakes - to one of my wrestler's backpacks. Does this mean my dwarf has some kind of phallic obsession, or does he just find vermin incredibly appetising?

DF Gameplay Questions / Economy leads to roomless dwarves...

Apologies if this has been answered already, but my economy has kicked in and suddenly a whole bunch of my dwarves, who all had rooms previously, are sleeping in the barracks. The spare bedrooms are all set to be rented out and the dwarves appear to have enough money (although some only have about twice the amount that is required for room rental), does anyone know why they won't sleep in a proper room? Thanks in advance

DF Gameplay Questions / Clarifying Justice

I did a search for this, but just want to clarify something. On the justice screen, do the crimes remain even after the sentence is served? i.e. does it keep a permanent record of all the crimes that have been committed in your fortress? It's just that I've got a couple of crimes listed, and at least one sentence was given (and I think served) but the crimes are still there.

DF Gameplay Questions / One Dwarf Won't Train at Archery Range

Hi all, I've got my marksdwarves training at the archery range - well, all except one. Does anyone have any idea why this is? I have like 14 dwarves that have all trained, and are all marksdwarves, and then one recruit who just refuses to train at the archery range. He's off duty and all that, but he stands around doing nothing. Any ideas? Cheers

In my 2nd year of my fortress, I had a dwarf make a legendary stone item. I never realised how good a legendary stonecrafter is - they chew through stone like nobody's business! Saves me dumping it all  :)

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / *Sigh*

I just started a new fortress, and as I was stocking up on my items to take, I wondered why I could take so many more supplies than normal. As soon as I pressed 'e' to embark, I remembered I hadn't given my dwarves any skills, but it's turned out to be an awesome starting position. Anyone else done anything stupid like that?

DF Gameplay Questions / Traps and Training (2 Q's)

Just a couple of quick questions, hopefully they haven't been asked before (I searched but couldn't find them):

1. Is it just me, or does it take FOREVER for mechanics to do their jobs? I'm trying to link up levers to traps etc., but it takes a very long time for even an adept mechanic to do anything. They take so long that they're always needing to go off and eat, sleep and drink. Do other people find this?

2. Is there any reason why my dwarf won't train up with his crossbow? I've got 4 archery ranges designated, and he's off duty, and I have bone bolts sitting in an ammo bin, but he won't train. He doesn't even have dabbling marksdwarf skill. Any ideas?

DF Gameplay Questions / Not Stockpiling Wood

Hopefully a quick question, I have a free wood stockpile in my fortress, but none of my dwarves will collect the wood from felled trees and bring it inside. I have checked and rechecked my stockpile settings but no go. Can anyone please tell me why they might be leaving it outside? Cheers

DF Gameplay Questions / Equipped items on stocks screen

Hey everyone! I did a quick search on the forums, am I right in thinking that there is currently no way to tell which items are currently equipped by dwarves on the stocks screen? I want to melt all unused items, but I'm not sure if I melt some axes and things if I will be melting those belonging to my woodcutters, for example.

DF Gameplay Questions / Rocks Not Dumped Properly

I've got my Dwarves to dump excess stone off a cliff, but there's a whole trail of stone marked for dumping but has been left on the way to the cliff, i.e. hasn't been dumped properly. I think it happens when the dwarves go to get a drink or eat or whatnot while they're in the middle of dumping the stone but they just drop it and never come back to pick it up. Remarking it for dumping doesn't seem to make them do it, anyone got any ideas? Cheers

DF Gameplay Questions / No Floor Space at Archery Range?

I've just come across a problem I've never seen before - my shoot at archery range jobs are being cancelled, apparently because there is "no floor space available". I've got three ranges identical to one another:

(= is wall, X target and . floor)
But this only seems to affect the top range - both of the others are being used. Any idea why this is happening?
