DF Gameplay Questions / Re: One Dwarf Won't Train at Archery Range
« on: September 04, 2008, 08:55:02 pm »
Hey all, thanks for the replies! Yeah all the above stuff was checked (I learned all those lessons the hard way a while ago :P) but I was since under siege and after that I have all marksdwarves - I don't know if the lazy one died or improved his skill when he was defending the fortress (I never made a note of his name)... Consequently I can't go back and try and figure out what was wrong anymore, but thanks anyway!

DF Gameplay Questions / One Dwarf Won't Train at Archery Range
« on: September 04, 2008, 05:59:08 am »
Hi all, I've got my marksdwarves training at the archery range - well, all except one. Does anyone have any idea why this is? I have like 14 dwarves that have all trained, and are all marksdwarves, and then one recruit who just refuses to train at the archery range. He's off duty and all that, but he stands around doing nothing. Any ideas? Cheers

In my 2nd year of my fortress, I had a dwarf make a legendary stone item. I never realised how good a legendary stonecrafter is - they chew through stone like nobody's business! Saves me dumping it all  :)

I just started a new fortress, and as I was stocking up on my items to take, I wondered why I could take so many more supplies than normal. As soon as I pressed 'e' to embark, I remembered I hadn't given my dwarves any skills, but it's turned out to be an awesome starting position. Anyone else done anything stupid like that?

Yeah, I've got some lying around. I'll make sure I extend the archery range.

Hey Eruonen, yes to those three questions. I'm wondering if Bogdanov is right about having too small ranges, but unfortunately I just got drilled with a goblin siege (about 90 dwarves killed   ). On the mechanics thing, I meant that it takes ages for the mechanic to 'install' the mechanism...

DF Gameplay Questions / Traps and Training (2 Q's)

Just a couple of quick questions, hopefully they haven't been asked before (I searched but couldn't find them):

1. Is it just me, or does it take FOREVER for mechanics to do their jobs? I'm trying to link up levers to traps etc., but it takes a very long time for even an adept mechanic to do anything. They take so long that they're always needing to go off and eat, sleep and drink. Do other people find this?

2. Is there any reason why my dwarf won't train up with his crossbow? I've got 4 archery ranges designated, and he's off duty, and I have bone bolts sitting in an ammo bin, but he won't train. He doesn't even have dabbling marksdwarf skill. Any ideas?

Cheers   :)

Never mind - I found the gather wood option just after I posted that   :)

DF Gameplay Questions / Not Stockpiling Wood
« on: January 27, 2008, 08:07:00 am »
Hopefully a quick question, I have a free wood stockpile in my fortress, but none of my dwarves will collect the wood from felled trees and bring it inside. I have checked and rechecked my stockpile settings but no go. Can anyone please tell me why they might be leaving it outside? Cheers

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: Using Bins Effectively.. or at all
« on: January 27, 2008, 08:13:00 am »
The reason why they won't put the goods from your filled stockpiles into bins is because the bins need to be on the relevant stockpile for it to be filled with goods (i.e. a bin won't be filled with food until it's on a food stockpile) If your stockpiles are already full with food, say, then there is no room for a bin to be put on the stockpile and therefore it won't be filled with the food. It can be frustrating, and the only way I know to get around it is to create another temporary stockpile somewhere into which the bins will hopefully be put, and filled up, and then you get rid of these temp. stockpiles. That way, the bins will be filled and moved back to the stockpiles where you want them. Hope that makes sense!

This will be a lot easier when Toady introduces his 'burrows' idea...

I used to dump everything, but got sick of it... I've been lucky in my last few fortresses to get a legendary stonecrafter early on, so I can:
1. Get rid of my stone incredibly quickly, and
2. Have lots of stuff to trade.
Even without a legendary crafter, just having 3 or 4 workshops pumping out stone crafts and toys etc. can chew through a fair bit of that rock. It also frees up a lot of dwarves for other (IMO) more important hauling jobs. I'm sure you realise this already, but when building stuff the dwarves will move any rocks out of the way (as long as they aren't forbidden) and barrels can be stored in the same square as a boulder in a stockpile, so although the food might not show up on your screen (the boulder is often on top) the food is actually there. Note that this only works if you have barrels...

DF Gameplay Questions / Re: marksdwarves ignoring orders
« on: May 01, 2008, 07:40:00 am »
I find it best (although it takes a lot more micromanagement, but a little bit more in this game's not gonna be noticed right?) to have my marksdwarves all in their own squad - i.e., if I have 5 marksdwarves, I have 5 squads. This way, if one needs to go off and sleep, I still have all the other four dwarves at their station and active. I got sick of my dwarves all going and hanging out in their squad leaders bedroom for hours at a time...
