Savegames now include a copy of the raws, I *THINK* you can modify those and have the changes in your savegame and not have to regen

Pedantics assemble!
Actually, the difference between a hack and a mod is as follows, a mod changes the available game files to produce a desired effect. The game would still operate within the standard rules, you just changed the rules a bit.
Whereas hacking involves changing stuff the game generally WONT let you do within the framework of the rules, and is usually slightly more advanced.. Say for instance using a memory editing tool to turn a piece of stone into fertile soil or magma or what have you.

TL;DR
Modding modifies the rules, hacking hacks them to pieces with an *Adamantium War Axe*

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Re: Anyone got military equipment to work?
« on: April 03, 2010, 04:07:13 pm »
huh.. ya know.. when i look at it again i think i may have misunderstood the feedback given by my little dwarves.. as my alert states were progressive in nature my dwarves did not equip their new gear until i actually set it to that state but.. uhh at least at this time i seem unable to set different uniform to different alert states... weird.. i could have SWORN, and i will! DAMN! that it worked like that earlyer... ohwell..

I've not only gotten my dwarves to pick up their stuff, but they pick up stuff depending on their alert state.. I've set it up like this

Copper - Stand down: Dwarves do their regular stuff, carry shortswords.
Silver - Training: Dwarves switch to breastplates, shields and training weapons
Platinum - Peacetime defense: Breastplates, helmets shields shortswords, patrol entrance hall, 5 and 5 members of the main squad alternate months to patrol
Gold - Wartime, civvies are ordered below, ALL soldiers are forced on duty and march to the entrance hall, full platemail, sword, shield, carry water and food.

The only problem i have is that while they're training they're still listed as civilians.. doesn't really seem to change alot, as soon as i set them higher than silver they switch to soldier mode and march out

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Prep for surgery! stat!
« on: April 03, 2010, 01:40:40 pm »
Has anyone actually gotten their surgeons to actually do anything outside washing the patients? i've had one dwarf bedridden for almost a year now with a doctor looming above him, using the surgery skill.. but nothing appears to be happening.

DF Dwarf Mode Discussion / Dwarves, the ultimate badasses
« on: April 03, 2010, 11:41:45 am »
I have a miner, her name is goldie, on account of her gold-colored eyes and frizzy golden hair... She's a legendary miner, and as will soon be discovered, legendary badass..

I got a bit careless with my strip mining the surface for usable materials, and subsequently, dear goldie got trapped in a small cave-in. She lay on the ground, with two broken legs, a broken right wrist, two broken ribs, and a pierced lung.

A young dwarf rushed out to haul her back to the hospital for diagnosis, but before he got there, she had simply gotten up, swapped her pick to her left hand, and continued mining. The young peasant was not discouraged by this and actually DRAGGED her back to the hospital, where Ol' Doc had a look at her.. yep.. compound overlapping fracture of the right arm was going to need setting and immobilization.. the legs were pretty bad too, and the broken rib would require surgery

But goldie would have none of it, she simply got up and left, leaving the doctor dumbfounded.

*Ol' Doc* cancels set bone: patient not resting

i usually prefer to build into the side of a mountain, 2d style, and then carve my fortifications out of that, with a curtain wall and sniper towers only enterable from inside the fort added later.

Outside that my forts seem to mostly be fairly OCD'y trying to build rooms for the dwarves that maximise floorspace and exactly match up with other passages mined earlyer, and perfectly placed workshops and storage piles. Lately tho, after stonesense i've been building what looks good instead, focusing mostly on the entrance hall and such, my latest one has a three story grand hall with engraved pillars/staircases.

The reclaim option can sometimes have... strange results
for instance, i found a really nice site, but lost all of my dwarves within the first five minutes due to a very forested area combined with fire imps

i decided to reclaim instead of regenning the world to get my awesome site.. and lo and behold.. eighty battle hardened dwarves set out to reclaim my wagon. the baron and consort followed soon after O_o

i once had a completely consciptory army, every single dwarf in my fort had hunting enabled so they had leather armor and weapons, most of them had at least some wrestling training. So whenever something attacked my fort i drafted a few of the small squads and sent them out into the field... it.. didn't work very well..

on the plus side the survivors were all getting used to death very quickly

I had a fort where i went for a zombie survial theme.. immediately upon embarking i realize that im completely surrounded by zombie woodland creatures.. unit list said i had six pages of zombie marmots, and even more zombie fish. my dwarves had to get drafted in shifts to they could stave off the zombie horde that eternally shuffeled towards my little camp.

and then came the zombie gcs...

Only murky pools will accumulate water, you're better off punching a few holes in the bottom of the murky pool and letting the excess water drain into a cistern below
